Hongdae and Myeongdong are both favorite bases for visitors to Seoul. Here is how the two areas compare when you want a skin treatment as part of your trip.
Both Myeongdong and Hongdae have skin clinics that see international visitors, so the better area is usually the one closer to your hotel and itinerary. Myeongdong sits in central Seoul on Line 4 and Line 2, close to many tourist hotels, Seoul Station and the palaces, which makes short appointments easy to fit between sightseeing. Hongdae suits travelers staying in the west of the city near the airport railroad. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, a doctor-led clinic with English consultations, wrinkle Botox starts from ₩39,000 per area and pico toning from ₩69,000 per session (excluding 10% VAT).
Prices are in Korean won, exclude 10% VAT and are confirmed by a doctor at consultation. Travel times are approximate.
Myeongdong vs Hongdae: the short answer
There is no single best neighborhood for skin clinics in Seoul. What matters far more is the clinic itself: whether a licensed doctor examines you, whether the plan and price are explained clearly in English, and whether you get proper aftercare. Once you have that, the area is mostly a question of convenience.
Myeongdong is the more central choice for most first-time visitors. It sits in Jung-gu, a short walk from many tourist hotels, Namsan, Euljiro and the palace district, and it is two subway stops from Seoul Station. Hongdae, around Hongik University in Mapo-gu, is a lively student and nightlife area in the west of Seoul, popular with travelers who like cafes, street performance and late evenings.
How do Myeongdong and Hongdae compare for visitors?
| Factor | Myeongdong | Hongdae |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Central Seoul (Jung-gu) | West Seoul (Mapo-gu) |
| Subway | Myeongdong Station (Line 4), Euljiro 1-ga (Line 2) | Hongik University Station (Line 2, AREX, Gyeongui-Jungang) |
| From Incheon Airport | AREX to Seoul Station, then two stops on Line 4, or airport bus | AREX direct to Hongik University Station |
| Atmosphere | Shopping streets, hotels, K-beauty stores, quieter after evening | Youthful, busy into the night, indie shops and cafes |
| Nearby sights | Namsan Tower, palaces, Cheonggyecheon, Insadong | Yeonnam-dong, Mangwon, Han River parks |
| Fits a treatment day | Easy to slot between central sightseeing | Good if your hotel and plans are in the west |
Both areas are safe, walkable and well connected. If you plan to spend most of your days in central Seoul, Myeongdong usually means less time on the subway on treatment day. If you are staying near Hongdae, it may be just as easy to travel 25–35 minutes to a central clinic as to look for one nearby.
Which area has better English consultations?
Both neighborhoods see many international visitors, and you will find English signs, menus and staff in each. For skin treatments, though, English at the front desk is not the same as an English medical consultation. What you want is the chance to talk directly with the doctor about your concerns, medical history and the risks of a treatment, and to receive written aftercare you can follow once you are home.
At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, consultations, plans and aftercare are provided in English. See our international patients page for how a visit works.
Do treatment options differ between Myeongdong and Hongdae?
Not in any systematic way. Popular Korean treatments such as Botox, skin boosters, pico toning and ultrasound or RF lifting are offered across Seoul. The differences are clinic by clinic: which devices they own, whether they use genuine tips and products, and how much time the doctor spends with you.
Visitors to either area most often ask about:
- No-downtime glow treatments such as pico toning, laser toning and Hydrafacial.
- Skin boosters such as Rejuran Healer, Juvelook and hyaluronic acid boosters.
- Injectables such as wrinkle Botox, jaw Botox and dermal filler.
- Lifting with ultrasound (Ulthera, Shurink) or radiofrequency (Thermage, Oligio).

What does a treatment day in Myeongdong look like?
A typical visit to a Myeongdong skin clinic fits comfortably into half a day, which is one reason the area works well for travelers who want to keep sightseeing.
- Arrive and register. Bring your passport and a list of any medicines, supplements or recent treatments.
- Doctor consultation. The doctor examines your skin, asks about your goals and flight date, and explains the options, risks and price before anything starts.
- Preparation. Cleansing and, for injections or lasers, topical numbing cream for around 20–40 minutes.
- Treatment. Many popular treatments take 10–60 minutes.
- Aftercare. You leave with written instructions in English and a way to contact the clinic.
Afterward you can walk to Myeongdong's shopping streets, Namsan or the palaces. If you want ideas for the rest of the day, see our Myeongdong area guide for patients. If you are staying in Hongdae, it is easy to head back west for the evening once any redness has settled.
Is it safe? What to know before any treatment
Most popular Korean skin treatments are low-risk when performed by trained medical staff, but none are risk-free. Common, temporary effects include redness, swelling, small bruises from injections and mild tenderness. Rarer risks depend on the treatment and include burns or pigment changes after lasers and, with fillers, vascular complications. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, active skin infection, recent isotretinoin use and some medical conditions may mean waiting. A licensed doctor should confirm that a treatment suits you, whichever area you choose.
Planning your treatment around a Seoul trip
- Book ahead. Send your dates and concerns through our consultation form so a realistic plan can be suggested before you arrive.
- Avoid your arrival day. Delays at the airport are common; day two or three is usually calmer.
- Getting to Dernia. We are in Myeongdong near Myeongdong Station (Line 4) and Euljiro 1-ga Station (Line 2). From Hongdae, take Line 2 east toward City Hall and Euljiro. See location and directions.
- Leave a buffer before flying. Injections and lasers are best done a few days before departure so any swelling settles and you can return if needed.
Flying home soon? Most no-downtime treatments are fine a day or two before a flight, but plan injectables and stronger lasers earlier in your stay. Our aftercare guide explains what to avoid on the plane and in the days after.
