What is a Hydrafacial?

A Hydrafacial is a medical-grade facial performed with a device that combines water-based cleansing, gentle exfoliation, vacuum extraction and serum infusion in a single handpiece. Instead of manual squeezing or abrasive scrubs, a spiral tip loosens debris while gentle suction draws it out of the pores, and serums are delivered to the skin at the same time.

In Korea, Hydrafacial and its close relative, the Aqua Peel, are among the most common clinic facials. They are often booked on their own for a quick refresh, or used before or after other treatments such as lasers and skin boosters. Learn more on our Hydrafacial and Aqua Peel page.

Benefits of a Korean Hydrafacial

  • Clearer pores. Blackheads and congestion are loosened and removed without harsh squeezing.
  • Instant glow. Skin looks brighter and smoother as soon as you leave.
  • Deep hydration. Serums are applied to freshly cleansed skin, leaving it plump and comfortable.
  • No downtime. You can wear makeup and carry on sightseeing straight away.
  • Gentle on most skin types. Suitable for many people with oily, combination or dull skin.
  • A good base for other treatments. Clean, hydrated skin is a helpful starting point for lasers or boosters later in the trip.

Hydrafacial steps: what happens during treatment

  1. Skin check. Your skin type and concerns are reviewed, and the doctor confirms the facial is appropriate.
  2. Cleanse and exfoliate. A water-based solution and spiral tip remove surface dead cells and oil.
  3. Gentle acid step. A mild solution loosens debris in the pores to make extraction easier.
  4. Vacuum extraction. Gentle suction lifts out blackheads and congestion; most people find it comfortable.
  5. Hydrate and infuse. Hydrating and antioxidant serums are applied; a targeted booster serum can be added.
  6. Finish. Soothing care and sunscreen complete the session. Optional LDM ultrasound can be added for extra calming.

The whole session usually takes 30–45 minutes.

Hydrafacial vs Aqua Peel: is there a difference?

Both are water-based medical facials that cleanse, exfoliate, extract and hydrate. The name Hydrafacial refers to a specific branded system, while Aqua Peel is a widely used term in Korea for similar hydro-dermabrasion treatments. In practice, both give clean, hydrated, brighter skin with no downtime. At Dernia, the Aqua Peel is our standard option, and the Hydrafacial with booster adds a targeted serum. Why Hydrafacials are so popular in Korea

Korean skin care culture places a strong emphasis on skin quality: clear, hydrated, even skin often described as glass skin. Regular clinic facials fit naturally into that approach. Rather than waiting until a problem appears, many people in Seoul book a facial every few weeks to keep pores clear and skin hydrated, in the same way they might book a haircut.

For visitors, this means clinics are well practiced at quick, efficient facials that fit around a busy itinerary. It also means a Hydrafacial is often the first step in a broader plan. Clean, hydrated skin can make it easier for a doctor to assess your skin accurately, and some people find that lasers or boosters later in the week feel more comfortable on well-prepared skin.

Choosing add-ons

The basic facial can be tailored with add-ons. A booster serum targets specific concerns such as dullness or dehydration, while LDM ultrasound adds a calming step that suits sensitive or redness-prone skin. If you want longer-lasting hydration than a facial can provide, ask your doctor about injectable skin boosters, which work deeper in the skin and last weeks to months rather than days. Our guide to skin boosters explained compares the main types.

Who is a Hydrafacial good for?

Usually a good fit

  • Dull, congested or dehydrated skin
  • Blackheads and oily T-zones
  • Skin that feels tired after a long flight
  • Anyone wanting a glow before an event or photos
  • First-time clinic visitors

Talk to the doctor first

  • Active, inflamed acne or rosacea flares
  • Sunburn or broken skin
  • Recent laser, peel or isotretinoin use
  • Known allergies to skincare ingredients

Hydrafacial results: what to expect and when

When What you may notice
Immediately Brighter, smoother, more hydrated skin; pores look clearer
Days 1–3 Makeup sits more smoothly; skin feels soft
Week 1–2 Glow gradually fades as skin returns to its usual cycle
With regular sessions Fewer clogged pores and more consistent texture

A Hydrafacial is a maintenance and refresh treatment. It does not change deep wrinkles, scars or pigment; for those, your doctor may suggest lasers, boosters or other options. See dull skin and dehydrated skin.

Is a Hydrafacial safe? Side effects

Hydrafacial and Aqua Peel are among the gentlest clinic treatments. Some people have mild, temporary redness or a tingling sensation, especially with the acid step, which usually settles within an hour. Rarely, sensitive skin may react to a serum ingredient. Breakouts are uncommon, but some people notice a few spots in the following days as congestion surfaces. Tell your doctor about any recent treatments or skin conditions beforehand.

Aftercare after a Hydrafacial

  • You can usually wear makeup the same day, but many people enjoy going bare-faced to show off the glow.
  • Avoid strong exfoliating products and retinoids for a day or two.
  • Use sunscreen, as freshly exfoliated skin is more sensitive to the sun.
  • Drink water and keep moisturizing to prolong the hydrated look.

Just landed? A Hydrafacial is a good way to refresh skin after a long flight, though we still suggest booking it for your second day rather than the arrival day. See our no-downtime treatments guide.

How often should you book a Hydrafacial?

For maintenance, many people book a session every two to four weeks, which matches the natural cycle of skin renewal. If you are in Seoul for just a few days, a single session timed for the day before an important event or the day before your flight home is often the most rewarding. Longer stays allow a second session, and a 5-session course suits people who live in Seoul or visit regularly.
