Pico toning and chemical peels both brighten uneven skin, but one works with light beneath the surface and the other by exfoliating from the top down. Here is how they compare for visitors to Seoul.
Pico toning uses a low-energy picosecond laser to break up excess pigment beneath the surface, with little or no downtime, over about 5–10 sessions. Chemical peels use acids to exfoliate the outer skin, improving dullness, texture and superficial pigment, but medium and deeper peels can cause several days of peeling. For melasma and uneven tone on a trip, pico toning is usually the more controlled option. Dernia Clinic Myeongdong offers pico toning from ₩69,000 per session (KRW, excluding 10% VAT) but does not offer chemical peels as a standalone service.
Prices are in Korean won, exclude 10% VAT and are confirmed by a doctor at consultation. Dernia does not offer standalone chemical peels.
Pico toning vs chemical peels: the short answer
For pigment-driven unevenness such as melasma, sun spots and freckles, pico toning is usually the more targeted and predictable option, with almost no downtime. For surface dullness and rough texture, a chemical peel can give a quick glow by removing dead skin cells. Strong peels can also improve pigment, but they carry more downtime and a higher risk of irritation-related darkening on some skin types.
Dernia Clinic Myeongdong does not currently offer chemical peels as a standalone service. A mild calming peel is part of our Acne Clinic Program, and our Aqua Peel facial offers gentle exfoliation. If you are interested in a stronger peel, ask at consultation about alternatives such as pico toning, laser toning or pico fractional.
What causes uneven skin tone?
- Melasma: hormonal, symmetrical patches, often on the cheeks and forehead.
- Sun spots and freckles: defined brown spots from UV exposure.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: brown marks after acne, rashes or irritation.
- Dullness: a buildup of dead skin cells, dehydration and uneven texture that scatter light.
- Redness: diffuse redness or visible vessels that make tone look patchy.
Identifying which of these is dominant is the first step. Read uneven skin tone and pigmentation types explained.
How does pico toning work?
Pico toning passes a picosecond laser evenly over the whole face at low energy. The ultra-short pulses break pigment into tiny particles with mostly mechanical rather than heat energy, and the body clears those particles over the following weeks. Because the surface is not damaged, there is usually no peeling and you can return to your plans the same day.
- Session time: 15–20 minutes.
- Downtime: none to mild redness.
- Sessions: usually 5–10, one to two weeks apart.
See the pico toning page.
How do chemical peels work?
Chemical peels apply an acid solution to the skin to dissolve the bonds between dead cells and, at higher strengths, remove deeper layers. As the skin renews, it looks smoother and brighter. Peels are grouped by depth:
- Superficial peels(for example, mild alpha- or beta-hydroxy acids): light flaking at most; often repeated as a series.
- Medium-depth peels: several days of visible peeling and redness; stronger effect on pigment and fine lines.
- Deep peels: significant downtime and risk, rarely used for routine tone concerns.
Peels are widely used around the world and can be effective, but results depend heavily on the acid, the concentration and how the skin responds.
For a visitor, the practical issue with medium-depth peels is timing. Peeling usually starts a couple of days after treatment and continues for several days, often right in the middle of a trip. Peeling skin is also more sensitive to sun, which is hard to avoid while sightseeing. Light peels avoid most of this, but they work mainly on the surface and need repeating to have a meaningful effect on pigment. That is one reason many international patients in Seoul end up choosing laser-based toning instead: the effect builds steadily, and nobody can tell you have had anything done.
At home, many people use gentle at-home exfoliating acids as part of their routine. These can complement in-clinic laser treatment, but they should be paused around laser sessions. Your doctor will tell you when to stop and restart them, along with retinol and other strong actives.
Pico toning vs chemical peels side-by-side

| Downtime | None to mild redness | None (light) to several days of peeling (medium) |
| Melasma | Commonly used, gently | Possible with care; irritation can worsen it |

Which is better for you?
Pico toning is usually a good fit
- Melasma or patchy hormonal pigment
- Sun spots and freckles with dull tone
- Wanting no visible peeling during a trip
- Skin that reacts to acids or exfoliants
Talk to the doctor first
- A fresh tan or recent strong sun exposure
- Active eczema, rosacea flares or broken skin
- Recent isotretinoin or photosensitizing medicines
- Mostly texture or scarring rather than pigment
If texture is your main concern, ask about pico fractional, which remodels the skin rather than simply exfoliating it. For a gentle glow with no downtime, an Aqua Peel or Hydrafacial offers mild exfoliation using water-based solutions instead of strong acids.
Why some doctors prefer lasers for melasma
Melasma is sensitive to inflammation. Anything that irritates the skin, including strong acids, aggressive scrubs or heat, can trigger it to darken. Medium-depth peels deliberately injure the skin, which is why they carry a higher risk of rebound pigmentation in melasma-prone skin, particularly on medium to darker skin tones. Low-energy pico toning aims to break down pigment with minimal inflammation, which is why it is a common first choice in Korea for melasma. Neither approach cures melasma; both require maintenance and strict sun protection. See melasma.
Results timeline with pico toning
Most people notice brighter, clearer-looking skin after two or three sessions, with a more even tone after five to ten. The change is gradual, which suits people who prefer subtle improvement. Pigment can return with sun exposure, heat and hormonal changes, so maintenance sessions every few months are common. See pico toning results.
What happens on treatment day
- English consultation. A licensed doctor examines your pigment and recommends a number of sessions.
- Cleansing. Makeup and sunscreen are removed.
- Toning. Wearing goggles, you feel light snapping as the laser passes over the face.
- Soothing. A calming mask or LDM can be added, and sunscreen is applied.
Is it safe? Risks and side effects
- Pico toning: mild redness for a few hours is common. Rarely, temporary darkening, pinpoint marks, or patchy lightening with overly frequent high-energy treatment.
- Chemical peels: stinging, redness, peeling and dryness are expected. Stronger peels can cause prolonged redness, darkening, infection or, rarely, scarring.
Daily sunscreen is essential after either. Read sun protection after pico toning.
