RF Microneedling for Acne Scars: How It Works — Myeongdong, Seoul
RF Microneedling for Acne Scars: How It Works — a guide for visitors in Myeongdong, Seoul.
Quick answer

RF microneedling treats acne scars by inserting fine needles to a precise depth and releasing radiofrequency heat at the tips. The controlled injury and heat trigger the skin to build new collagen under the scar, gradually lifting rolling and some boxcar scars and refining texture. Because the surface is mostly spared, downtime is usually 2–4 days of redness. Most people need about three sessions four to six weeks apart. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong in Seoul, RF microneedling with Potenza starts from ₩299,000 for the full face (KRW, excluding 10% VAT).

Treatment type Radiofrequency microneedling
Session time 40–60 minutes including numbing
Downtime 2–4 days of redness
Sessions Usually about 3
Best for Rolling scars, shallow boxcar scars, pores
Price in Seoul From ₩299,000 (Potenza, full face)

Why acne scars form

When an acne lesion is deep and inflamed, the body's repair process can damage or lose collagen in the dermis. If too little new collagen is laid down, the surface sinks and forms a depression. In rolling scars, fibrous bands also tether the skin downward, creating a wavy surface. Boxcar scars have sharper edges, and ice pick scars are narrow and deep.

Acne scars are therefore a problem of missing and disorganized collagen beneath the surface. Any effective treatment needs to reach that deeper layer and prompt the skin to rebuild. Read more on our acne scars page.

How RF microneedling works, step by step

RF microneedling combines two mechanisms that work together.

  1. Needles reach the target depth. Fine needles, often insulated along most of their length, enter the skin to a depth set by the doctor, typically where scar tissue sits.
  2. Radiofrequency heats the dermis. RF energy is released at or near the needle tips, creating tiny zones of heat in the dermis while the surface receives little energy.
  3. Collagen contracts and the healing response starts. Heat causes existing collagen to tighten and signals the skin to repair the controlled injury.
  4. New collagen is built. Over the following weeks and months, fibroblasts lay down fresh collagen and elastin, gradually filling and smoothing depressions.
  5. Repeat sessions build on each other. Each session adds another round of remodeling, which is why a series gives the best results.

Compared with microneedling alone, the added heat produces a stronger collagen response. Compared with ablative lasers, the surface is less disrupted, so recovery is faster.

Which acne scars respond best to RF microneedling?

Scar type Typical response to RF microneedling
Rolling scars Often good; tethering and depth can improve over a series
Shallow boxcar scars Moderate to good
Deep boxcar scars Moderate; may be combined with CO2 fractional
Ice pick scars Limited alone; other targeted techniques usually needed
Enlarged pores and texture Good
Red or brown post-acne marks Not the main tool; vascular or pigment lasers suit better

For flat red or brown marks, see post-acne marks. For an overall plan that combines methods, see our acne scar treatment plan.

Why depth and energy settings matter

The skill in RF microneedling lies in matching needle depth and energy to the skin. Acne scars sit at different depths across the face, and skin thickness varies between the forehead, cheeks and jawline. Treating too shallowly may produce little change, while too much energy at the wrong depth increases the risk of prolonged redness, pigment changes or, rarely, scarring.

A careful doctor maps the face before treatment, often choosing deeper settings over thicker cheek skin with rolling scars and more conservative settings over bony or thinner areas. Several passes may be made over scarred zones, and energy may be reduced for darker skin types to limit heat at the surface. These adjustments are why two RF microneedling sessions with the same device can feel and perform quite differently.

Combining RF microneedling with other techniques

Because acne scars are often mixed, RF microneedling is frequently used as part of a broader plan. CO2 fractional laser may be added for sharper boxcar scars, and treatments for red or brown marks can be scheduled separately. Collagen-stimulating injectables, such as Juvelook, are sometimes considered for shallow, widespread scarring. Your doctor will explain which combinations make sense for your skin and how to space them.

Who is a good candidate?

Usually a good fit

  • Rolling or shallow boxcar acne scars
  • Uneven texture and enlarged pores
  • Medium to darker skin tones wanting lower pigment risk
  • People who can plan a series over several months

Talk to the doctor first

  • Pacemakers, implanted electronics or metal implants in the area
  • Active infection or cold sores
  • Recent isotretinoin use
  • Keloid tendency
  • Pregnancy

Results timeline and what to expect

In the first week, skin may look slightly fuller because of swelling and early repair. Real changes in scar depth appear gradually, from about four weeks after a session and continuing for two to three months. After a full series, many people see a clear softening of rolling scars and a smoother overall surface. RF microneedling improves acne scars but rarely removes them entirely, and responses vary between individuals. Photos taken in consistent, angled lighting are the best way to track progress. See Potenza results.

Recovery, aftercare and safety

Typical effects include redness, warmth, mild swelling and small grid marks, usually fading within 2–4 days. Keep skin clean and well moisturized, avoid makeup for about 24 hours, skip saunas and heavy exercise for a few days, pause retinoids and acids for about a week, and use sunscreen daily. Less common risks include temporary breakouts, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, infection and, rarely, small burns or scarring. A doctor-led plan with appropriate depth and energy reduces these risks.

Flying home? Most people can fly two to three days after RF microneedling. Bring a rich moisturizer and sunscreen for the trip. Our aftercare guide covers what is normal.

  • Which device and needle depth do you plan to use, and why?
  • Will my active acne be treated first?

Frequently asked questions

How does RF microneedling improve acne scars?

Needles deliver radiofrequency heat into the dermis, which tightens existing collagen and triggers the skin to build new collagen under the scar, gradually smoothing depressions.

Which acne scars respond best?

Rolling scars and shallow boxcar scars usually respond best. Deep ice pick scars respond less to RF microneedling alone.

How many sessions are needed for acne scars?

Most people need about three sessions four to six weeks apart, with improvement continuing for months afterward.

Is RF microneedling safe for darker skin?

It is often considered well suited to darker skin because energy is delivered below the surface, but post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can still occur, so settings are adjusted carefully.

What is the downtime?

Usually 2–4 days of redness and mild swelling, with makeup usually possible after about 24 hours.

How much does RF microneedling cost in Seoul?

At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, Potenza RF microneedling starts from ₩299,000 for the full face, excluding 10% VAT.
