How Thermage FLX works

Thermage FLX delivers monopolar radiofrequency through a single-use treatment tip. The energy spreads through the deep dermis and the fibrous bands below it, heating a broad volume of tissue rather than individual points. Collagen contracts with the heat, so some firming can show the same day, and new collagen builds over the next two to six months.

The tip adjusts energy pulse by pulse, while cryogen spray and vibration protect the surface. Because the effect is spread evenly, Thermage excels at texture, crepiness and overall firmness, including on the eyelids.

How Ulthera Prime works

Ulthera Prime is the latest Ultherapy platform. It focuses ultrasound energy into tiny thermal points at set depths, including 4.5 mm, which reaches the SMAS: the muscle and connective-tissue layer a surgeon tightens during a facelift. Each point heats to a coagulation temperature while the skin surface stays intact.

Real-time imaging lets your doctor see the tissue layers on screen and place energy precisely, which matters along the jawline and neck. The treated points remodel over two to three months, giving a gradual lift of the brow, jowls and under-chin.

Choose Thermage FLX if…

  • Your main concern is skin quality: crepey texture, fine lines or a general loss of firmness
  • You want to treat the upper and lower eyelids
  • Your skin is thin and there is little deep tissue descent to lift
  • You want a treatment most people find more tolerable, with cooling built in

Choose Ulthera Prime if…

  • You see heaviness and descent: early jowls, a lower brow or fullness under the chin
  • You want a sharper jawline and neck contour rather than surface smoothing
  • You value imaging-guided treatment that targets the SMAS layer precisely
  • You are comfortable with a sensation that can feel intense over bone

Can you combine them?

Yes, and it is a popular plan in Korea. Working at different depths, Ulthera lifts the foundation and Thermage tightens the skin over it. Many doctors perform both on the same day, usually Ulthera first and Thermage second, which suits a short trip to Seoul. Others space them two to four weeks apart if your skin is sensitive. Our guide to combining Thermage and Ulthera explains the reasoning, and the Seoul Signature Lifting package(from ₩1,290,000) brings both together with a soothing finish.

Cost comparison

At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, Thermage FLX starts from ₩990,000 for 300 shots on the face, and Ulthera Prime starts from ₩390,000 for 100 lines. These are not like for like: 100 lines covers a small zone such as the under-chin, while a full face and jawline usually needs several hundred, so full-face costs are closer than they first look. How our doctors decide

Your doctor first works out where the change is coming from: loose, crepey skin or descending deeper tissue. Skin thickness, facial fat, bone structure and age all shape the plan. Thin, crepey skin with little descent points to Thermage, heavier tissue with a softening jaw points to Ulthera, and a mix points to a combination.

Neither is done during pregnancy or over active skin infection, and RF is not used if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device. Tell your doctor about recent fillers or threads. See what each typically achieves on the Thermage FLX results and Ulthera Prime results pages, browse more matchups in our treatment comparisons, or book a consultation and a licensed doctor will recommend one device, or both.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers from our medical team. Still unsure? Ask a doctor or browse all patient questions .

Is Thermage or Ulthera more painful?

Most people find Ulthera more intense, especially over the jawbone and brow, because the energy is concentrated into deep points. Thermage feels like pulses of strong heat softened by cooling and vibration. Numbing cream is used for both, and your doctor adjusts the energy to your comfort.

Which lasts longer, Thermage or Ulthera?

They are similar. Thermage FLX results commonly last about 12–18 months and Ulthera about 12 months or longer. Age, skin quality, weight change and sun exposure all influence how long either one lasts.

Which is better for jowls?

Ulthera is usually the first choice for jowls because it reaches the SMAS layer that supports the lower face. Thermage helps when the jowl is partly loose skin. When both are present, combining them gives the most complete result.

Can I have both treatments during one trip to Seoul?

Yes. Many patients have Ulthera and Thermage on the same day, since neither has real downtime, and you can usually fly the next day. Your doctor confirms the order and energy settings at your consultation.

Which is better for the eye area?

Thermage FLX has a dedicated eye tip used on the upper and lower eyelids to soften crepey skin and mild hooding. Ulthera is used along the brow for a subtle brow lift rather than on the eyelids themselves.
