LDM is one of the most common add-ons in Korean skin clinics. Here is what it actually does, what the evidence supports, and where its limits are.
LDM (Local Dynamic Micro-massage), often called LDM Water Drop Lifting in Korea, is a gentle ultrasound treatment that alternates between two frequencies as the handpiece glides over the skin. Its main, well-recognized role is to soothe, hydrate and calm the skin, which is why it is so often added after lasers, peels or microneedling. Despite the name, any lifting effect is subtle and temporary. There is no downtime. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong in Seoul, LDM starts from ₩59,000 per session (KRW, excluding 10% VAT).
Prices are in Korean won, exclude 10% VAT and are confirmed by a doctor at consultation.
What is LDM?
LDM stands for Local Dynamic Micro-massage. It is an ultrasound technology that rapidly alternates between two different frequencies while the handpiece glides over the skin with a water-based gel. The changing frequencies create a gentle micro-massage effect in the tissue. In Korea, the treatment is widely known as LDM Water Drop Lifting, a marketing name that refers to the plump, dewy look it can give.
LDM uses much lower energy than lifting ultrasound devices such as Ulthera or Shurink. It does not create focused heat points in deep layers, which is why it is comfortable and has no downtime. See our LDM Water Drop page for details.
LDM vs HIFU: an important difference
| LDM | HIFU (e.g. Ulthera, Shurink) | |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | Low, unfocused, alternating frequencies | High, focused into tiny heat points |
| Target | Skin comfort, hydration and calm | Deep SMAS and dermis for lifting |
| Sensation | Warm, gentle, relaxing | Deep heat and twinges |
| Downtime | None | None to mild tenderness |
| Lifting effect | Subtle and temporary | Meaningful, builds over months |

Benefits of an LDM ultrasound facial
- Calms redness and sensitivity. Many people notice less redness and a more settled feel after a session.
- Supports recovery after procedures. LDM is often added after lasers, microneedling or peels to make the skin feel more comfortable.
- Improves hydration and plumpness. Skin often looks dewier straight after treatment.
- Comfortable and relaxing. Most people find it pleasant.
- No downtime. You can wear makeup and continue your day.
What does the evidence say about LDM?
LDM has been studied in laboratory and small clinical settings, with research interest in how dual-frequency ultrasound may influence inflammation, hydration and skin barrier function. These findings are encouraging, but the research base is smaller than for established treatments such as lasers, HIFU or injectables, and many studies are limited in size or design.
In practice, doctors use LDM mainly for what it is consistently observed to do well: soothe, calm and hydrate. Claims of significant lifting, wrinkle reduction or long-term structural change should be treated with caution. The honest summary is that LDM is a useful supportive treatment, not a substitute for lifting devices or collagen stimulators. We prefer to describe it in those terms so you can decide whether it is worth adding.
How LDM is used in Korean clinics
In Korea, LDM is rarely the headline treatment. It is most often used in one of three ways. First, as an add-on straight after a stronger treatment, such as laser toning, pico fractional, Potenza or an acne program, where it helps the skin feel calmer and more comfortable. Second, as a stand-alone soothing facial for sensitive or redness-prone skin, sometimes booked as a course. Third, as part of pre-event care, when someone wants their skin to look hydrated and settled without any risk of downtime.
This pattern reflects what LDM does best. It is a supportive tool that improves comfort and hydration, and it pairs naturally with treatments that do the heavier work of remodeling collagen or clearing pigment. If you are visiting Seoul for a short time and want a treatment with no risk at all to your plans, LDM is one of the safest choices, but it is worth having realistic expectations about what it can change.
LDM for sensitive skin and redness
Many people with sensitive skin find that lasers and active skincare leave them feeling irritated. LDM can be a gentle way to calm the skin between other treatments. For persistent redness caused by visible blood vessels, however, a vascular laser such as Excel V is usually more effective, and LDM can be added afterward for comfort. Our guide to combining treatments in one visit explains how doctors sequence these options.
Who is LDM good for?
Usually a good fit
- Sensitive, redness-prone or reactive skin
- Dehydrated skin, especially after a flight
- Anyone having lasers, microneedling or peels
- People who want a relaxing, no-downtime facial
Talk to the doctor first
- Pacemakers or implanted electronic devices
- Pregnancy
- Active skin infection or open wounds
- Expectation of significant lifting
What happens during an LDM session
- Skin check. Your skin and goals are reviewed by the doctor.
- Cleansing. Makeup is removed, or LDM follows straight after another treatment.
- Gel application. A water-based gel helps the handpiece glide and transmit ultrasound.
- Treatment. The handpiece moves slowly over the face for about 15–20 minutes. You may feel gentle warmth.
- Finish. An ampoule mask can be added, followed by moisturizer and sunscreen.
Results: what to expect
| When | What many people notice |
|---|---|
| Straight after | Calmer, dewier, more comfortable skin |
| Next day or two | Skin still feels hydrated and settled |
| After a course | More consistent calm and comfort for sensitive skin |
Effects are short-lived on their own, which is why people with sensitive skin often choose a course and why LDM is commonly paired with other treatments.
Is LDM safe?
LDM is low-energy and widely regarded as one of the gentlest clinic treatments. Side effects are uncommon and usually limited to mild warmth or transient pinkness. As with other ultrasound devices, it is not used over implanted electronic devices, and your doctor will check for any reason to avoid it. Because the energy is so low, LDM is often one of the few treatments that can be used on the same day as more intensive procedures, and it is generally considered suitable for most skin types and tones. If you notice unusual stinging, swelling or a rash after any facial treatment, contact the clinic so the team can check whether a product in the gel or mask was the cause.
Adding LDM to another treatment? Many of our laser and facial options include an LDM version. The combined price is shown on each treatment's price page, for example pico toning with LDM.
