Potenza vs Fractional Laser: Which Is Better for Acne Scars? — a guide for visitors in Myeongdong, Seoul.
Quick answer

Potenza and fractional lasers both remodel collagen to soften acne scars. Potenza is RF microneedling: fine needles deliver radiofrequency heat at a set depth while the surface stays largely intact, so downtime is about 2–4 days and it suits many skin types. Fractional lasers range from pico fractional, with 1–3 days of redness, to CO2 fractional, with 5–7 days of crusting and a stronger effect on deep scars. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong in Seoul, Potenza starts from ₩299,000 and fractional lasers from ₩149,000 per full-face session (KRW, excluding 10% VAT).

Potenza vs fractional laser: the short answer

Both work well, and the best choice depends on your scar type, skin tone and downtime. Potenza is a strong option for rolling scars, enlarged pores and people with medium to darker skin, because the radiofrequency energy is delivered beneath the surface with relatively low risk of pigment change. Fractional CO2 is often the most powerful single option for deeper boxcar and rolling scars, with about a week of visible healing. Pico fractional is the gentlest, suiting shallow scars and texture.

Many effective scar plans combine or alternate these treatments over several months.

Why scars need treatment beneath the surface

Acne scars are not a surface problem. They form when deep inflammation destroys collagen in the dermis, leaving a depression or a tethered band of scar tissue that pulls the skin down. To improve them, a treatment has to reach that depth and trigger the skin to rebuild. Potenza does this by placing heat directly where the needles stop, so the energy is delivered at the scar level while the outer skin is mostly spared. Fractional lasers do it from the top down, sending columns of energy through the surface into the dermis.

This difference explains much of the trade-off. Delivering energy under an intact surface tends to mean shorter recovery and less risk of pigment change, which is why RF microneedling is popular for medium and darker skin. Delivering energy from the surface, especially with ablative CO2, can produce a stronger texture change per session but requires the skin to heal over.

Active acne also matters. Potenza can be set to target oil glands and is sometimes used while occasional breakouts are still happening, whereas resurfacing lasers are usually reserved for skin where acne is already controlled.

What is Potenza RF microneedling?

Potenza is a radiofrequency (RF) microneedling device from Cynosure. Fine needles enter the skin to a set depth and release RF energy at their tips, heating the deeper layers to stimulate collagen while the surface stays largely intact. The doctor can adjust needle depth across different parts of the face, which helps treat scars at the level where they sit.

  • Session time: 40–60 minutes including numbing.
  • Downtime: 2–4 days of redness, sometimes with pinpoint marks.
  • Sessions: usually about 3, four to six weeks apart.
  • Also helps: active acne and large pores.

What are fractional lasers?

Fractional lasers treat a fraction of the skin in tiny columns, leaving healthy skin in between to speed healing. At Dernia, two fractional options are commonly used for scars:

  • CO2 fractional: ablative; removes microscopic cores of skin for a strong collagen response. 5–7 days of redness and crusting.
  • Pico fractional: non-ablative; creates remodeling zones under an intact surface. 1–3 days of redness.

Potenza vs fractional laser side-by-side

Potenza CO2 fractional Pico fractional
Energy RF via microneedles Ablative laser Picosecond laser
Surface Largely intact Micro-columns removed Intact
Downtime 2–4 days 5–7 days 1–3 days
Best for Rolling scars, pores, active acne Deeper scars, texture Shallow scars, pores
Pigment risk on darker skin Lower Higher Lower
Sessions About 3 2–4 3–5

Which acne scars respond best to each?

  • Rolling scars: Potenza is well suited, as RF at depth can soften the fibrous bands that pull the skin down. Subcision may be added.
  • Boxcar scars: CO2 fractional often helps most, especially for shallower boxcar scars with defined edges.
  • Ice pick scars: difficult for any device alone; focal techniques may be needed.
  • Large pores and oily skin: Potenza and pico fractional both help.

Who is a good candidate?

Usually a good fit

  • Potenza: rolling scars, pores, medium to darker skin
  • Potenza: scars with occasional active breakouts
  • CO2: deeper scars and a week to recover
  • Pico fractional: shallow scars and a busy schedule

Talk to the doctor first

  • Isotretinoin within recent months
  • Pacemakers or metal implants (for RF)
  • A tan, keloid history or active infection
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

What happens on treatment day

  1. English consultation. A licensed doctor maps your scars in side lighting and agrees the device, depth and price.
  2. Numbing. Numbing cream is applied for about 30–40 minutes.
  3. Treatment. Potenza feels like warm pressure with prickling; lasers feel like heat and snapping.
  4. Calming care. Soothing products or a booster are applied.
  5. Aftercare. You receive written instructions in English.

Results timeline

With both technologies, skin may feel smoother after a few weeks, but collagen continues to form for about three to six months. The clearest change is usually seen a few months after completing a series. Realistic goals are softer, shallower scars and better texture. See Potenza results.

Because scars change slowly, it is easy to underestimate progress. Taking photos in the same side light before each session gives a much clearer picture than the mirror. Many people also find their skin looks more even overall, with smaller-looking pores, before the scars themselves look noticeably shallower.

Can you combine Potenza and fractional laser?

Yes. A common approach is to alternate Potenza and CO2 fractional sessions over several months, or to use Potenza for rolling scars and pores while CO2 targets specific deeper areas. Boosters such as exosomes can also be delivered after microneedling to support healing. Your doctor plans the order and spacing so the skin has time to recover between sessions. Is it safe? Risks and side effects

  • Potenza: redness, swelling and pinpoint marks for a few days. Rarely, grid marks, temporary darkening or infection.
  • CO2 fractional: crusting and redness for about a week; higher risk of post-inflammatory darkening, especially on darker skin. Rarely infection or scarring.
  • Pico fractional: redness and occasional pinpoint bleeding; low risk overall.
