Quick answer

Pico toning uses a picosecond laser at low energy across the whole face to break excess pigment into tiny particles the body can clear. It gradually fades melasma, freckles, sun spots and dullness with little or no downtime. Sessions take 15–20 minutes, and most people need 5–10 sessions one to two weeks apart, though many visitors notice brighter skin after one. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong in Seoul, pico toning starts from ₩69,000 per full-face session, with 5 sessions for ₩299,000 (KRW, excluding 10% VAT).

What is pico toning?

Pico toning is a laser treatment that uses a picosecond laser, a device that fires extremely short pulses measured in trillionths of a second. Used at low energy and passed evenly over the whole face, these pulses create a pressure effect that shatters pigment into very fine particles. The body's immune cells then clear those particles gradually over the following weeks.

Because the pulses are so short, less heat spreads into the surrounding skin than with older nanosecond lasers. That is one reason pico toning has become popular in Korea for pigment-prone skin, which can react to heat with more pigmentation. See our pico toning treatment page.

The word "toning" refers to the technique: rather than blasting individual spots at high energy, the doctor makes several gentle, even passes across the face. The aim is to reduce excess pigment step by step while keeping the skin calm, which is why a series of sessions is usually needed. Targeted spot treatment, by contrast, uses higher energy on one lesion and often leaves a small scab for a week.

What pigmentation can pico toning help?

  • Melasma. Hormone- and sun-related patches on the cheeks, forehead and upper lip. Pico toning can lighten melasma gradually, but it is a chronic condition and needs maintenance and sun protection. See melasma treatments.
  • Freckles. Small brown spots that darken in summer often fade well. See freckles.
  • Sun spots. Flat brown age or sun spots may lighten, though very distinct spots sometimes respond better to a targeted spot treatment.
  • Post-acne brown marks. Pigmentation left after breakouts often fades over a course.
  • Dull, uneven tone. Many people notice brighter, clearer skin even without specific spots. See uneven skin tone.

Not all dark marks are the same. Our guide to pigmentation types explains why the diagnosis matters.

Benefits of pico toning

  • Little or no downtime. Most people have mild redness for a few hours and can wear makeup the same day or next morning.
  • Gentle on pigment-prone skin. Low energy and short pulses reduce the heat that can trigger rebound pigmentation.
  • Whole-face brightening. It treats overall tone, not only individual spots.
  • Quick sessions. About 15–20 minutes, easy to fit into a sightseeing day.
  • Combines well. Often paired with soothing ultrasound, skin boosters or fractional treatments for texture.

Who is a good candidate for pico toning?

Usually a good fit

  • Melasma, freckles or scattered sun spots
  • Dull or uneven tone
  • Brown post-acne marks
  • People who want results without visible downtime

Talk to the doctor first

  • A fresh tan or recent heavy sun exposure
  • Active skin infection, cold sores or open wounds
  • Use of photosensitizing medication or recent isotretinoin
  • Pregnancy, or a new or changing mole that needs checking

Any spot that is changing, bleeding or irregular should be checked by a doctor before laser treatment. See can I get laser with a tan.

What happens on treatment day

  1. English consultation. A licensed doctor examines your pigment, often under magnification, to identify the type and depth, then agrees a plan and price.
  2. Cleansing. Makeup and sunscreen are removed.
  3. Eye protection. You wear protective goggles or eye shields.
  4. Laser passes. The doctor passes the handpiece evenly over the face. It feels like light snapping or warm prickling; numbing is not usually needed.
  5. Soothing and sunscreen. A calming mask or soothing care is applied, followed by sunscreen before you leave.

How many pico toning sessions do you need?

Concern Typical number of sessions What to expect
Dullness and uneven tone 1–5 Brighter skin often visible after the first session
Freckles and post-acne marks 3–6 Gradual fading over the course
Sun spots 3–6, sometimes with spot treatment Distinct spots may need extra targeted treatment
Melasma 5–10, then maintenance Slow improvement; sun protection is essential

Sessions are usually spaced one to two weeks apart. On a short trip, many visitors have one or two sessions in Seoul and continue at home. Read how many pico toning sessions you need.

Pico toning results timeline

Pico toning works gradually. Each session breaks down a little more pigment, and the body clears it over the following weeks. A typical pattern looks like this:

  • Same day: skin may look slightly pink, then brighter and clearer by the evening.
  • First few days: some darker spots can look a shade deeper or show fine flaking before they lighten. This is normal.
  • After 2–3 sessions: overall tone often looks more even, and freckles start to fade.
  • After a full course: the most noticeable change, especially for melasma and stubborn pigment.
  • Maintenance: pigment, particularly melasma, can return with sun exposure or hormonal changes, so many people have occasional maintenance sessions.

Taking photos in the same light before your first session and after each few sessions helps you track progress, because gradual change is hard to notice day to day. See pico toning results.

Aftercare between sessions

  • Sunscreen daily: broad-spectrum SPF, reapplied every few hours outdoors.
  • Gentle skincare: skip scrubs, strong acids and retinoids for two or three days after each session.
  • Hydration: a simple moisturizer helps with any dryness.
  • Heat: avoid saunas, jjimjilbang and intense exercise on the day of treatment.

Is pico toning safe? Side effects and risks

  • Common: mild redness and warmth for a few hours; slight dryness.
  • Less common: small pinpoint spots or mild darkening of pigment for a few days before fading.
  • Uncommon: post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (temporary darkening), more likely with sun exposure or too much energy.
  • Uncommon: mottled light spots (hypopigmentation), particularly with very frequent or aggressive toning. Conservative settings and sensible spacing reduce this risk.

A licensed doctor should set the energy and frequency for your skin type. See the pico toning vs laser toning comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Does pico toning work for melasma?

It can lighten melasma gradually over a course of sessions. Melasma is chronic, so maintenance treatment and daily sun protection are essential.

How many pico toning sessions do I need?

Usually 5–10 sessions one to two weeks apart, depending on the type of pigment. Dullness often improves after one session.

Is there downtime after pico toning?

Little to none. Most people have mild redness for a few hours and can wear makeup the same day or next morning.

Can I get pico toning with a tan?

It is better to wait until a fresh tan fades, because tanned skin has a higher risk of pigment changes after laser.
