Quick answer

Laser hair removal uses medical-grade laser light absorbed by the pigment in hair. The heat damages the follicle and reduces its ability to regrow. Because only actively growing hairs respond, most areas need 5–8 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart on the face and 6–8 weeks on the body for long-term reduction. Sessions take 10–40 minutes with little or no downtime. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong in Seoul, laser hair removal starts from ₩39,000 per session for the underarms and ₩79,000 for the full face (KRW, excluding 10% VAT).

Treatment type Medical laser hair reduction
Session time 10–40 minutes
Downtime None to mild redness
Sessions Usually 5–8
Spacing 4–6 weeks (face), 6–8 weeks (body)
Price in Seoul From ₩39,000 per session

Prices are in Korean won, exclude 10% VAT and are confirmed by a doctor at consultation.

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal relies on a principle called selective photothermolysis. The laser emits light at a wavelength that is absorbed by melanin, the pigment in hair. The light energy turns into heat in the hair shaft and spreads to the follicle, damaging the structures responsible for regrowth. The surrounding skin, which contains less pigment, absorbs less energy, especially when cooling is used.

The result is long-term hair reduction rather than guaranteed permanent removal. Treated follicles may stop producing hair or produce finer, lighter hair. See our laser hair removal page for details.

Why you need multiple sessions: the hair growth cycle

Hair grows in cycles, and at any moment, follicles are in different phases.

Phase What happens Responds to laser?
Anagen (growth) Hair is actively growing and attached to the follicle Yes, best response
Catagen (transition) Hair detaches from its blood supply Limited
Telogen (resting) Hair rests and eventually sheds No

Because only growing hairs respond well, each session treats a portion of the follicles. Spacing sessions several weeks apart allows new follicles to enter the growth phase so they can be treated next time. This is why most areas need 5–8 sessions, and why the face, where hair cycles are shorter, can be treated a little more often than the body.

Who is a good candidate for laser hair removal?

Usually a good fit

  • Dark hair, which contains more pigment for the laser to target
  • Untanned skin at the time of treatment
  • People who can attend a series, in Seoul or by returning
  • Anyone tired of shaving, waxing or ingrown hairs

Talk to the doctor first

  • Very light blonde, gray, white or red hair (responds poorly)
  • A recent tan or sunburn
  • Pregnancy
  • Photosensitizing medication or recent isotretinoin
  • Sudden excess hair growth, which may need medical review

Does skin tone matter?

The ideal combination for laser hair removal is dark hair on lighter skin, because the contrast lets the laser target hair pigment while sparing the skin. Medium and darker skin tones can still be treated, but the doctor chooses settings and, where available, wavelengths that reduce the energy absorbed by the skin. Darker skin may need more conservative settings and sometimes more sessions. Tanned skin is a special case: recent sun exposure temporarily increases skin pigment and raises the risk of burns and pigment changes, so treatment is usually postponed until the tan fades.

Common treatment areas

  • Face: upper lip, chin, sideburns and full face. Men's beard shaping is priced at consultation.
  • Underarms: one of the quickest and most popular areas.
  • Legs: lower legs or full legs.
  • Other body areas: arms, back and others are priced at consultation.

What happens during a session

  1. Doctor consultation. Your skin type, hair color and medical history are checked, and the settings are planned.
  2. Shaving. The area should be shaved a day before or on the day; the hair below the skin is what the laser targets. Do not wax or pluck beforehand.
  3. Protection. Eye protection is worn, and the skin is cleansed.
  4. Treatment. The laser is passed over the area with cooling. Most people describe a quick snap like a rubber band.
  5. Soothing. A calming product is applied, and sunscreen on exposed areas.

Treatment planning: how to schedule your sessions

Planning is the most important part of laser hair removal, especially for international visitors.

Area Typical spacing Typical number of sessions
Face 4–6 weeks 5–8 or more
Underarms 6–8 weeks 5–8
Legs 6–8 weeks 5–8
  • If you visit Seoul often: schedule one session per trip and keep roughly to the recommended spacing.
  • If you live in or near Korea: a full course in Seoul is straightforward.
  • If this is a one-time trip: one session will reduce hair temporarily but will not give long-term results alone. Ask your doctor how to continue at home. See what if I cannot finish a series.

Results and what to expect

In the one to three weeks after a session, treated hairs often shed, which can look like regrowth before they fall out. After several sessions, many people notice that hair grows back more slowly, more sparsely and finer. Some hair may return over time, especially with hormonal changes, so occasional maintenance sessions are common. Results vary with hair color, thickness, skin type and hormones.

Is laser hair removal safe? Risks and side effects

Common, temporary effects include redness, mild swelling around follicles and a warm sensation for a few hours. Less common risks include temporary pigment changes, which are more likely on tanned or darker skin, blistering or burns if settings are not appropriate, and, rarely, paradoxical increased hair growth in some areas. Choosing settings for your skin type and avoiding treatment on tanned skin reduce these risks. Laser is not used directly over the eyes; eye protection is essential.

Aftercare

  • Avoid hot baths, saunas and intense exercise for a day.
  • Do not wax or pluck between sessions; shaving is fine.
  • Use sunscreen on treated, sun-exposed areas.
  • Avoid exfoliating the area for a few days.

Going to the beach next? Avoid strong sun on treated areas for at least a couple of weeks, and do not book a session straight after a tanning holiday. See can I get laser with a tan.

Laser vs other hair removal methods

Shaving and depilatory creams remove hair at the surface and need repeating every few days. Waxing and epilating pull hair from the root and last a few weeks but can cause irritation and ingrown hairs. Laser targets the follicle itself, so after a full course, many people find they need to shave far less often or not at all in treated areas. Laser does involve an upfront commitment of several sessions, but for many people the time saved and reduction in ingrown hairs make it worthwhile. Ingrown hairs and razor bumps, in particular, often improve noticeably as hair becomes finer and sparser.

Frequently asked questions

Is laser hair removal permanent?

It gives long-term hair reduction rather than guaranteed permanent removal. Many people have much less, finer hair after a full course, with occasional maintenance.

How many laser hair removal sessions do I need?

Most areas need 5–8 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart on the face and 6–8 weeks on the body.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most people describe a quick snap like a rubber band. Cooling makes it more comfortable, and smaller areas take only minutes.

Can I get laser hair removal on blonde or gray hair?

Light blonde, gray, white and red hair have little pigment, so they usually respond poorly to laser.

Should I shave before laser hair removal?

Yes, shave the area the day before or on the day. Do not wax or pluck, as the laser needs the hair root to be present.
