Potenza vs Traditional Microneedling: Results and Downtime Compared — a guide for visitors in Myeongdong, Seoul.
Quick answer

Traditional microneedling creates tiny channels in the skin to trigger collagen repair and help serums absorb, with about 1–2 days of redness. Potenza is RF microneedling: the needles also release radiofrequency heat at a controlled depth, giving a stronger collagen response for acne scars, large pores and texture, with about 2–4 days of redness. Potenza usually needs fewer sessions for scars. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong in Seoul, Potenza starts from ₩299,000 and microneedling with exosomes from ₩190,000 per full-face session (KRW, excluding 10% VAT).

Potenza vs traditional microneedling: the short answer

Traditional microneedling is a gentle collagen-induction treatment that improves mild texture and helps serums or boosters reach deeper into the skin. Potenza adds radiofrequency (RF) energy at the needle tips, delivering controlled heat exactly where collagen is rebuilt. That extra energy usually means a stronger result for acne scars and large pores, at the cost of a little more downtime and a higher price per session.

If your main goal is glow and hydration, microneedling with a booster may be all you need. If your goal is visible scar or pore improvement, Potenza is usually the more effective choice.

Microneedling at home vs in a clinic

Many visitors have tried derma rollers or at-home microneedling pens. These use much shorter needles and are designed for product absorption rather than real collagen remodeling. In-clinic microneedling reaches a controlled depth with sterile, single-use needle cartridges, and a doctor adjusts the depth for different parts of the face. Home devices also carry a higher risk of infection and irritation if they are not cleaned properly or are used on active breakouts. If you have been using one, mention it at your consultation so your doctor can plan around any recent irritation.

The same logic applies when comparing standard microneedling with RF microneedling. Each step up in strength brings a bigger collagen response, a little more downtime and a higher cost. The right choice is the one that matches your concern rather than the strongest option available.

What is traditional microneedling?

Microneedling uses a device with many fine needles to create tiny, controlled channels in the skin. The skin responds by starting its natural repair process, which includes producing new collagen and elastin. The channels also temporarily increase how much of a topical product can penetrate, which is why microneedling is often paired with growth-factor serums or exosomes.

  • Downtime: redness for about 1–2 days.
  • Sessions: often 3–5, a few weeks apart.
  • Best for: mild texture, dullness, fine lines and booster delivery.

At Dernia, microneedling is offered with exosome therapy rather than as a bare procedure.

What is Potenza RF microneedling?

Potenza is an RF microneedling device from Cynosure. Fine needles enter the skin to a set depth and release radiofrequency energy at their tips, heating the deeper layers to stimulate collagen while the surface stays largely intact. Because the doctor can choose the depth and energy for different areas, it can target acne scars, pores and oil glands more precisely than needling alone.

  • Downtime: redness for about 2–4 days, sometimes pinpoint marks.
  • Sessions: usually about 3, four to six weeks apart.
  • Best for: acne scars, large pores, rough texture and active acne.

Potenza vs microneedling side-by-side

Traditional microneedling Potenza RF microneedling
Mechanism Mechanical micro-channels Micro-channels plus RF heat
Depth control Set by needle length Set depth with energy at the tip
Strength for scars Mild Moderate to strong
Downtime 1–2 days of redness 2–4 days of redness
Sessions Often 3–5 Usually about 3
Numbing Yes Yes, always
Price at Dernia From ₩190,000 (with exosomes) From ₩299,000

Why adding RF changes results

Needles alone create a mechanical injury that the skin repairs. Adding RF energy at the needle tips creates small zones of controlled heat in the dermis. Heat causes collagen fibers to contract and triggers a stronger, more sustained remodeling response. Because the energy is delivered beneath the surface, the outer skin heals quickly, which keeps downtime short relative to the strength of the treatment. Insulated or semi-insulated needles further protect the surface by focusing heat at the tip.

In practice, this means Potenza can soften rolling acne scars and visibly tighten enlarged pores in a way that standard microneedling rarely matches, especially on oily or thicker skin. Standard microneedling remains useful when the priority is gentle renewal or delivering a booster with minimal downtime.

Who is a good candidate for each?

Usually a good fit

  • Microneedling: mild texture, dullness and booster delivery
  • Microneedling: first-time treatment with minimal downtime
  • Potenza: rolling acne scars and enlarged pores
  • Potenza: oily, acne-prone skin and medium to darker skin tones

Talk to the doctor first

  • Active infection, cold sores or eczema in the area
  • Isotretinoin within recent months
  • Pacemakers or metal implants (for RF)
  • Keloid tendency, pregnancy or bleeding disorders

What happens on treatment day

  1. English consultation. A licensed doctor examines your skin and agrees the treatment, depth and price.
  2. Numbing. Numbing cream is applied for about 30–40 minutes.
  3. Treatment. The handpiece is passed over the face in sections. Potenza adds a warm, prickling sensation.
  4. Booster and calming. A booster such as exosomes may be applied through the fresh channels, then soothing care.
  5. Aftercare. You receive written aftercare in English.

Results and downtime timeline

When Microneedling Potenza
Day 0–1 Redness like a mild sunburn Redness, warmth, possible pinpoint marks
Days 2–4 Mostly settled; light flaking Redness fading; makeup usually fine by day 2–3
Weeks 2–4 Fresher, smoother skin Smoother texture, pores look tighter
Months 3–6 Gradual improvement after a series Clearer scar softening as collagen matures

These are typical ranges, not promises. See Potenza results.

Is it safe? Risks and side effects

  • Both: redness, mild swelling, dryness and pinpoint bleeding during treatment.
  • Microneedling: rarely, infection or irritation from products applied to open channels, which is why only sterile, clinic-grade products are used.
  • Potenza: rarely, grid-like marks, temporary darkening or small burns if energy is too high.

Avoid makeup for about a day, saunas and intense exercise for a few days, and use sunscreen daily. Read skincare after treatments.
