HA Skin Boosters vs Traditional Fillers: Key Differences Explained — Myeongdong, Seoul
HA Skin Boosters vs Traditional Fillers: Key Differences Explained — a guide for visitors in Myeongdong, Seoul.
Quick answer

HA skin boosters and traditional fillers both use hyaluronic acid, but they are made and used differently. Skin boosters use thin, lightly or non-cross-linked HA spread across the skin to improve hydration, glow and fine texture without changing shape. Fillers use thicker, more cross-linked HA placed in specific spots to add volume and contour, such as the chin, lips or smile lines. Boosters usually last one to six months; fillers about six to eighteen months. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong in Seoul, HA boosters start from ₩99,000 (2cc) and filler from ₩150,000 (1cc), excluding 10% VAT.

Shared ingredient Hyaluronic acid (HA)
Skin booster purpose Hydration, glow, fine texture
Filler purpose Volume, contour, deep folds
Gel Thin, lightly cross-linked vs thicker, cross-linked
Results last About 1–6 months vs 6–18 months
Price in Seoul Boosters from ₩99,000; filler from ₩150,000

What is the difference between HA skin boosters and fillers?

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that holds water and is found naturally in skin. On its own, it breaks down within days, so manufacturers stabilize it through cross-linking, which links HA chains into a gel. How much it is cross-linked, and where it is placed, decides whether a product behaves like a skin booster or a filler.

  • HA skin boosters use thin, non-cross-linked or lightly cross-linked HA. They are injected in many tiny amounts across the skin to attract water, so skin looks plumper, smoother and more radiant. They are not designed to change shape.
  • Traditional dermal fillers use thicker, more cross-linked HA gels. They are placed in specific locations, deeper in the tissue, to restore volume, lift folds or shape features such as the chin, lips and cheeks.

Put simply, boosters improve the quality of skin, and fillers improve the shape of the face. Learn more in our skin boosters explained guide.

How are they injected differently?

Boosters are spread evenly across a whole area, often in a grid of tiny injections in the superficial dermis, so the hydration is uniform. Fillers are placed precisely at chosen points or along lines, often deeper on bone or in the fat layer, sometimes with a cannula, to build structure where it is needed.

This is also why boosters rarely change how your face looks in profile, while fillers can noticeably alter contours, for better or worse depending on technique and judgment.

Which HA skin boosters and fillers are available at Dernia?

Skin boosters at Dernia include:

  • HA skin booster (water-glow injection), non-cross-linked HA lasting about one to three months
  • Skinvive, lightly cross-linked HA microdroplets lasting about six months
  • Profhilo, high-concentration stabilized HA, usually two sessions
  • Chanel injection (NCTF 135HA), non-cross-linked HA with vitamins and amino acids

Fillers at Dernia include Korean HA filler, Restylane and Juvéderm, plus softer gels for lips and under-eyes. See our dermal filler page and the HA filler brands used in Korea guide.

Which do you need?

A skin booster is likely if

  • Your skin looks dull, dry or dehydrated
  • You notice fine crepey lines and lost glow
  • You are happy with your face shape
  • You want a subtle, natural improvement

A filler is likely if

  • You have hollow temples, flat cheeks or a weak chin
  • Smile lines or marionette lines are deep
  • You want fuller or more defined lips
  • You want a visible change in contour

Many people benefit from both: filler for structure where volume is missing, and a booster for skin quality across the face. See facial volume loss and nasolabial folds for filler-led options.

Common myths about skin boosters and fillers

  • “Skin boosters are just weak fillers.” Not quite. They are designed for a different job. A booster spread evenly across the skin improves hydration and texture in a way a filler placed in one spot cannot.
  • “Filler always looks fake.” Overfilling looks unnatural, but small, well-placed amounts can restore lost structure subtly. In Korea, many doctors favor a conservative approach with fewer cc and natural proportions.
  • “Boosters can replace filler for hollows.” Boosters do not add meaningful volume. If a temple or cheek is truly hollow, a booster will improve the skin over it but not the hollow itself.
  • “More product means a better result.” For both, the right amount in the right place matters more than volume. A good doctor will sometimes recommend less than you expected.

Asking your doctor to explain why they chose a specific product, amount and depth is a good way to check that the plan is built around your face rather than a standard package.

What happens on treatment day

  1. English consultation. A licensed doctor examines your skin quality and facial structure and explains whether you need a booster, a filler or both, with a confirmed price.
  2. Numbing. Topical numbing cream; many fillers also contain local anesthetic.
  3. Injection. Boosters are spread across the area in many small points. Fillers are placed at chosen points, often with a cannula.
  4. Check. For fillers, the doctor checks symmetry, skin color and circulation before you leave.
  5. Aftercare. Written English instructions and a contact for questions.

Are they safe? Risks and side effects

Both are widely used and generally safe in trained hands, but the risk profile differs.

  • Common to both: redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness and small bumps for a few days.
  • Fillers: lumps, asymmetry and migration are possible. The most serious risk is vascular occlusion, where filler blocks a blood vessel, which can damage skin and, very rarely, affect vision. High-risk areas include the nose, glabella and under-eyes. HA filler can usually be dissolved with an enzyme in an emergency.
  • Skin boosters: lower structural risk because of the small volumes and superficial placement, but rare vascular events, infection and allergic-type reactions can still occur.
  • Wait if: pregnant or breastfeeding, active skin infection or cold sores, or recent dental or facial procedures.

Planning boosters or fillers around your Seoul trip

  • Book filler early in your trip so swelling settles and the doctor can review you if needed.
  • Boosters fit short stays because bumps usually settle in a day or two.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before and after to reduce bruising; see can I drink alcohol after filler.
  • Avoid your arrival day. Dernia is in Myeongdong, near Myeongdong Station (Line 4) and Euljiro 1-ga Station (Line 2).
  • Book ahead through our consultation form.

Flying after filler? Most people can fly the next day, but swelling may be more noticeable on long flights. Seek urgent help for severe pain, skin color changes or vision problems. See flying after Botox, fillers and boosters.

Can fillers and boosters be dissolved?

Hyaluronic acid products can usually be dissolved with an enzyme if there is a problem.
