Jowl Lifting in Korea: Causes, Treatments and Expected Outcomes — Myeongdong, Seoul
Jowl Lifting in Korea: Causes, Treatments and Expected Outcomes — a guide for visitors in Myeongdong, Seoul.
Quick answer

Jowls form when the supporting tissue of the lower face loosens, fat pads descend and skin loses collagen, breaking the smooth line of the jaw. In Korea, mild to moderate jowls are usually treated without surgery: focused ultrasound (Ulthera Prime, Shurink Universe) lifts deeper layers, RF (Thermage FLX) tightens skin, PDO thread lifts reposition tissue, and fat reduction or filler refines contour. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong in Seoul, Shurink Universe starts from ₩149,000 for 300 shots and a one-area thread lift is ₩690,000 (KRW, excluding 10% VAT).

Main cause Laxity, fat descent, collagen loss
Main options HIFU, RF, threads, fat reduction
Downtime None to about 7 days, by treatment
Sessions Often one visit, plus maintenance
Results Gradual; peak at 2–6 months
Price in Seoul From ₩149,000 (Shurink, 300 shots)

Prices are in Korean won, exclude 10% VAT and are confirmed by a doctor at consultation.

What are jowls?

Jowls are the soft bulges of tissue that form along the lower jawline, on either side of the chin. They interrupt what used to be a smooth, continuous jawline and can make the lower face look heavier and older. Many people first notice them in their late 30s or 40s, although genetics, weight changes and sun exposure can bring them on earlier.

Jowls are one of the most common concerns we see from international visitors. The good news is that mild to moderate jowls often respond well to non-surgical treatment. See our jowls concern page for an overview.

What causes jowls?

  • Loosening of supporting tissue: the SMAS layer and facial ligaments weaken, allowing tissue to move downward.
  • Fat pad descent: fat in the mid-face and lower face slides down and gathers above the jawline.
  • Collagen and elastin loss: skin becomes thinner and less elastic, so it no longer holds its shape.
  • Volume loss higher up: when the cheeks lose volume, tissue below looks heavier by comparison.
  • Bone changes: the jawline gradually loses some definition with age.

Because several causes are usually involved, the best results often come from combining two treatments rather than relying on one.

Can you prevent jowls?

You cannot stop aging, but you can slow the factors that speed up jowl formation. Daily sunscreen protects collagen, which UV exposure breaks down. Avoiding smoking, keeping weight relatively stable and maintaining a consistent skincare routine all help. Many people in their 30s also choose preventive lifting, such as a yearly HIFU or RF session, to support collagen before visible laxity develops. Read when to start lifting treatments for guidance on timing.

Non-surgical jowl treatments in Seoul

Treatment What it does for jowls Downtime Typical duration
Ulthera Prime Lifts the SMAS along the jawline None to mild swelling About a year
Shurink Universe HIFU lift for jawline definition None About 3–6 months
Thermage FLX Tightens loose skin over the jowls None to minimal About 12–18 months
PDO thread lift Repositions descended tissue 3–7 days swelling or bruising About 12–18 months
Fat reduction (injection, Mini FX, ONDA) Reduces fullness in the jowl pocket None to several days Long-lasting if weight is stable
Filler or collagen stimulators Restores support higher up the face 1–3 days of swelling Months to years by product

Focused ultrasound (HIFU)

HIFU reaches the same deep layer that a surgical facelift tightens, making it the core treatment for early jowls. Ulthera Prime is chosen for a stronger, longer-lasting lift; Shurink Universe for a more affordable, repeatable option. See Ulthera Prime vs Shurink Universe.

Radiofrequency tightening

Thermage FLX and Korean RF devices tighten the skin itself, which helps when loose, crepey skin contributes to the jowl.

PDO thread lift

Threads with small cogs are placed under the skin to lift tissue along the jawline and stimulate collagen as they dissolve. This gives the most visible immediate change of the non-surgical options. Learn more on the thread lift page.

Fat reduction and volume support

Where a fat pocket sits in the jowl, a small reduction can sharpen the jawline. Conversely, restoring support in the cheeks with filler or a collagen stimulator can lift the lower face indirectly. Your doctor decides which applies to you.

Who is a good candidate for non-surgical jowl lifting?

Usually a good fit

  • Mild to moderate jowls with reasonable skin elasticity
  • A softening jawline that has not yet broken significantly
  • People wanting natural change with limited downtime
  • Those maintaining a previous lift

Talk to the doctor first

  • Heavy jowls with a lot of excess skin (surgery may be more effective)
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Bleeding disorders or blood thinners (for threads and injections)
  • Pacemakers or metal implants (for RF devices)
  • Very thin faces, where fat reduction or HIFU could cause hollowing

What to expect: a typical jowl lifting plan

  1. English consultation. The doctor examines your face at rest and while smiling, checks skin elasticity, fat distribution and cheek volume, and explains what each treatment can achieve.
  2. Agree a plan. Many people start with HIFU, with RF, a thread lift or volume support added if needed. Price is confirmed before treatment.
  3. Treatment day. Numbing is applied, then energy treatments are usually performed before injectables or threads.
  4. Follow-up. You receive written aftercare and advice on when to consider maintenance.

Expected outcomes and timeline

  • Immediately: a thread lift shows a visible lift; HIFU and RF may give a subtle firmness.
  • First week: swelling and tenderness settle; threads may feel tight when opening the mouth wide.
  • Months 1–3: collagen remodeling improves firmness and jawline definition.
  • Months 3–6: peak result for most combinations.

Realistic expectations matter. Non-surgical treatment can soften jowls and improve the jawline, but it rarely eliminates heavy jowls completely, and natural aging continues. Taking front and side photos before treatment helps you see the change. Read how long lifting results last.

Risks and side effects of jowl treatments

Energy devices commonly cause redness, swelling and tenderness, and rarely burns, temporary nerve irritation or unwanted fat loss. Thread lifts can cause bruising, swelling, asymmetry, skin dimpling, palpable threads and, rarely, infection or thread extrusion. Fat-dissolving injections cause swelling and tenderness and, rarely, temporary nerve injury affecting the smile. Filler carries a small but serious risk of vascular occlusion, which needs immediate treatment.

A licensed doctor should design the plan and explain these risks before you agree. See side effects and when to contact us.

Flying home? HIFU and RF rarely affect travel. If you have a thread lift, allow several days before a long flight and avoid wide mouth opening and pressure on the face. Our aftercare guide has more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Can jowls be fixed without surgery?

Mild to moderate jowls can often be improved without surgery using HIFU, RF, thread lifts or fat reduction. Heavy jowls with excess skin usually respond better to surgery.

What is the best treatment for jowls?

There is no single best treatment. HIFU is often the starting point, and many people combine it with RF tightening, a thread lift or volume support depending on the cause.

How long does a thread lift for jowls last?

PDO thread lift results commonly last about 12–18 months, although this varies between individuals.

Will filler make my jowls worse?

Filler placed directly into the jowl can add weight, which is why doctors usually place it higher, in the cheeks or along the jawline, to support the lower face.

At what age do jowls usually appear?

Many people notice them in their late 30s or 40s, but genetics, weight changes and sun damage can bring them on earlier.

Can I fly after jowl treatment?

After HIFU or RF, most people fly the next day. After a thread lift, allowing several days before a long flight is more comfortable.
