What causes under-eye bags?

Under-eye bags are bulges or puffiness below the lower eyelid. The most common cause is fat. The eye sits on cushions of fat held back by a thin membrane, and as that membrane and the surrounding muscle weaken with age, the fat pushes forward. Genetics matters a lot, so some people have bags in their 20s. Fluid also plays a part: salty food, alcohol, allergies, poor sleep and crying can all make the area swell, especially in the morning. Loose skin and a hollow just below the bag make it look more pronounced.

How under-eye bags are assessed

Treatment options for under-eye bags

Agnes RF

Combination plans

When surgery is the better option

Large fat bags, or bags with a lot of loose skin, usually respond best to lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). Non-surgical treatments cannot safely remove a large amount of fat or excess skin. Your doctor will tell you honestly if you fall into this group, so you can seek a surgical opinion.

At-home care and prevention

Cut back on salt and alcohol in the evening, sleep with your head slightly raised and treat allergies. A cold compress in the morning helps fluid puffiness, and a regular sleep schedule helps too. Daily sunscreen and sunglasses protect the thin skin that holds everything in place.

When eye puffiness may be medical

Swelling around both eyes that appears suddenly, especially with weight gain, tiredness, changes in urine or breathlessness, should be checked by a doctor, as it can relate to the thyroid, kidneys or an allergy. Painful, red or one-sided swelling may be an infection and needs prompt care. RF is not used with a pacemaker, and treatment is postponed during pregnancy.

Can under-eye bags be removed without surgery?

Small to moderate fat bags can often be reduced with Agnes RF. Large bags or a lot of loose skin usually need lower eyelid surgery, and your doctor will say so honestly.
