What causes jowls?

Jowls are soft bulges along the jawline, just to the side of the chin. They form when lower-cheek skin and fat descend and pool above a firm ligament near the jaw, breaking the smooth line from ear to chin. Several things contribute: collagen loss that makes skin less elastic, cheek fat that slides downward, extra fat stored along the lower face, and gradual bone loss in the jaw. Genetics, sun damage and weight changes play a big part, so jowls can appear in your 30s or not until much later.

How jowls are assessed

When to see a doctor first

A firm, growing or tender lump along the jaw is not a jowl and should be checked by a doctor before any cosmetic treatment. RF is not suitable with a pacemaker, and injections are avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tell your doctor about blood thinners or bleeding disorders before injectables or threads. Can jowls be fixed without surgery?

Early to moderate jowls often improve well with lifting devices, threads or fat reduction. Heavy jowls with a lot of loose skin usually need a surgical opinion, and your doctor will say so honestly.

Will fat-dissolving injections make my jowls sag?

They can if the skin is already loose. That is why your doctor checks skin quality first and often pairs fat reduction with HIFU or RF tightening.

How long do jowl treatments last?

Can I fly after jowl treatment?

Yes, after device lifting you can usually fly the next day. After injections or threads, ask your doctor; swelling may be more noticeable on a long flight but is not usually a safety issue.
