Pico Laser vs IPL: Pigmentation and Sun Damage Treatment Compared — a guide for visitors in Myeongdong, Seoul.
Quick answer

Pico laser and IPL both treat sun damage, but in different ways. A pico laser uses a single wavelength in ultra-short picosecond pulses to shatter pigment, and as pico toning it is gentle enough for melasma and repeated sessions. IPL (intense pulsed light) is a broad-spectrum light that treats brown spots and diffuse redness together, usually in about three sessions, with spots darkening and flaking for 5–7 days. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong in Seoul, pico toning starts from ₩69,000 and IPL from ₩89,000 per full-face session (KRW, excluding 10% VAT).

Pico laser Single wavelength, picosecond pulses
IPL Broad-spectrum pulsed light
Best for Pico: melasma, pigment; IPL: spots + redness
Sessions Pico toning 5–10; IPL about 3
Downtime Pico minimal; IPL spots flake 5–7 days
Price in Seoul From ₩69,000 / ₩89,000

Pico laser vs IPL: the short answer

Choose IPL when you have classic sun damage, meaning scattered sun spots and freckles plus diffuse redness, and you want to treat both together in a few sessions. Choose a pico laser, usually as pico toning, when you have melasma or pigment that needs a gentle, controlled approach, or when your skin type makes IPL less suitable. Pico can also be used with spot settings for individual lesions.

A doctor's examination is important because IPL can aggravate melasma in some people, and treating melasma like ordinary sun spots is one of the most common reasons pigment gets worse.

What sun damage looks like on the skin

Years of UV exposure show up in several ways at once. Brown sun spots and freckles appear on the cheeks, nose and forehead. Fine red vessels and a general flush develop across the cheeks. Texture becomes rougher and tone more uneven, and the skin can look dull even when it is well hydrated. Visitors from sunny countries such as Australia and Singapore often see all of these together, while others may have mostly pigment or mostly redness.

That mix is why the choice between IPL and pico is rarely about which device is better in general. It is about which device matches the dominant problem on your face. Brown plus red points toward IPL; patchy, hormonal pigment points toward gentle pico toning; isolated, well-defined spots may respond to pico spot treatment. Some people do best with a staged plan: IPL first to clear spots and redness, then pico toning to even the remaining tone.

Wherever you start, sunscreen is part of the treatment. Without daily protection, new spots continue to form, and the improvement from any laser or light treatment fades sooner.

What is IPL?

IPL (intense pulsed light) is not a laser. It is a broad spectrum of light, filtered to target brown pigment and small red blood vessels at the same time. Each flash heats pigment and vessels, so sun spots darken and flake off over about a week, and redness gradually reduces. It is efficient for sun-damaged skin on the face, neck and décolletage.

  • Treatment time: about 20 minutes for the face.
  • Downtime: spots darken and flake for 5–7 days; mild redness.
  • Sessions: usually about 3, three to four weeks apart.

What is a pico laser?

A picosecond laser fires a single wavelength in pulses measured in trillionths of a second. The extremely short pulse shatters pigment into tiny particles with mainly mechanical rather than heat energy, which the body then clears. At low energy across the whole face, this is called pico toning, used for melasma, dullness and uneven tone. At higher energy on specific spots, it treats freckles and sun spots more directly.

See the pico toning page for details.

Pico laser vs IPL side-by-side

Pico laser (toning) IPL photofacial
Energy Single wavelength, picosecond pulses Broad-spectrum light
Targets Pigment Pigment and red vessels
Best for Melasma, dullness, freckles Sun spots, freckles, diffuse redness
Sessions Usually 5–10 Usually about 3
Downtime None to mild redness Spots darken and flake 5–7 days
Melasma Often used, gently Use with caution
Tanned skin Caution Not suitable

Which is better for your type of sun damage?

  • Scattered sun spots and freckles on fair to medium skin: IPL is efficient, especially if redness is present too.
  • Melasma or hormonal patches: pico toning is generally preferred, with gentle settings over many sessions. See melasma.
  • Redness and broken capillaries: IPL helps diffuse redness; for more visible vessels your doctor may suggest Excel V.
  • Darker skin types: pico toning is often safer than IPL, which carries a higher risk of pigment change on darker skin.

Who is a good candidate?

Usually a good fit

  • IPL: sun spots plus diffuse redness on untanned skin
  • IPL: fewer sessions on a short trip
  • Pico: melasma, dullness or uneven tone
  • Pico: no tolerance for visible flaking

Talk to the doctor first

  • A tan or recent strong sun exposure
  • Melasma (for IPL)
  • Photosensitizing medicines or recent isotretinoin
  • A history of keloids or pigment problems after previous lasers

What happens on treatment day

  1. English consultation. A licensed doctor identifies your pigment type and checks for tanning.
  2. Cleansing. Makeup and sunscreen are removed.
  3. Protection. Goggles are worn; IPL uses a cool gel on the skin.
  4. Treatment. IPL delivers bright flashes with a snapping sensation. Pico toning feels like light snapping or warmth.
  5. Soothing and sunscreen. Calming care is applied, and you leave with sunscreen on.

Results timeline

After IPL, treated spots usually darken within a day or two and flake off over about a week, revealing clearer skin. Redness improves more gradually across the course. After pico toning, the change is quieter: skin tends to look brighter after a few sessions, with clearer improvement as the series continues. See IPL results and pico toning results.

Results also depend on what happens between sessions. Pigment that is broken down can return if the skin is exposed to strong sun, and redness can flare with heat, alcohol and spicy food. Following the aftercare plan, wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen daily and avoiding saunas for a few days after each session all help the improvement last. Most people with sun damage benefit from a maintenance session once or twice a year, often before or after summer.

Is it safe? Risks and side effects

  • IPL: redness, swelling and darkened spots are expected. Less commonly, blisters, temporary darkening or lightening of skin, or worsening of melasma can occur. Tanned skin raises these risks.
  • Pico: mild redness and occasionally pinpoint bleeding at spot-treatment settings. Rarely, rebound pigmentation or patchy lightening with overly aggressive treatment.

Strict sun protection before and after treatment is essential. Read aftercare after laser treatment.

Usually about three, three to four weeks apart.

What is the downtime after IPL?

Treated spots darken and flake off over about 5–7 days. Makeup can usually cover them.
