How lips change

Lips lose volume and definition gradually. The border around the lip, called the vermilion border, softens, the upper lip lengthens slightly and the corners can turn down. Lips also become drier, and fine vertical lines form above the upper lip, especially after years of sun or smoking. Some people simply have naturally thin or uneven lips and want more balance.

Common lip concerns

Most requests fall into two groups: shape and volume, covered in thin lips, and texture, such as dryness and fine lines. The Korean approach favors soft, hydrated lips in proportion with the face rather than a dramatic size change.

At your consultation, your doctor looks at the balance between your upper and lower lip, the shape of your Cupid's bow and how your lips move when you talk and smile. In many faces a lower lip slightly fuller than the upper looks most natural, so the plan may favor one lip over the other.

Filler or booster?

Lip filler is a crosslinked HA gel that holds its shape, so it adds volume and definition. A skin booster uses non-crosslinked HA that spreads evenly, so it mainly hydrates and smooths with little change in size. If you want fuller lips, filler is the right tool; if you mostly want softer, less lined lips, a booster may be enough.

Combining treatments

Filler for shape and a booster for hydration can be combined at the same visit or a few weeks apart. Lips are often assessed together with the chin and smile lines, since balance across the lower face matters more than the lips alone. See lip filler results for a realistic timeline.

Planning around your trip

Lip swelling peaks in the first 48 hours and is often uneven, so avoid booking lip filler the day before an important event or a long flight. Two or three days is usually enough to feel comfortable traveling.

Lip safety notes

  • Cold sores: if you get cold sores, tell your doctor. Injections can trigger an outbreak, and preventive medication may be suggested.
  • Swelling and bruising: lips swell more than most areas. Judge the final shape after about two weeks.
  • Blood vessels: the lip arteries run just inside the lip, so filler is injected slowly in small amounts, with hyaluronidase available.
  • Warning signs: report severe pain, pale or dusky patches, or blistering straight away.
  • Who should wait: lip filler is postponed during pregnancy, breastfeeding, active infection or recent dental work.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers from our medical team. Still unsure? Ask a doctor or browse all patient questions .

How much lip filler do I need?

Most people start with 0.5–1cc. More can be added at a later visit, and building up gradually keeps the result natural.

How long does lip swelling last?

Swelling is usually most noticeable for 2–4 days and settles within about a week. Read how long lip filler swelling lasts for day-by-day tips.

Can I drink alcohol after lip filler?

It is best to avoid alcohol for 24–48 hours, because it can increase swelling and bruising. See Can I drink alcohol after filler?

Does lip filler hurt?

Lips are sensitive, so numbing cream is applied first, and many lip fillers also contain a local anesthetic called lidocaine. Most people describe it as uncomfortable but manageable.

Can lip filler be dissolved?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if you are unhappy with the shape or if a complication occurs.
