Quick answer

Chin filler uses a firm hyaluronic acid (HA) gel to add projection or length to the chin, improving the balance between the nose, lips and jaw and creating a smoother V-line. Treatment takes 20–30 minutes, most people need 1–2cc, swelling settles in 1–3 days and results usually last about 12–18 months. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong in Seoul, Korean HA filler starts from ₩150,000 for 1cc and ₩280,000 for 2cc; Restylane and Juvéderm cost ₩290,000–₩350,000 per cc (KRW, excluding 10% VAT).

What is chin filler?

Chin filler is an injection of hyaluronic acid (HA) gel along the bone of the chin to change its shape. A firmer, more cohesive HA product is used than for the lips, because the chin needs a gel that holds its shape and resists the movement of the surrounding muscles. Depending on where the filler is placed, it can bring a short chin forward, lengthen it slightly, narrow a wide chin visually or smooth a dimpled, uneven surface.

In Korea, the chin is often treated as the anchor of facial balance. A small change in chin projection can make the nose look smaller, the lips more balanced and the jaw-to-neck line more defined, which is why it is so often part of non-surgical V-line contouring. See our dermal filler page and chin area treatments.

What can chin filler improve?

  • A short or receding chin. Adding projection improves the side profile and balances the nose and lips.
  • A soft jaw-to-neck angle. A slightly longer chin can make the lower face look more defined.
  • Facial proportions. A more defined chin point helps create the tapered V-line many visitors ask about.
  • Chin dimpling. Small amounts of filler can smooth a pebbled surface, often combined with Botox for an overactive chin muscle.
  • Asymmetry. Mild unevenness can be balanced with careful placement.

What does a natural Korean-style chin look like?

Doctors in Seoul usually aim for a chin that sits roughly in line with the lower lip in profile, with a soft, rounded point rather than a sharp or jutting tip. From the front, the chin should be narrower than the jaw angles so the lower face tapers gently. These are general guides rather than fixed rules; ethnicity, face shape and personal preference all matter. A good consultation looks at your whole face, not just the chin, and the doctor should be willing to recommend less filler than you expected if that gives a better balance.

Bringing reference photos can help, but ideally of faces with a similar bone structure to yours. A shape that suits a long, narrow face may look very different on a round or wide face.

Is chin filler right for you?

Usually a good fit

  • Mildly short or receding chin
  • People who want a reversible change before considering surgery
  • Those looking for a softer V-line without incisions
  • Healthy adults with realistic expectations

Talk to the doctor first

  • A strongly receding chin or bite problems (a jaw or dental assessment may suit better)
  • Existing permanent filler or implants in the chin
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding or autoimmune conditions
  • Active acne, infection or planned dental work in the next few weeks

Dernia does not offer chin implants or jaw surgery. If filler is unlikely to give you the change you want, the doctor will say so plainly and explain the general alternatives. For width from a bulky chewing muscle rather than the chin itself, jaw Botox may be more useful, and the two are often combined.

What happens on treatment day

  1. English consultation. The doctor looks at your profile, front view and smile, discusses the shape you want and agrees the product, volume and price.
  2. Photos and marking. Reference photos are taken and the injection plan is marked.
  3. Numbing. Topical numbing cream is applied; most chin fillers also contain lidocaine.
  4. Injection. Filler is placed deep near the bone with a needle or blunt cannula, shaping as the doctor goes. You may feel pressure rather than sharp pain.
  5. Review. You check the shape in a mirror, and small adjustments can be made before you leave.

Chin filler results: what to expect and when

When What you may notice
Day 0 Immediate change in shape, with some swelling and tenderness
Days 1–3 Swelling peaks and starts to settle; small bruises possible
Week 2 Filler integrates with tissue; this is the true result
Months 12–18 Gradual softening as the HA breaks down; a top-up keeps the shape

The chin is a relatively stable area with less movement than the lips, so results often last longer there. Duration depends on the product, volume, your metabolism and how active your chin muscle is. See dermal filler results.

Is chin filler safe? Risks and side effects

Chin filler is considered one of the lower-risk filler areas, but it is still a medical procedure with real risks.

  • Common: swelling, tenderness, bruising and a feeling of firmness for a few days.
  • Less common: unevenness, lumps or migration of filler over time, which HA can usually correct with hyaluronidase.
  • Uncommon: infection or delayed inflammatory nodules, sometimes linked to dental infections, which is why recent or upcoming dental work matters.
  • Rare but serious: vascular occlusion if filler enters or compresses a blood vessel. Severe pain, blanching or dusky, mottled skin need urgent attention.
  • Over-filling: too much volume can make the chin look long or pointed. Gradual, conservative dosing avoids this.

Ask which product is being used, check that it is sealed and genuine, and make sure the clinic gives you clear aftercare and an emergency contact. Our guide on how to choose a skin clinic in Seoul has a checklist.

Recovery and aftercare

  • First 24 hours: avoid pressing on the chin, wearing tight masks against it or resting your chin on your hand.
  • First 2–3 days: skip saunas, jjimjilbang, intense exercise and alcohol, which can increase swelling.
  • First two weeks: avoid facial massage and dental treatment if possible.
  • Watch for: increasing pain, color change in the skin or signs of infection, and contact the clinic straight away if they appear.

Flying home? Most people can fly one to two days after chin filler. Try to stay three to five days if you can, so the doctor can review the shape once swelling has settled. See flying after Botox and fillers.

How much filler do I need for my chin?

Most people need 1–2cc. A doctor assesses your profile and usually starts conservatively, since more can be added later.

How long does chin filler last?

Usually about 12–18 months. The chin moves less than the lips, so filler there tends to last longer.

Can chin filler replace a chin implant?

For a mild to moderate change, filler can give a similar effect without surgery. For a strongly receding chin, filler may not be enough. Dernia does not offer chin implants.

How much is chin filler in Seoul?

At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, Korean HA filler is ₩150,000 for 1cc or ₩280,000 for 2cc, and imported brands cost ₩290,000–₩350,000 per cc, excluding 10% VAT.

Is chin filler reversible?

Yes. HA filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if needed.
