Quick answer

Ulthera Prime is the latest Ultherapy system: a micro-focused ultrasound treatment with real-time imaging that heats the deep SMAS layer and dermis to lift and firm the brows, jawline, under-chin and neck. It suits adults with mild to moderate laxity who want a non-surgical lift with little or no downtime. Some lift is visible early, with a peak at about two to three months. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong in Seoul, Ulthera Prime starts from ₩390,000 for 100 lines and ₩1,390,000 for a 400-line full face (KRW, excluding 10% VAT).

Treatment type Micro-focused ultrasound with imaging
Session time 30–90 minutes depending on lines
Downtime None to mild swelling or tenderness

Visible result Early lift; peak at 2–3 months
Price in Seoul From ₩390,000 (100 lines)

Prices are in Korean won, exclude 10% VAT and are confirmed by a doctor at consultation.

What is Ulthera Prime?

Ulthera Prime is the newest generation of Ultherapy, a micro-focused ultrasound (MFU) lifting treatment. It delivers tiny, precise points of heat at set depths under the skin — including the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system), the same supportive layer a surgeon tightens during a facelift. The skin surface is left intact.

What sets Ultherapy apart from many other focused ultrasound devices is built-in ultrasound imaging. The doctor can see the tissue layers on a screen before each line is delivered, which helps place energy at the intended depth and avoid bone. Ulthera Prime updates the imaging and handpiece design for clearer visualization and a smoother workflow. Read the full device overview on our Ulthera Prime treatment page.

How does Ulthera Prime work?

Each pass of the transducer lays down a row of small thermal coagulation points, called a line. The tissue at each point is heated to roughly the temperature at which collagen contracts, then the body starts a healing response around it.

  • Immediate effect: heated collagen fibers contract, so some people notice a slight lift on the day.
  • Remodeling phase: over the next two to three months, new collagen and elastin form, firming the supporting layers from within.
  • Multiple depths: different transducers target different depths, typically around 4.5 mm (SMAS), 3.0 mm (deep dermis) and 1.5 mm (superficial dermis), so the doctor can build a plan in layers.

Because ultrasound works deeper than most radiofrequency devices, Ulthera is generally chosen for lift, while RF devices such as Thermage are chosen for skin tightening and texture. Our guide to HIFU vs RF lifting explains the difference in more detail.

Who is a good candidate for Ulthera Prime?

Usually a good fit

  • Adults from about their mid-30s with mild to moderate laxity
  • Lowered brows, early jowls or a softening jawline
  • Looseness under the chin or on the neck
  • People who want a lift without surgery or visible downtime
  • Those maintaining a previous surgical or non-surgical result

Talk to the doctor first

  • Heavy sagging or significant excess skin
  • Very thin faces with little soft tissue (volume loss may worsen)
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Open wounds, active acne or infection in the treatment area
  • Recent filler or threads in the same area

Ultherapy is not a facelift. If loose skin is advanced, a surgical opinion may serve you better. If your main issue is hollowness rather than sagging, the doctor may suggest volume or collagen-stimulating options instead. See sagging skin treatments and our list of who should avoid lifting treatments.

What happens on Ulthera Prime treatment day

  1. English consultation. A licensed doctor assesses where your laxity sits, then agrees the number of lines, depths and final price with you.
  2. Cleansing and numbing. Topical numbing cream is applied; some people also take a mild pain reliever if the doctor agrees.
  3. Mapping. The treatment zones are marked, avoiding sensitive nerve areas.
  4. Imaging and treatment. The doctor views the tissue layers on screen, then delivers each line. You feel short bursts of deep heat and a prickling sensation, strongest over bony areas.
  5. Soothing. Gel is removed and the skin is calmed before you leave.

Ultherapy is known for being one of the more uncomfortable lifting treatments, mainly along the jawline and brow bone. The doctor can adjust energy and pacing during the session. A full-face plan usually takes about an hour of treatment time, plus numbing, so allow around two hours at the clinic in total.

Ulthera Prime results timeline

When What you may notice
Day 0 Mild redness and slight swelling; some people notice a subtle lift
Days 1–7 Tenderness when touching the jawline or chewing firmly; occasional tingling
Weeks 4–6 Gradual firming as collagen remodeling begins
Months 2–3 Peak lift for most people; brows, jawline and under-chin look more defined
About 12 months Gradual return toward natural aging; many plan a maintenance session

Results vary with age, skin quality and the number of lines. See the Ulthera Prime results guide and how long Ulthera lasts.

Recovery and aftercare after Ultherapy

Most people return to normal activities the same day. Common, temporary effects include redness, mild swelling and tenderness for a few days.

  • Same day: makeup is usually fine once redness settles.
  • First few days: avoid saunas, jjimjilbang, hot yoga and heavy alcohol, which can increase swelling.
  • Every day: wear broad-spectrum sunscreen and keep skin moisturized.
  • Tell the clinic if you notice numbness, bruising or tenderness that does not improve after a week.

Flying home? Ulthera involves no injections or open wounds, so most people can fly the next day. If you add Botox or filler on the same trip, ask how to space them. Our aftercare guide covers this in English.

Is Ulthera Prime safe? Risks and side effects

Ultherapy has a long track record when performed by trained medical staff using genuine equipment. Still, it is a heat-based medical procedure. Possible side effects include temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising, welts or skin striping along the lines, and transient numbness. Rarely, temporary nerve irritation can affect the smile or cause weakness that usually resolves over weeks. In very thin faces, excess energy in fat layers can contribute to a hollow look, which is why careful mapping matters.

Before booking anywhere in Korea, check that a licensed doctor performs or directly supervises your session, that the device is genuine Ulthera with real-time imaging, and that the line count is confirmed in writing. Our guide on how to choose a skin clinic in Seoul lists more questions.

Planning Ulthera Prime around your Seoul trip

  • Book ahead. Send your dates and concerns through our consultation form so a plan can be suggested before you land.
  • Avoid your arrival day. Rest after the flight; many visitors book treatment for day two or three.
  • Getting here. Dernia is in Myeongdong, a short walk from Myeongdong Station (Line 4) and Euljiro 1-ga Station (Line 2).
  • Leave space before your flight. A day between treatment and departure gives time for any swelling to settle and for a quick check if needed.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ulthera Prime the same as HIFU?

Ulthera Prime is a micro-focused ultrasound device, which is a type of HIFU. What distinguishes it is real-time imaging, which lets the doctor see tissue layers before each line is delivered.

Does Ulthera Prime hurt?

It can be uncomfortable, especially over the jawline and brow bone. Numbing cream and adjusting energy levels help, and most people find it manageable for the length of the session.

How long do Ultherapy results last?

Results commonly last about a year, with some people seeing longer benefit. Many plan a maintenance session roughly once a year.

Can I fly after Ulthera Prime?

Yes, most people fly the next day. There are no wounds or injections, and mild swelling or tenderness does not usually affect travel.

How many lines of Ulthera do I need?

It depends on the area and your laxity. A single target area may need about 100 lines, while a full face is commonly around 400 lines; your doctor confirms the plan at consultation.

Can I combine Ulthera with Thermage?

Yes. Ulthera lifts the deeper layers while Thermage tightens the skin itself, and many people combine them. Your doctor will advise on sequencing and energy.
