Thermage FLX vs Volnewmer: Differences in Technology and Treatment — a guide for visitors in Myeongdong, Seoul.
Quick answer

Thermage FLX and Volnewmer are both monopolar radiofrequency (RF) devices that heat the deep dermis to tighten skin and stimulate collagen. Thermage FLX, from Solta Medical, has the longest track record, adjusts energy before each pulse and commonly lasts 12–18 months. Volnewmer, made by Classys in Korea, uses a water-cooled tip for comfort and usually lasts about 6–12 months at a lower price. Both need little or no downtime. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, Thermage FLX starts from ₩990,000 and Volnewmer from ₩390,000 for 300 shots, excluding 10% VAT.

Thermage FLX vs Volnewmer: the short answer

Both devices use monopolar radiofrequency (RF) to heat the deep dermis. That heat contracts existing collagen and starts a remodeling process that produces new collagen over the following months, so skin looks firmer, smoother and less crepey. Neither uses needles or incisions, and both have little or no downtime.

The differences are in the maker, tip and cooling design, energy control, longevity and price. Thermage FLX is the long-established original, usually chosen as a once-a-year treatment. Volnewmer is a Korean device, often chosen by people who want regular RF tightening at a lower cost per session. For background, see Korean lifting treatments explained.

How does Thermage FLX work?

Thermage FLX is the fourth-generation system from Solta Medical. Energy is delivered through a single-use tip that measures the skin before each pulse and adjusts output to keep heating even. Cooling spray protects the surface and vibration improves comfort. A dedicated eye tip allows treatment of the upper and lower eyelids. One session is usually enough, with results peaking at three to six months and commonly lasting 12–18 months. See the Thermage FLX page.

How does Volnewmer work?

Volnewmer is made by Classys, the Korean company behind Shurink. Its treatment tip is cooled by circulating water, which protects the surface while RF heat reaches the deeper dermis. This design is intended to keep the treatment comfortable and the heating consistent across each area. It is used for the face, jawline and neck, and results usually last about six to twelve months. See the Volnewmer page.

Differences in the treatment experience

The appointment is similar for both devices: an English consultation, numbing cream, marking, then pulse-by-pulse treatment over each area. The main differences you may notice are:

  • Sensation. Thermage delivers short, intense bursts of heat followed by cooling spray and vibration. Volnewmer is often described as a steadier, gentler warmth thanks to its water-cooled tip. Comfort is personal, and both can be adjusted.
  • Session length. Thermage appointments are usually longer, especially with higher shot counts or the eye tip.
  • Eyelids. If hooding or crepiness on the eyelids is a concern, Thermage's eye tip is a specific advantage.
  • Verification. With Thermage, you can ask to see the sealed single-use tip opened and the final shot count.

Which gives better results?

The type of result is the same: tighter, smoother-looking skin and gradual firming of mild laxity. The main differences are how long it lasts and how many sessions you plan. Thermage tends to give longer-lasting results from one session. Volnewmer gives a similar effect that usually needs repeating sooner, at a lower cost each time. Over a year, one Thermage session can be compared with one or two Volnewmer sessions.

With either device, you may notice a fresh, slightly firmer look on the day, then early change around one month as collagen starts to rebuild, and the main result at two to six months. Because the peak usually arrives after you are home, take photos in the same light before treatment and again at one, three and six months. Daily sunscreen, stable weight and good sleep help any result last longer, while heavy sun exposure and smoking shorten it.

If you have both crepey skin and deeper sagging along the jaw, your doctor may suggest adding an ultrasound lifting treatment such as Ulthera Prime or Shurink, which works on the deeper support layer that RF does not reach. Neither replaces surgery for heavy sagging. Typical timelines are on the Thermage FLX results and Volnewmer results pages.

Who is a good candidate?

Usually a good fit

  • Mild to moderate laxity on the face, jawline or neck
  • Crepey or thinning skin
  • Thermage: eyelid hooding, wanting one session a year
  • Volnewmer: regular maintenance on a smaller budget

Talk to the doctor first

  • Pacemakers or implanted electronic devices
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Heavy sagging or excess skin
  • Active infection, open wounds or a recent procedure in the area

Is it safe? Risks and side effects

Monopolar RF has been used for many years and is considered low risk when performed under medical supervision. Expect redness and warmth for a few hours, sometimes mild swelling or tenderness over the jaw and cheekbones for a few days. Uncommonly, small blisters, temporary bumps or tingling may occur. Rarely, uneven heating can cause burns or contour changes, which is why trained staff, genuine tips and appropriate settings matter. Contact the clinic promptly if you notice blistering, worsening pain or numbness that does not settle.

When comparing clinics, confirm that a licensed doctor examines you, that the shot count is agreed in advance, and that you receive written aftercare in English. Our guide to choosing a skin clinic lists more checks. Also tell the doctor about any filler, threads, implants or medical conditions before treatment, since these can affect which device and settings are appropriate, and whether the session should be postponed.

Planning RF tightening around your Seoul trip

  • Book ahead. Send your dates and concerns through the consultation form so a plan can be suggested before you arrive.
  • Avoid your arrival day. Schedule treatment for day two or later.
  • One appointment. Both are usually single sessions, which suits a short trip, and you can return to sightseeing or shopping the same day.
  • Getting here. Dernia is near Myeongdong Station (Line 4) and Euljiro 1-ga Station (Line 2).

Flying home? Neither treatment leaves wounds, so most people can fly the next day. Skip saunas, jjimjilbang and intense exercise for a day or two, and use sunscreen daily to protect new collagen. See our aftercare guide.
