Korean lip filler is known for soft, natural shapes rather than dramatic volume. Here is how it works, what recovery really looks like day by day and how to plan it around a trip to Seoul.
Lip filler uses a soft hyaluronic acid (HA) gel to add shape, definition and hydration to the lips. Korean clinics generally favor a natural look, often starting with about 1cc. Treatment takes 20–30 minutes plus numbing, swelling usually settles in 2–4 days and results last about 6–12 months. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong in Seoul, lip filler starts from ₩190,000 for 1cc of soft Korean HA; Restylane Kysse and Juvéderm Volbella cost ₩320,000–₩350,000 per cc (KRW, excluding 10% VAT).
Prices are in Korean won, exclude 10% VAT and are confirmed by a doctor at consultation.
What is lip filler?
Lip filler is an injection of soft hyaluronic acid (HA) gel into the lips and the border around them. Lip fillers are softer and more flexible than those used in the chin or cheeks, so they move naturally when you talk, eat and smile. Depending on where the filler is placed, it can add volume, define the lip border, lift the corners of the mouth, correct asymmetry or simply improve hydration and fine vertical lines.
HA is a substance found naturally in the skin, and filler-grade HA is broken down gradually by the body over months. It can also be dissolved with hyaluronidase if needed, which makes it the standard choice for lips. See our lip filler treatment page and the lips area page.
What does natural Korean-style lip filler look like?
Korean lip trends tend to favor a soft, hydrated, slightly rounded look rather than very large or overdrawn lips. Common requests include:
- Subtle fullness. A little extra volume in the center of the lips, keeping natural proportions.
- Defined but soft border. Gentle definition without a hard outline.
- Lifted corners. A small amount at the mouth corners to reduce a downturned look.
- Hydration. Smoother lips with fewer vertical lines, without obvious volume.
- Balance. The upper and lower lips in proportion to each other and the rest of the face.
A natural result depends on the product, the amount and where it goes. Starting with about 1cc and adding more at a later visit is usually safer and more natural than doing everything at once. See thin lips for more.
Choosing between Korean and imported lip fillers
Korean soft HA fillers are widely used in Seoul and are designed to be flexible enough for the lips. Imported options such as Restylane Kysse and Juvéderm Volbella are made specifically for the lip area and have long track records internationally. Some visitors prefer an imported brand because it is the same product they could have at home, which makes future top-ups easier to match. Others choose a Korean HA for value. All are hyaluronic acid and can be dissolved if needed. The doctor will explain how each product behaves, for example how firm it feels and how much it tends to swell, and recommend one for your lips and goals.
Who is a good candidate for lip filler?
Usually a good fit
- Thin lips or lips that have lost volume with age
- Mild asymmetry or an undefined border
- Dry lips with fine vertical lines
- People who want a gradual, natural change
Talk to the doctor first
- Frequent cold sores (antiviral medication may be needed first)
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding or autoimmune conditions
- Previous permanent filler or lip implants
- Dental work planned in the next two weeks
What happens on treatment day
- English consultation. The doctor looks at your lips at rest and smiling, discusses the shape you want and agrees the product, volume and price.
- Numbing. Topical numbing cream is applied for about 20–30 minutes; lip fillers also contain lidocaine.
- Injection. Small amounts are placed slowly with a fine needle or cannula, checking symmetry throughout.
- Shaping and review. The doctor may gently mold the filler, and you check the result in a mirror.
- Aftercare. A cool pack reduces swelling, and you receive written instructions in English.
Lip filler recovery: what to expect day by day
| When | What is normal |
|---|---|
| Day 0 | Lips look fuller than the final result; tenderness and possible pinpoint bruises |
| Days 1–2 | Swelling usually peaks; lips may feel firm or slightly uneven |
| Days 3–4 | Most swelling settles; you look presentable for photos |
| Week 2 | Filler integrates and softens; this is your true result |
| Months 6–12 | Gradual fading; a smaller top-up maintains the shape |
Swelling is often uneven in the first two days, especially in the morning, so avoid judging the result too early. If there is still noticeable asymmetry at two weeks, the doctor can review it. See how long lip filler swelling lasts and lip filler results.
Aftercare tips
- First 24 hours: avoid lipstick, very hot drinks, kissing and drinking through straws if lips are sore.
- First 48 hours: skip saunas, jjimjilbang, intense exercise and alcohol; use a cool pack gently.
- Sleeping: sleep on your back with your head raised for the first night or two.
- Cold sores: if you are prone to them, tell the doctor in advance; filler can trigger an outbreak.
Is lip filler safe? Risks and side effects
Lip filler is common, but the lips have a rich blood supply, so it is not a minor procedure.
- Common: swelling, tenderness, bruising and temporary firmness.
- Less common: lumps, unevenness or filler moving above the lip border (sometimes called a filler mustache), which usually happens with too much product over time. HA can be dissolved.
- Uncommon: cold sore outbreaks, infection or delayed nodules.
- Rare but serious: vascular occlusion, where filler blocks an artery in the lip. Signs include severe pain, white or dusky patches and coldness. It needs urgent treatment.

Lip filler with other treatments
Lip filler is often combined with other treatments in the same trip. Botox for a gummy smile or a downturned mouth can complement filler, and a skin booster can improve the area around the lips. Ask the doctor about timing: lip filler is usually done after laser or lifting treatments on the same day, or on a separate day. Read can I get Botox and filler on the same day.
Flying home? You can usually fly one to two days after lip filler. Swelling may increase slightly during a long flight, so stay hydrated and avoid alcohol. See flying after Botox and fillers.
