Removing small moles and skin tags is quick in Seoul, but healing and scar prevention depend on what you do afterward. Here is how the process works and how to protect your result.
In Korea, small benign moles, skin tags and seborrheic keratoses are usually removed with a precise CO2 laser that vaporizes the lesion layer by layer. A doctor first checks that each lesion looks benign; anything suspicious should be assessed rather than lasered. Healing takes about 5–10 days under a small hydrocolloid patch, and careful patch use and sun protection help prevent scars and dark marks. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong in Seoul, mole removal starts from ₩15,000 per lesion under 2 mm, with up to 10 small lesions for ₩120,000 (KRW, excluding 10% VAT).
Prices are in Korean won, exclude 10% VAT and are confirmed by a doctor at consultation.
What can be removed: moles, skin tags and more
Many small skin growths are harmless but bothersome, either because of how they look or because they catch on clothing or jewelry. Common ones include:
- Flat or raised moles (nevi): small brown or skin-colored spots.
- Skin tags: soft, small flaps of skin, often on the neck, eyelids or underarms.
- Seborrheic keratoses: raised, waxy or "stuck-on" brown spots that become more common with age.
- Other small benign bumps, as assessed by the doctor.
See our moles and skin tags page for an overview.
When a mole should be checked, not removed
Laser removal vaporizes tissue, which means nothing is left to examine under a microscope. That is why a doctor must look at every lesion before treatment. A mole should be assessed further rather than lasered if it shows warning signs often summarized as ABCDE:
- A symmetry: one half does not match the other.
- B order: irregular, ragged or blurred edges.
- C olor: several shades, or black, blue, red or white areas.
- D iameter: larger than about 6 mm, though melanomas can be smaller.
- E volving: changing in size, shape, color, or starting to itch or bleed.
If anything looks unusual, the doctor will recommend that it be assessed or biopsied, which may be best arranged with a dermatologist at home where follow-up is easy. Lesions larger than 6 mm are quoted only after examination.
Mole removal methods used in Korea
| Method | How it works | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| CO2 laser | Vaporizes the lesion layer by layer with precise control | Small benign moles, skin tags, seborrheic keratoses | Fast, precise; no tissue for lab testing |
| Surgical excision | Cut out with stitches | Larger or suspicious lesions needing pathology | Leaves a linear scar; allows biopsy |
| Shave removal | Lesion shaved flush with skin | Some raised lesions | May allow pathology |
At Dernia, small benign lesions are removed with CO2 laser. Lesions that need surgical excision or pathology are referred for appropriate care. See mole and skin tag removal.
Who is a good candidate for laser mole removal?
Usually a good fit
- Small moles that have been stable for a long time
- Skin tags on the neck, eyelids or underarms
- Seborrheic keratoses
- People who can keep patches on and avoid sun for a few weeks
Talk to the doctor first
- Any mole that is changing, bleeding or irregular
- Personal or family history of melanoma
- Keloid or raised-scar tendency
- Blood-thinning medication or poor wound healing
- Pregnancy
What happens on treatment day
- Doctor examination. Each lesion is checked and the plan and price are confirmed.
- Numbing. Numbing cream or a small local anesthetic injection is used.
- Laser removal. The CO2 laser removes the lesion layer by layer. You may smell a faint burning odor; it is normal.
- Patch application. A hydrocolloid healing patch is placed over each site.
- Aftercare briefing. You receive written instructions and spare patches.
Healing timeline after mole removal
| When | What is typical |
|---|---|
| Day 0–1 | Small, shallow wound under a patch; mild stinging |
| Days 2–7 | Wound closes under the patch; change patches as instructed |
| Days 5–10 | New pink skin forms; patches may no longer be needed |
| Weeks 2–8 | Pinkness fades gradually; sun protection is critical |
| Months 2–6 | Skin color settles; final appearance |
Larger or deeper lesions take longer. Deeper moles occasionally regrow pigment and may need a second session.
Scar prevention: how to protect your result
Most small laser sites heal with minimal marks, but how you care for them matters a great deal.
- Keep the wound moist and covered. Hydrocolloid patches create a moist healing environment that reduces scabbing and scarring.
- Do not pick. Let the skin heal on its own; picking increases the risk of depressed scars and dark marks.
- Protect from the sun. New skin is very prone to darkening. Keep it covered and use sunscreen once healed, for at least two to three months.
- Avoid heat and soaking. Skip saunas, swimming pools and long hot baths until the wound has closed.
- Follow-up care. If pinkness or darkening persists, your doctor can advise on options such as gentle laser toning later.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, temporary darkening at the site, is the most common cosmetic issue, especially in medium to darker skin. Depressed or raised scars are less common but possible, particularly with deeper lesions or a keloid tendency.
Flying home? Flying is fine with patches on. Pack spare patches and sunscreen in your carry-on, and plan removal at least a few days before you leave so you can see the doctor if anything concerns you. See our aftercare guide.
Why Korean clinics favor CO2 laser for small lesions
CO2 laser removal has become the standard approach for small benign lesions in Korean dermatology clinics for practical reasons. The laser allows the doctor to remove tissue in very thin layers and stop as soon as the pigment or growth is gone, which helps keep the wound as shallow as possible. Bleeding is minimal because the laser seals small vessels as it works. Several lesions can be treated in one short visit, and stitches are not needed.
The trade-off is depth judgment. If too little is removed, some pigment may return; if too much is removed, the risk of a depressed scar rises. Experienced doctors aim for a balance, sometimes deliberately removing a deeper mole in two stages to protect the surface. This is also why the healing patch matters so much: a moist, protected wound heals more evenly.
Skin tags around the eyes and neck
Skin tags on the eyelids and neck are among the most common requests. They are usually quick to remove and heal well. Around the eyes, protective shields are used and the doctor works carefully near the lash line. Neck sites can rub against collars, so wearing soft, open-necked clothing for the first few days helps the patches stay in place.
Will moles come back?
Most small skin tags and seborrheic keratoses do not return once removed, although new ones can appear elsewhere over time. Deeper moles occasionally show a little returning pigment after several months, which can usually be treated with a short second session.

Frequently asked questions
Does laser mole removal leave a scar?
Small laser sites often heal with minimal marks, but temporary pinkness or darkening is common. Using patches, not picking and strict sun protection lower the risk of lasting scars.
How long does it take to heal after mole removal?
Most small sites close in about 5–10 days under a hydrocolloid patch, with pinkness fading over several weeks.
Can any mole be removed with laser?
No. Only moles that look benign should be lasered. Changing, irregular or suspicious moles should be assessed and may need a biopsy.
Does mole removal hurt?
The area is numbed first, so most people feel only mild stinging or warmth during treatment.
Can a mole come back after laser removal?
Deeper moles occasionally regrow some pigment and may need a second session.
