Acne Scar Laser Treatment in Korea: Types and Expected Results — Myeongdong, Seoul
Acne Scar Laser Treatment in Korea: Types and Expected Results — a guide for visitors in Myeongdong, Seoul.
Quick answer

Acne scar laser treatment in Korea is matched to the scar type. Deeper rolling and boxcar scars usually respond best to CO2 fractional laser (5–7 days of redness and crusting) or Potenza RF microneedling (2–4 days of redness), while shallow scars and texture often suit pico fractional (1–3 days). Most people need 2–4 sessions and can expect meaningful improvement, not complete removal. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong in Seoul, CO2 fractional starts from ₩199,000, pico fractional from ₩149,000 and Potenza from ₩299,000 per full-face session (KRW, excluding 10% VAT).

Main options CO2 fractional, pico fractional, Potenza RF
Session time 30–60 minutes with numbing
Downtime 1–7 days depending on device
Sessions Usually 2–5, one to three months apart
Results Gradual improvement over months
Price in Seoul From ₩149,000 per session

Prices are in Korean won, exclude 10% VAT and are confirmed by a doctor at consultation.

What types of acne scars are there?

Acne scars form when deep inflammation damages collagen in the skin. Most are atrophic scars, meaning they sit below the surrounding skin. Identifying the type matters because each responds differently to laser.

Scar type What it looks like Typical approach
Rolling Broad, soft dips that give a wavy surface RF microneedling, CO2 fractional, sometimes subcision
Boxcar Round or oval depressions with sharp edges CO2 fractional, RF microneedling
Ice pick Narrow, deep, pinpoint holes Targeted techniques; lasers alone help less
Shallow texture Fine unevenness and enlarged pores Pico fractional, RF microneedling
Red or brown marks Flat discoloration, not true scars Excel V, IPL, toning

Many people have a mix. Flat red or brown marks after acne are not true scars and are treated with vascular or pigment lasers instead; see post-acne marks. For an overview of scars, visit our acne scars concern page.

Acne scar laser types used in Korea

CO2 fractional laser

CO2 fractional is an ablative laser. A 10,600 nm beam is split into thousands of microscopic columns that remove tiny cores of skin, leaving healthy skin in between to speed healing. The repair process builds new collagen, which can soften deeper scars more than gentler devices. The trade-off is 5–7 days of redness and crusting. See CO2 fractional laser.

Pico fractional laser

Pico fractional concentrates picosecond laser energy into tiny points that create remodeling zones beneath the surface while leaving the outer skin largely intact. It suits shallow scars, pores and texture, with 1–3 days of redness. See pico fractional.

Potenza RF microneedling

Strictly speaking Potenza is not a laser, but it is often discussed alongside them. Fine needles deliver radiofrequency energy at a set depth to stimulate collagen while the surface stays mostly intact. It works well for rolling scars, pores and active acne, with 2–4 days of redness. See Potenza RF microneedling.

How to choose between CO2, pico fractional and Potenza

There is no single best acne scar laser. The right choice balances scar depth, skin type, downtime tolerance and how many sessions you can attend.

CO2 fractional Pico fractional Potenza RF
Strength Highest per session Gentle Moderate to strong
Downtime 5–7 days 1–3 days 2–4 days
Best scar types Boxcar, deeper rolling Shallow texture, pores Rolling, pores, active acne
Pigment risk in darker skin Higher; settings adjusted Lower Lower
Typical spacing One to three months About four weeks Four to six weeks

If you have darker skin or a tendency to brown marks after injury, your doctor may favor RF microneedling or pico fractional, which disturb the surface less. If your scars are deep and you can accept a week of visible healing, CO2 fractional often gives the largest change per session. Many plans alternate devices over time, for example CO2 fractional on one visit and Potenza on the next, to address both depth and texture.

Supportive treatments can also help. Exosome therapy or other recovery boosters are sometimes applied after resurfacing to calm the skin, and collagen stimulators such as Juvelook may be considered for shallow scars. These are add-ons rather than replacements for the main treatment, and your doctor will explain whether they are worthwhile for you.

Who is a good candidate for acne scar laser treatment?

Usually a good fit

  • Settled acne scars with few active breakouts
  • Rolling, boxcar or shallow textural scars
  • People with time for a series of sessions
  • Realistic goal of improvement, not perfection

Talk to the doctor first

  • Active, inflamed acne (often treated first)
  • Isotretinoin within the past several months
  • A history of keloids or raised scars
  • Recent tan, or a tendency to dark marks after injury
  • Pregnancy

What to expect: realistic results

Laser treatment can make acne scars noticeably shallower and the skin surface smoother, but it rarely erases scars completely. Improvement builds slowly because new collagen takes weeks to months to form after each session.

  • After one session: skin often looks smoother once healed; scar depth changes are modest.
  • After 2–4 sessions: many people see a clear reduction in the shadowing that makes scars visible.
  • Months later: collagen keeps remodeling, so the result can continue to improve for several months after the final session.

Deep ice pick scars typically respond least to lasers alone. Your doctor may suggest combining approaches over time. See CO2 fractional results and our acne scar treatment plan.

What happens on treatment day

  1. Doctor assessment. Scars are examined under angled light to classify type and depth.
  2. Numbing. Numbing cream is applied for 30–40 minutes.
  3. Treatment. The doctor treats the face, often with extra passes on scarred zones.
  4. Calming care. Cooling and, where chosen, a recovery booster are applied.
  5. Aftercare plan. You receive written instructions and a contact number.

Recovery and risks

Expect redness, swelling and a tight feeling. After CO2 fractional, fine crusting usually lasts 5–7 days and skin may stay pink for a few weeks. Risks include post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, infection, prolonged redness and, rarely, scarring. Following aftercare carefully, avoiding sun and not picking at crusts lower these risks.

During the first week, cleanse gently with lukewarm water, apply the moisturizer or barrier cream your doctor recommends, and let crusts shed on their own. Makeup is usually best avoided until the surface has healed, typically after about a week for CO2 fractional and a day or two for pico fractional or Potenza. Pause retinoids and exfoliating acids until your doctor says it is safe to restart. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen daily for at least several weeks, because healing skin is more prone to pigment changes. If you notice increasing pain, yellow crusting, spreading redness or blisters, contact the clinic promptly; our guide to side effects and when to contact us explains what to watch for.

Flying home? After CO2 fractional, schedule treatment at least a week before your flight if you can, and keep skin moisturized on board. Our laser aftercare guide explains each stage.
