Quick answer

Thermage FLX uses monopolar radiofrequency to heat the deep dermis, while Sofwave uses parallel beams of ultrasound focused at a shallow, fixed depth in the dermis. Both aim to tighten skin and stimulate collagen in one session with little downtime, and both suit mild to moderate laxity rather than heavy sagging. Dernia Clinic Myeongdong does not currently offer Sofwave. If you are considering it, ask at consultation about alternatives such as Thermage FLX, which starts from ₩990,000 for 300 shots, or Ulthera Prime, from ₩390,000 (KRW, excluding 10% VAT).

Thermage FLX vs Sofwave: the short answer

Both treatments aim for the same outcome: firmer, tighter-looking skin and new collagen without surgery or needles. The difference is the energy. Thermage FLX uses radiofrequency (RF), which spreads heat through a volume of the deep dermis. Sofwave uses ultrasound delivered as parallel beams focused at a fixed, relatively shallow depth in the mid-dermis, with active surface cooling.

Please note that Dernia Clinic Myeongdong does not currently offer Sofwave. We describe it here in general terms so you can compare options. If Sofwave is what you had in mind, ask at consultation about alternatives such as Thermage FLX or ultrasound lifting with Ulthera Prime. For an overview of all devices, see Korean lifting treatments explained.

How does Thermage FLX work?

Thermage FLX, from Solta Medical, sends monopolar RF energy through a single-use tip. Before each pulse, the system reads the skin and adjusts output, while cooling spray protects the surface. The heat contracts existing collagen and starts a remodeling process that continues for two to six months. A dedicated eye tip allows treatment of the upper and lower eyelids. Read the full explanation on the Thermage FLX page.

A Thermage FLX appointment at Dernia follows these steps:

  1. English consultation. A licensed doctor checks your skin thickness and laxity, explains whether RF tightening suits you and agrees a shot plan and final price before anything starts.
  2. Cleansing and numbing. Topical numbing cream is applied for about 30–40 minutes.
  3. Grid marking. A temporary grid is drawn so every area is covered evenly.
  4. Treatment. The doctor passes the tip over each area. You feel short bursts of heat followed by cooling and vibration, and energy is adjusted to your comfort.
  5. Soothing. A calming mask settles redness, and you receive written aftercare in English.

How does Sofwave work?

Sofwave is an ultrasound device that sends multiple parallel beams into the skin at once. Instead of targeting the deeper SMAS layer like traditional HIFU, it is designed to heat a band in the mid-dermis, around a millimeter and a half below the surface, where collagen sits. Integrated cooling protects the outer skin. Like Thermage, it is usually performed as a single session, with results developing over the following months.

Because Sofwave and Thermage both work mainly in the dermis, they are often compared as skin tighteners, while devices such as Ulthera are considered deeper lifters.

Which should you choose?

For most people with mild to moderate laxity, either approach can soften crepiness and improve firmness. The choice usually comes down to availability, comfort, the areas you want treated and your doctor's assessment.

  • Choose RF (Thermage FLX) if you want a long-established single-session tightener, or treatment of the eyelids themselves.
  • Consider deeper ultrasound (Ulthera Prime) if your concern is heaviness along the jaw or brows, where lifting from the SMAS layer may help more than surface tightening.
  • Consider a combination if you have both crepey skin and deeper sagging. See combining Thermage and Ulthera.

Your doctor will explain honestly what each option can and cannot do for your face. Learn more about Ulthera Prime, or compare Thermage FLX vs Ulthera Prime.

Who is a good candidate for skin tightening?

Usually a good fit

  • Adults with mild to moderate laxity or crepey skin
  • Fine lines and softening texture on the cheeks, jaw or neck
  • People wanting results without needles or downtime
  • Visitors who prefer a single-session treatment

Talk to the doctor first

  • Heavy sagging or excess skin, where surgery may suit better
  • Pacemakers or implanted electronic devices (for RF)
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Active skin infection, open wounds or a recent procedure in the area

Results timeline: what to expect

Both RF and ultrasound tightening rely on collagen remodeling, so the timeline is similar. You may notice a fresh, slightly firm look on the day, then early change around one month, and the main result two to six months after treatment. With Thermage FLX, results commonly last about 12–18 months. Results vary with age, skin thickness, sun exposure and lifestyle, and no device stops natural aging. See the Thermage FLX results timeline and our guide on how long lifting results last.

Is it safe? Risks and side effects

Thermage FLX has a long safety record when performed under medical supervision with genuine tips. Common effects include redness for a few hours, mild swelling and tenderness over bony areas for a few days. Less commonly, small blisters, temporary bumps or tingling may occur. Rarely, uneven heating can cause contour changes. Ultrasound devices in general can cause temporary redness, swelling, tenderness or, uncommonly, nerve sensitivity. Whatever device you choose, make sure a licensed doctor assesses you, sets the plan and is available if anything unusual happens afterward. If you notice blistering, worsening pain or persistent numbness, contact the clinic promptly.
