Quick answer

Thermage FLX uses monopolar radiofrequency to tighten skin and rebuild collagen with no needles and almost no downtime; results build over two to six months and commonly last 12–18 months. A thread lift uses dissolvable PDO threads to physically lift sagging tissue, giving an immediate effect but with 3–7 days of swelling or bruising and higher risks such as dimpling or asymmetry. Thermage suits loose, crepey skin; threads suit moderate tissue descent. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, Thermage FLX starts from ₩990,000 (300 shots) and a thread lift from ₩690,000 per area, excluding 10% VAT.

Thermage FLX vs thread lift: the short answer

These two treatments solve different parts of facial aging. Thermage FLX improves the skin itself: it uses radiofrequency heat to tighten the dermis and build new collagen, so loose, crepey skin looks firmer and smoother. A thread lift addresses tissue that has dropped: dissolvable threads are placed under the skin to hold the mid-cheek or jowls in a higher position.

Thermage is needle-free with almost no recovery; a thread lift is minimally invasive with a few days of visible recovery and a higher risk profile. Both results commonly last around 12–18 months. For a broader overview, see Korean lifting treatments explained.

How does Thermage FLX work?

Thermage FLX, from Solta Medical, delivers monopolar RF through a single-use tip that measures the skin before each pulse and adjusts energy. Cooling spray protects the surface. The heat makes existing collagen contract and prompts new collagen over two to six months. A dedicated eye tip can treat the eyelids. See the Thermage FLX page.

How does a thread lift work?

A thread lift uses fine threads made of PDO (polydioxanone), which dissolve over time. After local anesthetic, the doctor inserts the threads through small entry points along planned vectors. Barbed or cog threads grip and lift tissue; finer threads mainly add firmness. As the threads dissolve, collagen that forms around them helps maintain support. See the thread lift page.

Which is right for you?

  • Thermage FLX suits people whose main concern is skin quality: crepiness, loss of firmness, early softening of the jawline, or mild eyelid hooding, and who want no visible recovery.
  • A thread lift suits people with moderate descent of the mid-cheek or jowls who want a more noticeable lift than energy devices can give, and who can plan a few quiet days.
  • Both together can make sense when there is both tissue descent and loose skin, usually on separate visits so the doctor can plan safely.

Neither replaces a surgical facelift for heavy sagging. Explore options by concern on our sagging skin page.

Usually a good fit

  • Thermage: mild to moderate laxity, crepey skin, eyelid hooding
  • Threads: moderate cheek or jowl descent with reasonable skin thickness
  • Realistic expectations about non-surgical results

Talk to the doctor first

  • Heavy sagging or excess skin
  • Pacemakers or implanted electronic devices (Thermage)
  • Blood thinners, bleeding disorders, keloid tendency or very thin skin (threads)
  • Pregnancy, active infection or autoimmune conditions

Results timeline: what to expect and when

The two treatments follow very different curves. With Thermage FLX, you may notice a slightly firmer, fresher look on the day, early smoothing around one month, and the peak result at three to six months as new collagen matures. With a thread lift, the lift is visible straight away but can look slightly over-corrected while swelling is present; it settles into a more natural position over two to four weeks, and the collagen effect continues for several months as the threads dissolve.

Because part of each result arrives after you are home, take photos in the same light before treatment and again at one, three and six months. Typical timelines are on the Thermage FLX results page. Sun protection, stable weight and good sleep all help results last.

Recovery: what to expect

After Thermage FLX

Most people have mild redness for a few hours and nothing more. Some notice tenderness over the jaw or cheekbones, or slight swelling, for a few days. You can usually wear makeup and continue sightseeing the same day. Skip saunas and intense workouts for a day or two. See Can I exercise after Thermage?

After a thread lift

Expect swelling, bruising, tightness and some soreness for about 3–7 days. Small puckers near entry points are common early on and usually settle as swelling goes down. You will usually be asked to:

  1. Sleep on your back with your head slightly raised for the first nights.
  2. Avoid wide mouth opening, hard chewing and dental work for the period your doctor advises.
  3. Skip facial massage, saunas and intense exercise until cleared.
  4. Keep entry points clean and follow the written aftercare you receive in English.

Risks and side effects compared

Thermage FLX has a long safety record when performed with genuine tips by trained medical staff. Common effects are short-lived redness and mild swelling. Uncommonly, small blisters, temporary bumps or tingling can occur. Rarely, uneven heating can cause burns or contour changes.

Thread lifts carry more risk because threads are placed under the skin. Common effects include bruising, swelling and tenderness. Less common risks include dimpling, asymmetry, threads that can be felt or seen, migration or extrusion, infection and temporary nerve irritation. Some complications need threads to be adjusted or removed. Choosing a doctor experienced with facial anatomy and sterile technique matters.

Contact the clinic promptly if you notice increasing pain, redness, warmth, discharge, fever, a thread poking through the skin, or blistering after Thermage. Our guide to side effects and when to contact us explains what is normal.

Planning Thermage or threads around your Seoul trip

  • Book ahead. Send your dates and photos via the consultation form so a doctor can suggest a plan.
  • Avoid your arrival day. Schedule treatment for day two or later.
  • Thread lift timing. Have threads early in your trip, ideally with five to seven days before departure, so the doctor can check you.
  • Getting here. Dernia is near Myeongdong Station (Line 4) and Euljiro 1-ga Station (Line 2).

Flying home? After Thermage, most people can fly the next day. After a thread lift, fly once the doctor has checked you, and expect some swelling during the flight. Our aftercare guide covers both in English.
