Pico Laser Treatment in Korea: Technology, Results and Recovery — a guide for visitors in Myeongdong, Seoul.
Quick answer

Pico laser treatment uses a picosecond laser that fires pulses lasting trillionths of a second to break pigment into tiny particles or create micro-zones of collagen remodeling. In Korea it comes in two main forms: pico toning for melasma, freckles and dull, uneven tone, and pico fractional for pores, texture and shallow acne scars. Toning has little or no downtime; fractional causes 1–3 days of redness. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong in Seoul, pico toning starts from ₩69,000 and pico fractional from ₩149,000 per full-face session (KRW, excluding 10% VAT).

Treatment type Picosecond laser (toning or fractional)
Session time 15–30 minutes
Downtime None (toning) to 1–3 days of redness (fractional)
Sessions Toning 5–10; fractional 3–5
Results Gradual, building over the series
Price in Seoul From ₩69,000 per session

Prices are in Korean won, exclude 10% VAT and are confirmed by a doctor at consultation.

What is a pico laser?

A pico laser is a medical laser that delivers energy in picosecond pulses, meaning trillionths of a second. Older pigment lasers, such as Q-switched lasers, work in nanoseconds, which are a thousand times longer. That difference matters. When energy arrives in an extremely short burst, it creates a pressure effect that shatters pigment into very fine particles rather than relying mostly on heat. Your body then clears those particles gradually through its normal processes.

Because less heat spreads into the surrounding skin, pico lasers can treat pigment at lower energy levels. That is one reason they have become so widely used in Korea, where many people want steady brightening with minimal disruption to their daily life. You can read the device background on our pico toning treatment page.

Pico toning vs pico fractional: which pico laser treatment do you need?

The same picosecond platform can be used in two quite different ways. Choosing the right one depends on whether your main concern is color or texture.

Pico toning Pico fractional
Main goal Even tone, fade pigment Refine pores, texture and shallow scars
How energy is delivered Low energy spread evenly across the face Concentrated into tiny points with a fractional handpiece
Best for Melasma, freckles, sun spots, dullness Large pores, rough texture, fine lines, shallow acne scars
Typical sessions 5–10, one to two weeks apart 3–5, about four weeks apart
Downtime None to mild redness 1–3 days of redness
Numbing Usually not needed Numbing cream included

Many people with both pigment and texture concerns alternate the two, or combine them in one visit. Your doctor decides the order based on how your skin responds. For a side-by-side with older technology, see pico toning vs laser toning.

Who is a good candidate for pico laser in Seoul?

Usually a good fit

  • Melasma, freckles or sun spots you want to fade gradually
  • Dull, uneven skin tone
  • Enlarged pores or rough texture (fractional)
  • Shallow, rolling acne scars (fractional)
  • People who want little visible downtime during a trip

Talk to the doctor first

  • A fresh tan or recent sunburn
  • Active infection, cold sores or open wounds in the area
  • Recent isotretinoin use or other photosensitizing medication
  • Pregnancy
  • A history of keloid scarring or post-inflammatory pigmentation

Not all pigment is the same. Melasma, freckles and sun spots respond differently, and a few lesions should be examined before any laser is used. Read pigmentation types explained for background.

What happens on pico laser treatment day

  1. English consultation. A licensed doctor examines your skin, identifies the type of pigment or texture concern, and agrees a plan and price with you.
  2. Cleansing. Makeup and sunscreen are removed so the laser reaches the skin evenly.
  3. Numbing if needed. Pico fractional uses numbing cream for about 30 minutes; pico toning usually does not.
  4. Laser passes. You wear protective eye shields while the doctor passes the handpiece across the face. Most people describe a light snapping or prickling sensation.
  5. Soothing care. Cooling, a calming mask or LDM ultrasound settles warmth and redness before you leave.

Pico toning itself takes about 15–20 minutes. Fractional sessions take 20–30 minutes plus numbing time.

Pico laser results: what to expect and when

Pico laser is a gradual treatment. One session rarely transforms the skin; instead, each session builds on the last.

When Pico toning Pico fractional
Day 0–3 Fresh, slightly brighter look; mild pinkness Redness and a sandpaper feel for 1–3 days
Weeks 1–2 Some pigment may look a little lighter Smoother surface as micro-zones heal
After 3–5 sessions Noticeably more even tone for many people Pores and texture begin to look refined
End of series Best result; maintenance as needed Collagen continues to remodel for weeks

These are typical patterns, not guarantees. Melasma in particular is a chronic condition that can return with sun exposure, heat or hormonal changes, so maintenance and sun protection matter as much as the laser. See pico toning results and how many pico toning sessions you need.

Recovery and aftercare after pico laser

  • Same day: after toning, most people can wear light makeup the next morning or sooner; after fractional, wait until the redness settles, usually 24 hours.
  • First few days: skip saunas, jjimjilbang, hot baths and intense workouts; use a gentle cleanser and plain moisturizer.
  • Active skincare: pause retinoids, exfoliating acids and scrubs for several days, or as your doctor advises.
  • Sun protection: apply broad-spectrum sunscreen every day and reapply when outdoors. This is the single most important step for pigment results.

Flying home? Pico toning has almost no downtime, so flying the next day is usually fine. After pico fractional, cabin air is dry, so pack a rich moisturizer and sunscreen. Our sun protection guide explains what to do in the weeks after you get home.

Is pico laser safe? Risks and side effects

Pico lasers have a good safety profile when settings are matched to your skin type and concern by a trained doctor. Common, temporary effects include redness, mild swelling, a warm feeling and, after fractional treatment, tiny dots or a rough texture for a few days.

Less common risks include post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (temporary darkening), which is more likely in darker skin tones or if the skin is exposed to strong sun soon after treatment. Rarely, overly aggressive toning can cause small light spots (hypopigmentation), which is why conservative settings and spacing between sessions are important. Blistering and scarring are rare with appropriate settings. If something feels unusual, our guide on side effects and when to contact us explains what to watch for.

Planning pico laser around your Seoul trip

  • Book ahead. Send your dates and concerns through our consultation form. If you are in Seoul for a week or more, two toning sessions about a week apart are often possible.
  • Avoid your arrival day. Flights and jet lag make it harder to judge your skin; many visitors book day two.
  • Front-load fractional. If you choose pico fractional, schedule it early in your trip so redness settles before you fly.
  • Easy to reach. Dernia is in Myeongdong, near Myeongdong Station (Line 4) and Euljiro 1-ga Station (Line 2). See location and directions.
  • Continue at home. If you cannot finish a series in Seoul, your doctor can suggest how to continue safely.

Frequently asked questions

Does pico laser hurt?

Pico toning feels like light snapping on the skin and is usually done without numbing. Pico fractional is more intense, so numbing cream is applied first.

How many pico laser sessions do I need?

Pico toning usually needs 5–10 sessions one to two weeks apart. Pico fractional usually needs 3–5 sessions about four weeks apart.

Is pico laser better than Q-switched laser toning?

Pico lasers use shorter pulses that rely more on a pressure effect than heat, which can mean lower energy and less heat in the skin. Both can work well; your doctor chooses based on your pigment type and skin.

Can pico laser remove melasma permanently?

No laser cures melasma. Pico toning can lighten it gradually, but melasma can return with sun, heat or hormonal changes, so maintenance and daily sunscreen are essential.

Can I fly after pico laser?

Yes. After pico toning most people can fly the next day. After pico fractional, allow for 1–3 days of redness and keep skin moisturized during the flight.

How much does pico laser cost in Seoul?

At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, pico toning starts from ₩69,000 and pico fractional from ₩149,000 per full-face session, excluding 10% VAT.
