Facial Skin Laxity: Causes and Korean Lifting Treatment Options — Myeongdong, Seoul
Facial Skin Laxity: Causes and Korean Lifting Treatment Options — a guide for visitors in Myeongdong, Seoul.
Quick answer

Facial skin laxity is caused by collagen and elastin loss, weakening of the deeper SMAS and ligaments, fat pad descent and bone changes, accelerated by sun, smoking and weight changes. In Korea, mild laxity is often treated with RF (Thermage FLX, Oligio X) or HIFU (Shurink Universe, Ulthera Prime); moderate laxity may add a PDO thread lift or collagen stimulators. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong in Seoul, Shurink Universe starts from ₩149,000 for 300 shots, Oligio X from ₩390,000 for 300 shots and Ulthera Prime from ₩390,000 for 100 lines (KRW, excluding 10% VAT).

Main causes Collagen loss, SMAS laxity, fat descent
Mild laxity RF or HIFU
Moderate laxity HIFU + RF, threads, stimulators
Downtime None to about 7 days
Results Gradual; peak at 2–6 months
Price in Seoul From ₩149,000 (Shurink, 300 shots)

What is facial skin laxity?

Skin laxity means skin and the tissues beneath it have lost some of their firmness and ability to spring back. It shows up as a softer jawline, early jowls, deeper smile lines, lowered brows, crepey texture and looseness under the chin. Laxity is a normal part of aging, but its speed varies widely between people.

Understanding the cause of your laxity is the key to choosing the right treatment. Our sagging skin page summarizes the options available at Dernia.

What causes skin laxity?

Collagen and elastin loss

Collagen production slows gradually from the mid-20s, and elastin fibers become fragmented. The dermis becomes thinner and less resilient, which shows as fine lines and crepiness.

SMAS and ligament weakening

The SMAS is a fibrous layer that supports facial tissue, and ligaments anchor it to bone. As these loosen, tissue moves downward, forming jowls and deeper folds.

Fat pad changes

Facial fat pads shrink in some places and descend in others. Volume loss in the cheeks and temples makes the lower face look heavier.

Bone remodeling

The facial skeleton gradually changes with age, reducing support for overlying tissue around the eyes, cheeks and jaw.

Lifestyle accelerators

  • UV exposure: the biggest external cause of collagen breakdown.
  • Smoking: reduces blood flow and damages collagen.
  • Weight fluctuations: repeated gain and loss stretches the skin.
  • Poor sleep and stress: can affect skin repair over time.

What stage is your skin laxity?

Stage What you may notice Typical Korean approach
Early (often late 20s–30s) Slightly softer jawline, fine lines, less bounce RF or HIFU for prevention; skin boosters
Mild (often 30s–40s) Early jowls, mild under-chin looseness, crepey eyelids HIFU and/or RF; collagen stimulators
Moderate (often 40s–50s) Visible jowls, deeper folds, neck laxity HIFU + RF combination, thread lift, volume support
Advanced Heavy jowls, excess skin, strong neck bands Surgical opinion; non-surgical for maintenance

Ages are approximate; genetics, sun exposure and lifestyle make a large difference. A doctor will assess your stage in person.

Korean lifting treatment options for skin laxity

Focused ultrasound (HIFU)

HIFU targets the SMAS, making it the main non-surgical option for structural lift. Ulthera Prime offers real-time imaging and longer-lasting results; Shurink Universe is quicker, more affordable and often repeated. See Korean lifting treatments explained.

Radiofrequency (RF)

Thermage FLX, Oligio X and Volnewmer heat the dermis to tighten skin and improve texture. RF is particularly helpful for crepey skin and the eyelids. Compare approaches in HIFU vs RF lifting.

Laser and microwave options

Titanium Lifting gives an immediate, comfortable firming with no downtime, while ONDA targets fullness and laxity in the lower face.

PDO thread lift

Threads reposition descended tissue for a more immediate lift and stimulate collagen as they dissolve. See the thread lift page.

Collagen stimulators and volume support

Sculptra, Lenisna and Juvelook rebuild collagen and soft volume, which indirectly lifts by restoring support. Carefully placed filler can also support key areas.

Who is a good candidate for non-surgical lifting?

Usually a good fit

  • Early to moderate laxity
  • Reasonable skin elasticity
  • Realistic expectations of gradual, natural change
  • Willingness to plan maintenance

Talk to the doctor first

  • Advanced laxity with a lot of excess skin
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Pacemakers or metal implants (for RF)
  • Very thin faces, where some devices risk hollowing
  • Active skin infection or recent procedures in the area

How a lifting plan is designed

  1. Assess. The doctor examines your face at rest and in motion, checks skin thickness, fat distribution and volume loss, and identifies your main cause of laxity.
  2. Match. Each cause is paired with a treatment: HIFU for deeper laxity, RF for skin, stimulators or filler for volume.
  3. Sequence. Energy devices are usually performed before injectables on the same day.
  4. Maintain. A maintenance schedule is suggested based on each treatment's typical duration.

What results can you realistically expect?

Non-surgical lifting improves laxity; it does not stop aging. The most realistic way to think about it is turning the clock back a little and slowing the pace of change, rather than achieving a surgical-level transformation. A few principles help set expectations:

  • Change is gradual. Most lifting treatments work through collagen remodeling, so the best result appears two to six months after treatment, usually after you are home.
  • Starting point matters. People with early to mild laxity tend to see the most noticeable proportional improvement.
  • Combinations outperform single treatments. Because laxity has several causes, treating more than one layer usually gives a better result.
  • Maintenance is part of the plan. Results fade over months to years depending on the treatment, so regular sessions keep the improvement.
  • Daily habits count. Sun protection and not smoking help preserve the collagen your treatment builds.

Before-and-after photos taken in the same lighting are the most reliable way to judge change, because gradual improvement is hard to notice day to day. Read how long lifting results last for typical durations by device, and questions to ask at your consultation to make the most of your appointment.

If you are in your 30s and only starting to notice change, a light preventive plan once or twice a year may be all you need. If you are in your 50s or older, a combined plan with realistic goals usually gives the most satisfying result.

Risks and side effects

Energy-based lifting is generally well tolerated, with temporary redness, swelling and tenderness the most common effects. Rarer risks include burns or blisters, temporary nerve irritation and unwanted fat loss in thin faces. Thread lifts can cause bruising, asymmetry, dimpling and, rarely, infection. Injectables can cause bumps, bruising and nodules, and filler carries a small but serious risk of vascular occlusion. A licensed doctor should plan treatment and explain these risks in plain English.

Flying home? Most energy-based lifting treatments allow you to fly the next day. If you add threads or fillers, give yourself a few extra days. See our aftercare guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main cause of facial sagging?

Sagging usually results from a combination of collagen loss, weakening of the deeper SMAS and ligaments, fat pad descent and bone changes, accelerated by sun exposure and smoking.

Can skin laxity be reversed without surgery?

Early to moderate laxity can be improved without surgery. Advanced laxity with excess skin usually needs a surgical opinion for significant change.

Is HIFU or RF better for skin laxity?

HIFU targets deeper structural laxity, while RF tightens the skin itself. Many people benefit from combining both.

At what age does skin laxity start?

Collagen begins to decline from the mid-20s, and many people notice early laxity in their 30s. Genetics and sun exposure make a large difference.

How can I slow skin laxity?

Daily sunscreen, not smoking, stable weight and a consistent skincare routine help. Many people also choose preventive lifting treatments.

How long do Korean lifting results last?

It depends on the treatment, from about three to six months for Shurink to about 12–18 months for Thermage FLX.
