Redness and Rosacea Treatments in Korea: Safe Clinical Options — a guide for visitors in Myeongdong, Seoul.
Quick answer

Redness and rosacea are usually treated in Korea with vascular lasers and light that target visible blood vessels, combined with calming care and trigger management. Excel V, which combines 532 nm and 1064 nm wavelengths, is a strong option for persistent redness and broken capillaries, while IPL helps diffuse redness and pigment together; LDM ultrasound is used to soothe sensitive skin. Most people need 2–4 sessions. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong in Seoul, Excel V starts from ₩149,000 and IPL from ₩89,000 per full-face session (KRW, excluding 10% VAT).

Main options Excel V, IPL, LDM, medical care
Session time 20–30 minutes
Downtime Mild redness for 1–2 days (Excel V)
Sessions Usually 2–4, 3–4 weeks apart
Results Gradual reduction in redness
Price in Seoul From ₩89,000 per session

Prices are in Korean won, exclude 10% VAT and are confirmed by a doctor at consultation.

What causes facial redness?

Not all facial redness is rosacea. A doctor first works out what is behind it, because treatment depends on the cause.

Cause Typical features
Rosacea Flushing, persistent central redness, visible vessels, sometimes bumps
Broken capillaries Fine red lines around the nose and cheeks
Post-acne red marks Flat red spots where breakouts used to be
Irritated or sensitized skin Redness and stinging after products or over-exfoliation
Other skin conditions Such as seborrheic dermatitis or eczema, which need medical treatment

Understanding rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that usually affects the central face. It often begins with easy flushing and can progress to persistent redness, visible blood vessels and, in some people, acne-like bumps. The exact cause is not fully understood, but blood vessel reactivity, immune factors and the skin barrier all play roles. Triggers vary between people and commonly include sun, heat, hot drinks, spicy food, alcohol, stress, temperature changes and some skincare products.

Because rosacea is chronic, treatments aim to control it rather than cure it. A good plan combines in-clinic treatment for visible vessels and redness with gentle skincare, trigger management and, where appropriate, medical therapy.

Clinical options for redness and rosacea in Korea

Excel V vascular laser

Excel V from Cutera combines two wavelengths. The 532 nm wavelength targets fine surface vessels and red marks, while 1064 nm reaches deeper, larger vessels. This makes it a strong option for persistent redness, rosacea, broken capillaries around the nose and cheeks, and red marks after acne. Most people need 2–4 sessions three to four weeks apart, with mild redness for 1–2 days. See Excel V laser.

IPL photofacial

IPL uses filtered broad-spectrum light that targets small red vessels and brown pigment at the same time, making it useful for diffuse redness combined with sun damage. It is not suitable on tanned skin. See IPL photofacial.

LDM Water Drop

LDM is a gentle dual-frequency ultrasound used to soothe and hydrate sensitive skin. It does not remove vessels but can make reactive skin feel calmer, and it is often added after a vascular laser.

Medical therapy

Topical or oral treatments prescribed after assessment can help control rosacea inflammation and bumps. On a short trip, your doctor will consider how you can continue care at home.

Which redness treatment is right for you?

Usually a good fit

  • Persistent redness or visible capillaries (Excel V)
  • Redness mixed with sun spots (IPL)
  • Red marks left after acne (Excel V)
  • Reactive, sensitive skin needing calm (LDM)

Talk to the doctor first

  • An active rosacea flare with many bumps
  • A tan or recent sun exposure
  • Photosensitizing medication or recent isotretinoin
  • Pregnancy
  • Redness with scaling, itching or other symptoms

What happens during a vascular laser session

  1. Doctor assessment. The doctor confirms the cause of redness and whether vessels, inflammation or both are involved.
  2. Cleansing and eye protection. The face is cleansed and eye shields are fitted.
  3. Treatment. The laser is passed over red areas with cooling. Most people feel quick snaps of warmth.
  4. Calming. Cooling and, if chosen, LDM ultrasound settle the skin.
  5. Aftercare. Sunscreen is applied, and you receive written instructions.

Results timeline

After a vascular laser, redness may look slightly stronger for a day or two, then begin to fade. Fine vessels can disappear quickly, while diffuse redness improves gradually over a series. Many people notice clearer, calmer skin after two to four sessions. Because rosacea is chronic, new redness and vessels can develop over time, and maintenance sessions once or twice a year are common.

Is it safe? Risks and side effects

Common effects include temporary redness, mild swelling and warmth. Less common risks include bruising (purpura), particularly with stronger settings, temporary pigment changes, especially on tanned or darker skin, and rarely blistering. A gentle, doctor-led approach is especially important for rosacea, because over-aggressive treatment or harsh products can trigger flares. See side effects and when to contact us.

How Excel V and IPL differ in practice

Both treatments target red pigment in blood vessels, but they behave differently. Excel V is a laser with defined wavelengths, which lets the doctor trace individual vessels precisely with 532 nm or reach deeper vessels with 1064 nm. IPL emits a broad band of filtered light, so it covers large areas quickly and treats redness and brown spots at the same time, but it is less precise for individual vessels and more sensitive to skin tone and tanning. In general, people with visible capillaries or persistent central redness often do well with Excel V, while people with sun-damaged skin showing both redness and spots may benefit from IPL. Some plans use both at different times.

Why treatment is planned conservatively for rosacea

Rosacea skin reacts strongly to heat and irritation. If treatment is too aggressive, it can trigger a flare that lasts longer than the treatment benefit. Doctors therefore start with moderate settings, observe how your skin responds, and increase gradually over sessions. If inflammatory bumps are active, they may be calmed with medical treatment first. This measured approach may take a little longer, but it is usually more comfortable and more reliable for sensitive, flushing skin.

Daily care for redness-prone skin

  • Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and moisturizer.
  • Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen every day; mineral formulas are often better tolerated.
  • Avoid hot water, saunas and jjimjilbang.
  • Notice and limit personal triggers, such as alcohol or spicy food.
  • Introduce new products one at a time.

Visiting in summer? Seoul summers are hot and humid, which can trigger flushing. Plan indoor activities after treatment and carry sunscreen. Our seasonal planning guide explains the best times to treat redness.

Frequently asked questions

Can rosacea be cured with laser?

No. Rosacea is chronic, but vascular lasers can significantly reduce redness and visible vessels. Maintenance and trigger management help keep it under control.

Is Excel V or IPL better for redness?

Excel V is often preferred for persistent redness and visible capillaries, while IPL suits diffuse redness combined with sun spots. Your doctor recommends based on your skin.

How many sessions do I need for redness?

Most people need 2–4 sessions spaced three to four weeks apart.

Is there downtime after Excel V?

Usually mild redness for 1–2 days. Bruising is uncommon but possible with stronger settings.

Can I get laser for redness if I have a tan?

Usually not. Tanned skin raises the risk of burns and pigment changes, so your doctor may advise waiting.
