Almost every non-surgical lifting treatment in Korea is either HIFU or RF. Understanding the difference makes it much easier to choose between Ulthera, Shurink, Thermage, Oligio and Volnewmer in Seoul.
HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound), such as Ulthera Prime and Shurink Universe, focuses heat into tiny points at set depths, including the SMAS support layer, so it is usually better for lifting sagging along the jawline, jowls and brows. RF (radiofrequency), such as Thermage FLX, Oligio X and Volnewmer, heats a broader volume of the dermis, so it is better for tightening loose, crepey skin and improving texture. Many people in Korea combine both. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, HIFU starts from ₩149,000 (Shurink, 300 shots) and RF from ₩390,000 (Oligio X or Volnewmer, 300 shots), excluding 10% VAT.
Prices are in Korean won, exclude 10% VAT and are confirmed by a doctor at consultation.
HIFU vs RF: the short answer
For sagging, meaning tissue that has dropped along the jawline, cheeks or brows, HIFU is usually the better starting point because it reaches the deeper support layer of the face. For loose, thin or crepey skin, RF is usually the better fit because it heats the skin itself more evenly. Most faces have a bit of both, which is why combining HIFU and RF is one of the most common approaches in Korean clinics.
Neither replaces a surgical facelift for heavy sagging, but both can make a meaningful difference for mild to moderate laxity with no downtime. For a full overview of devices, see Korean lifting treatments explained.
What is HIFU?
High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) concentrates ultrasound energy into tiny thermal points at a precise depth, much like a magnifying glass focuses sunlight. Cartridges or transducers are set to depths such as about 4.5 mm for the SMAS(the fibrous layer surgeons tighten in a facelift), 3.0 mm for the deep dermis and 1.5 mm for more superficial skin. The heat contracts tissue and triggers new collagen, producing a gradual lift.
At Dernia, our HIFU options are Ulthera Prime, which adds real-time imaging so the doctor can see tissue layers on screen, and Shurink Universe, a Korean device popular for comfortable, regular maintenance.
What is RF lifting?
Radiofrequency (RF) uses electrical energy that turns into heat as it meets the tissue's resistance. Monopolar RF spreads that heat through a broader volume of the dermis rather than focusing it into points. Collagen contracts on the day and new collagen forms over the following months, so skin looks firmer and smoother.
Our RF options include Thermage FLX, the long-established original with a dedicated eye tip, and the Korean devices Oligio X and Volnewmer, which give a similar type of tightening at a lower price per session.
HIFU vs RF side by side
| Factor | HIFU | RF |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | Focused ultrasound | Radiofrequency |
| Heat pattern | Tiny points at set depths | Broad, volumetric heating |
| Main layer | SMAS and deep dermis | Dermis |
| Best for | Sagging jawline, jowls, brows, under-chin | Crepey skin, texture, overall firmness, eyelids (Thermage) |
| Typical feel | Prickling heat or deep ache over bone | Waves or bursts of warmth |
| Results last | Ulthera ~1 year; Shurink ~3–6 months | Thermage ~12–18 months; Korean RF ~6–12 months |
| Downtime | None to minimal | None to minimal |
Which works better for sagging skin?
It depends on where the sagging comes from. A doctor will look at three things: how much the deeper support has loosened, how thick or thin your skin is, and whether volume loss is making things look heavier.
- Jowls, a blurred jawline or a heavy lower face: HIFU is usually first choice, often Ulthera Prime for a stronger annual lift or Shurink for maintenance.
- Crepey, thin or less elastic skin: RF is usually first choice, often Thermage FLX for longer-lasting results or a Korean RF device for regular care.
- Both deeper laxity and crepey skin: combining HIFU and RF treats both layers. See combining Thermage and Ulthera.
- Volume loss: lifting devices do not add volume. Collagen stimulators or filler may be discussed alongside.

Who is a good candidate for HIFU or RF?
Usually a good fit
- Adults with mild to moderate laxity, often from the 30s onward
- Early jowls, softening jawline or lower brows (HIFU)
- Crepey or thinning skin, eyelid hooding (RF)
- People wanting results without needles or downtime
Talk to the doctor first
- Heavy sagging or excess skin, where surgery may suit better
- Very thin faces with little fat (deep HIFU needs caution)
- Pacemakers or implanted electronic devices (RF)
- Pregnancy, active infection, open wounds or recent filler or threads in the area
Our guide to who should avoid lifting treatments covers this in more detail.
What happens on treatment day
- English consultation. A licensed doctor examines where your laxity sits and recommends HIFU, RF or both, then agrees the device, lines or shots and the price with you.
- Cleansing and numbing. Numbing cream is applied for about 30–40 minutes.
- Treatment. If you are having both, the doctor decides the order. Energy is delivered area by area and adjusted to your comfort.
- Soothing and aftercare. The skin is calmed and you leave with written aftercare in English.
Results timeline and how long they last
Both technologies work through collagen remodeling, so results build gradually. You may notice a fresh, slightly firmer look on the day; early change appears around two to four weeks; and the main result usually arrives at two to three months for HIFU and three to six months for Thermage. Longevity varies: Ulthera Prime commonly lasts about a year, Thermage about 12–18 months, Korean RF devices about 6–12 months and Shurink about 3–6 months. Our guide on how long lifting results last explains why.
Is it safe? Risks and side effects
Both HIFU and RF are well-established and considered low risk when performed under medical supervision with genuine devices. Common, temporary effects include redness, mild swelling and tenderness for a few hours to a few days. With HIFU, uncommon effects include small bruises, welts in a line pattern and temporary numbness; rarely, energy placed too deep in thin areas can cause temporary nerve weakness or unwanted fat loss. With RF, uncommon effects include small blisters, temporary bumps or tingling; rarely, uneven heating can cause burns or contour changes. Contact the clinic promptly if you notice blistering, persistent numbness, weakness or worsening pain.

Planning HIFU or RF around your Seoul trip
- Book ahead. Send your dates and concerns through the consultation form so a doctor can suggest a plan before you arrive.
- Avoid your arrival day. Schedule treatment for day two or later.
- One visit is usually enough. Most HIFU and RF treatments are single sessions, ideal for short trips.
- Getting here. Dernia is near Myeongdong Station (Line 4) and Euljiro 1-ga Station (Line 2).
Flying home? Neither HIFU nor RF leaves wounds, so most people can fly the next day. Skip saunas, jjimjilbang and intense workouts for a day or two, and use sunscreen daily. See our aftercare guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is HIFU or RF better for jowls?
HIFU is usually better for jowls because it reaches the deeper SMAS layer. RF can help by tightening the skin over the area, and many people combine both.
Which lasts longer, HIFU or RF?
It depends on the device. Thermage FLX commonly lasts 12–18 months and Ulthera Prime about a year, while Shurink and Korean RF devices usually need repeating sooner.
Can I have HIFU and RF on the same day?
Often yes, because they target different layers. Your doctor decides the order and settings based on your skin.
Which hurts more?
HIFU can feel like a deep ache over bone, while RF feels like bursts or waves of heat. Numbing cream is used and energy is adjusted to your comfort.
At what age should I start?
Many people start in their 30s when early laxity appears, but there is no fixed age. A doctor can advise whether treatment would help now.
How much does HIFU or RF cost at Dernia?
HIFU starts from ₩149,000 for 300 Shurink shots and RF from ₩390,000 for 300 Oligio X or Volnewmer shots, excluding 10% VAT.
