HIFU is the backbone of non-surgical lifting in Korea. This guide explains how focused ultrasound firms the skin, how the main devices differ, and how international visitors can plan HIFU during a stay in Seoul.
HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) concentrates ultrasound energy into tiny points of heat beneath the skin, including the SMAS layer that a surgical facelift tightens. The heat contracts collagen and triggers new collagen over two to three months, firming the jawline, cheeks, brows and under-chin without incisions. In Seoul, the most common HIFU options are Ulthera Prime and Shurink Universe. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, Shurink Universe starts from ₩149,000 for 300 shots and Ulthera Prime from ₩390,000 for 100 lines (KRW, excluding 10% VAT).
Prices are in Korean won, exclude 10% VAT and are confirmed by a doctor at consultation.
What is HIFU lifting?
HIFU stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. In aesthetic medicine, it refers to devices that focus ultrasound energy to small points beneath the skin surface. Where the beams converge, the tissue heats quickly to a temperature that causes collagen to contract, while the skin above remains intact.
Korea has one of the most developed HIFU markets in the world. Clinics in Seoul use both imported and Korean-made devices, and HIFU is often the first lifting treatment people try. Because it reaches the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) — the fibrous layer that supports the face — HIFU can produce a lift that skin-level treatments cannot.
How does focused ultrasound improve skin firmness?
HIFU works in two stages.
- Thermal coagulation points. Each shot or line creates a row of tiny heated points at a set depth. The tissue around each point is briefly heated, causing existing collagen fibers to contract.
- Wound-healing response. The body treats each point as a micro-injury and begins producing new collagen and elastin. This remodeling continues for two to three months.
- Layered tightening. By using different depths, the doctor can tighten the SMAS for lift, the deep dermis for firmness and the superficial dermis for texture in a single session.
Typical depths used in Korean clinics are around 4.5 mm for the SMAS, 3.0 mm for the deep dermis and 1.5–2.0 mm for more superficial skin. Your doctor chooses depths based on your skin and fat thickness, which is why a consultation matters.
HIFU vs RF: which lifting technology do you need?
HIFU is often compared with radiofrequency (RF) devices such as Thermage FLX and Oligio X. They work differently and are frequently combined.
| Feature | HIFU (ultrasound) | RF (radiofrequency) |
|---|---|---|
| How heat is created | Focused points of ultrasound | Broad, even electrical heating |
| Main depth | SMAS and deep dermis | Dermis |
| Best for | Lift: jawline, brows, under-chin | Tightening and texture: crepey skin, eyelids |
| Examples at Dernia | Ulthera Prime, Shurink Universe | Thermage FLX, Oligio X, Volnewmer |
| Downtime | None to mild swelling | None to minimal |

Ulthera Prime vs Shurink Universe: the main Korean HIFU options
Ulthera Prime
Ulthera Prime is the latest generation of Ultherapy. Its key feature is real-time ultrasound imaging, which lets the doctor see tissue layers before delivering energy. It is generally chosen for a stronger lift that lasts around a year and is priced by lines. See the Ulthera Prime treatment page.
Shurink Universe
Shurink Universe is a Korean HIFU device by Classys. It is quick, comfortable relative to older HIFU and more affordable, so people often repeat it every few months. It is priced by shots. See the Shurink Universe treatment page.
Many visitors choose Ulthera for an annual lift and Shurink for maintenance between sessions. Compare them directly in Ulthera Prime vs Shurink Universe.
Who is a good candidate for HIFU lifting?
Usually a good fit
- Adults with mild to moderate laxity, often from the late 20s or 30s
- A softening jawline, early jowls or lowered brows
- Under-chin looseness or early neck laxity
- People who want a lift without surgery or visible downtime
Talk to the doctor first
- Very thin faces with little fat, where hollowing is a risk
- Heavy sagging or significant excess skin
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Active acne, infection or open wounds in the area
- Recent filler or threads in the treatment zone

What happens on HIFU treatment day
A HIFU appointment in Seoul usually takes one to two hours, including consultation and numbing. After an English consultation in which the doctor confirms the device, depths and shot or line count, numbing cream is applied for about 30 minutes. The face is then mapped, gel is applied and the doctor delivers energy zone by zone. You feel short, deep pulses of heat, strongest over bone. Afterward, the gel is removed and skin is soothed, and most people go straight back to their plans.
HIFU results timeline
- Day 0: mild redness; some people see a subtle immediate lift.
- First week: tenderness along the jaw, occasional mild swelling or tingling.
- Weeks 4–8: gradual firming as collagen remodeling builds.
- Months 2–3: peak result for most people.
- After that: Shurink typically fades over three to six months; Ulthera often lasts around a year.
Your result depends on age, skin quality, the depth and number of shots or lines, and lifestyle factors such as sun exposure and smoking. See how long Korean lifting results last.
Is HIFU safe? Risks and side effects
HIFU has a long track record when performed by trained medical staff. Common, temporary effects include redness, swelling, tenderness and a tingling sensation for a few days. Less common effects include bruising, welts or faint lines along treatment rows, and temporary numbness.
Rare but important risks include temporary nerve irritation that can affect facial movement for a period of weeks, and unwanted fat loss that makes a slim face look hollow if energy is placed too deep or used too aggressively. Burns are rare with proper technique. These risks are why HIFU should be planned by a licensed doctor who maps the face, avoids nerve zones and chooses depths to suit your anatomy.
Be cautious of very low-priced offers that do not name the device, the shot or line count, or who will perform the treatment. Our guide on how to choose a skin clinic in Seoul explains what to check.

Planning HIFU around your Seoul trip
- Book ahead. Share your dates and concerns through our consultation form so the doctor can suggest a plan before you arrive.
- Avoid your arrival day. Rest after your flight and book treatment from day two.
- Getting here. Dernia is in Myeongdong, close to Myeongdong Station (Line 4) and Euljiro 1-ga Station (Line 2).
- Allow time before flying. A day between treatment and departure lets any swelling settle.
- Combine thoughtfully. HIFU is often paired with RF tightening or skin boosters; the doctor plans order and spacing.
Flying home? HIFU involves no injections or open wounds, so most people can fly the next day. If you add Botox or fillers, check our aftercare guide for spacing advice.
Frequently asked questions
Is HIFU the same as Ulthera?
Ulthera is one brand of focused ultrasound, distinguished by real-time imaging. HIFU is the broader category, which also includes Korean devices such as Shurink Universe.
Does HIFU hurt?
It can feel like deep heat or prickling, especially over the jawline and brow bone. Numbing cream and adjusting energy help most people tolerate it well.
How long does HIFU last?
It depends on the device. Shurink results usually last about three to six months, while Ulthera often lasts around a year.
Can HIFU make my face look thinner or hollow?
Aggressive treatment on a slim face can reduce fat and cause hollowing. A doctor-planned map and appropriate depths reduce this risk.
At what age should I start HIFU?
Many people start in their late 20s or 30s when early laxity appears. The right time depends on your skin rather than a specific age.
Can I combine HIFU and Thermage?
Yes. HIFU lifts deeper layers while Thermage tightens the skin, so they are often combined. Your doctor will plan energy and sequence.
