Korean Salmon DNA Skin Treatments: What Are Polynucleotides? — a guide for visitors in Myeongdong, Seoul.
Quick answer

Korean salmon DNA skin treatments are polynucleotide (PN) injections, such as Rejuran Healer, that use purified DNA fragments derived from salmon. Injected into the skin, PN is thought to support repair, thickness and elasticity, and to calm sensitive skin. Most people plan three sessions 2–4 weeks apart, with small bumps for 1–3 days. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong in Seoul, Rejuran Healer starts from ₩259,000 for 2cc covering the full face, and Rejuran Eye from ₩189,000 for 1cc (KRW, excluding 10% VAT).

Treatment type Polynucleotide (PN) skin booster
Source Purified DNA fragments from salmon
Downtime Small bumps for 1–3 days
Sessions Usually 3, 2–4 weeks apart
Maintenance About every 6 months
Price in Seoul From ₩259,000 (Rejuran Healer, 2cc)

What are polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides (PN) are chains of nucleotides, the building blocks of DNA. In aesthetic medicine, they are purified DNA fragments extracted, in most products, from salmon reproductive cells. The material is highly purified so that proteins and other components that could trigger reactions are removed, leaving the DNA fragments themselves.

That is why these injections are popularly called salmon DNA treatments. The name sounds unusual, but the idea is straightforward: PN is used as a supportive material for the skin, not as a filler. It does not change the shape of the face. Read is Rejuran made from salmon? for a short answer.

How do salmon DNA treatments work?

Polynucleotides are thought to support the skin's natural repair processes. The proposed mechanisms include providing building blocks that cells can use, encouraging the activity of fibroblasts (the cells that produce collagen) and helping to calm inflammation. PN also holds water, which contributes to hydration.

It is fair to say that the science is still developing. Laboratory and clinical research has been encouraging, especially for wound healing and skin quality, but results in everyday aesthetic use vary between individuals. For that reason, Dernia's doctors describe PN boosters as treatments that support skin quality gradually, not as quick fixes. For an evidence-focused overview, see our guide to skin boosters.

What is Rejuran and why is it so popular in Korea?

Rejuran is the best-known PN brand, made in Korea by Pharma Research. It became widely used in Korean clinics because it suits a common local goal: healthy, resilient, even skin rather than dramatic change. Several versions exist for different purposes:

Product Typical use Available at Dernia
Rejuran Healer Full-face skin quality, sensitivity, elasticity Yes, from ₩259,000 (2cc)
Rejuran Eye (Rejuran I) Thin, crepey under-eye skin Yes, from ₩189,000 (1cc)
Rejuran S Placed under individual depressed scars Not currently offered

Dernia does not currently offer Rejuran S or standalone PDRN injections. If your main concern is acne scars, your doctor can explain alternatives such as RF microneedling or fractional laser. Learn more on our Rejuran Healer and Rejuran Eye pages.

What are the benefits of polynucleotide boosters?

  • Improved skin quality. Skin can look healthier, more even and more resilient over a series.
  • Better elasticity and thickness. Thin or fragile skin may feel firmer.
  • Calmer sensitive skin. Many people choose PN for redness-prone or reactive skin.
  • Support after other treatments. PN is sometimes combined with laser plans to support recovery.
  • Natural-looking change. No volume is added, so the result looks like better skin rather than a treatment.

PN boosters are not designed to lift sagging skin, fill hollows or remove pigment. For those concerns, other treatments are more suitable.

PN boosters compared with other skin boosters

Hyaluronic acid boosters mainly add hydration and glow, with results that appear quickly and fade within a few months. Collagen stimulators such as Juvelook prompt the skin to build new collagen over two to three months. PN boosters sit in between: they aim to support repair and resilience, and they are often chosen for thin or reactive skin where a gentle, supportive approach makes sense. Many Korean treatment plans combine more than one type over time. Compare two popular choices in Rejuran Healer vs Juvelook.

Who is a good candidate?

Usually a good fit

  • Thin, fragile, sensitive or easily irritated skin
  • Early loss of elasticity and fine texture changes
  • People wanting gradual, natural improvement
  • Those able to plan a series of sessions

Talk to the doctor first

  • Fish or salmon allergy
  • Active skin infection or acne flare in the area
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Need for an instant result within days

What happens on treatment day

  1. English consultation. A licensed doctor checks your skin, asks about allergies and agrees the volume and price.
  2. Numbing. Numbing cream is applied for about 30 minutes, as PN injections can sting more than HA boosters.
  3. Injection. Many small injections are placed across the face, by hand or with a device.
  4. Soothing. A calming mask or cooling helps settle redness and bumps.

The visit takes about 30–45 minutes for the treatment itself. Read does Rejuran hurt? for tips on comfort.

Results, recovery and how long they last

Small raised bumps at injection points are the most visible sign and usually settle within 1–3 days. Mild redness and occasional pinpoint bruising are also common. Most people can return to sightseeing the same day, though some prefer to stay low-key that evening.

Results build gradually. Many people notice skin looking smoother and healthier from about two to four weeks after the first session, with improvement continuing across a series of three. Maintenance every six months or so is common. See Rejuran Healer results and when will I see Rejuran results?

For the first day or two, avoid saunas, hot baths, intense exercise and alcohol, wait until the next day for makeup, and pause retinol or exfoliating acids for a few days.

Is it safe? Risks and side effects

Polynucleotide boosters have been used widely in Korea and are generally well tolerated. Common effects include bumps, redness, tenderness, swelling and bruising, which are usually temporary. Less common effects include longer-lasting bumps or a mild acne flare. Infection and allergic reactions are rare.

Because the material is salmon-derived, anyone with a fish allergy must tell the doctor first. As with any injection, a licensed doctor should confirm suitability, and you should contact the clinic if you notice increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth or fever.
