Quick answer

Pico lasers deliver very short pulses that break up pigment with less heat than older lasers, and they are offered in both Sinsa and Myeongdong. Your result depends on correctly identifying your pigment type, choosing the right laser and settings, and completing enough sessions, not on the neighborhood. Melasma usually needs a gentle series, while freckles and sun spots may respond faster. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, pico toning starts from ₩69,000 per session, with 5 sessions for ₩299,000 and 10 for ₩549,000; pico fractional starts from ₩149,000 (excluding 10% VAT).

Treatment type Picosecond laser
Session time 15–20 minutes (toning)
Downtime Little or none for toning
Sessions Melasma: often 5–10; spots: fewer
Interval Usually 1–2 weeks for toning
Dernia price From ₩69,000 (pico toning)

What is a pico laser?

A pico laser fires pulses lasting picoseconds, trillionths of a second. These ultra-short pulses shatter pigment particles mainly through a pressure effect rather than heat, which can mean less risk of heat-related irritation than older nanosecond lasers when settings are chosen carefully. Clinics in Korea use pico lasers in several ways:

  • Pico toning: low-energy, full-face passes for melasma, dullness and uneven tone, usually as a series. See pico toning.
  • Spot treatment: higher-energy shots on individual freckles or sun spots, which darken and flake over about a week.
  • Pico fractional: a special lens creates micro-injuries in the skin for texture, pores and shallow scars.

Sinsa vs Myeongdong: does the area matter for pigmentation?

Sinsa-dong, home to Garosu-gil in Gangnam-gu, has many aesthetic clinics. Myeongdong, in central Seoul, is the main tourist and hotel district. Both offer pico lasers, and the devices themselves do not differ by district. What matters for pigmentation is:

  • Diagnosis. Melasma, freckles, sun spots, post-inflammatory marks and Hori's nevus each need a different approach. Read pigmentation types explained.
  • Settings. Melasma can worsen with aggressive treatment, so conservative energy and spacing matter.
  • A realistic series. Most pigment, especially melasma, needs repeated sessions and daily sun protection.
  • Aftercare. Sunscreen and gentle skincare are as important as the laser.
Factor Myeongdong Sinsa
Subway Myeongdong (Line 4), Euljiro 1-ga (Line 2) Sinsa (Line 3, Sinbundang)
Nearby Namsan, palaces, K-beauty stores, hotels Garosu-gil boutiques and cafes
Repeat sessions Easy if you stay in central Seoul Easy if you stay in Gangnam

Because pico toning usually needs several sessions one to two weeks apart, being able to return easily matters more than for one-off treatments. A clinic near your hotel turns each follow-up into a short 30-minute stop.

What happens during a pico laser session

  1. English consultation. The doctor identifies your pigment type and recommends a plan and number of sessions.
  2. Cleansing. Makeup and sunscreen are removed; numbing is used for spot or fractional treatment if needed.
  3. Laser. Pico toning takes about 15–20 minutes and feels like light snapping on the skin.
  4. Soothing. A calming mask or cooling, followed by sunscreen.
  5. Aftercare. Written instructions in English on sun protection and skincare.

Results, recovery and side effects

After pico toning, skin may be slightly pink for an hour or so, and most people can wear makeup the next day. After spot treatment, treated spots darken and form fine crusts that flake off in about five to seven days; do not pick them. After pico fractional, expect one to three days of redness. Brightening often shows after a few sessions; melasma typically improves gradually over a series and can return with sun exposure or hormonal changes, so maintenance is common.

Possible side effects include temporary redness, dryness, small pinpoint bleeding with spot or fractional settings, and, uncommonly, post-inflammatory darkening or, rarely, lightened spots (hypopigmentation) after repeated aggressive toning. These risks are why a doctor should set conservative parameters for melasma. Read sun protection after pico toning.

How many pico sessions can you fit into a trip?

Because pigmentation usually needs repeated treatment, the length of your stay shapes what is realistic. These are common patterns, which your doctor will adjust to your skin:

  • Three to five days. One pico toning session for brightness, or spot treatment for a few freckles if you can protect the healing spots from sun for a week. Melasma treatment can begin, but a single session is only a start.
  • One to two weeks. Two sessions of pico toning about a week apart, sometimes combined with soothing care such as LDM. This is a reasonable way to see how your skin responds before continuing at home.
  • Three weeks or longer. Three or more sessions, allowing the doctor to adjust settings based on how your pigment reacts.
  • Regular visitors. If you come to Seoul every few months, a 5- or 10-session course can be spread across trips, with home sun protection in between.

Whatever the length of your stay, consistent sun protection between sessions affects your result as much as the laser. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning, reapply when outdoors, and wear a hat on sunny days. Pausing irritating actives for a few days around each session also helps. Ask for a written record of the settings used so a doctor at home can continue safely.

Planning pico laser around your Seoul trip

  • Book ahead. Send your dates and photos through our consultation form; the doctor can suggest how many sessions fit your stay.
  • Avoid your arrival day. Start on day two so you can fit in follow-up sessions.
  • Getting here. Dernia is near Myeongdong Station (Line 4) and Euljiro 1-ga Station (Line 2). From Sinsa, take Line 3 to Chungmuro and change to Line 4, roughly 30–40 minutes. See location and directions.
  • Sun plans. Avoid beach days or long outdoor hikes straight after spot treatment.

Can't finish a series in Seoul? One or two sessions can still brighten skin, and you can continue at home with a local doctor. Read how many pico toning sessions you need for planning tips.
