Melasma Treatment Options in Korea

Quick answer: In Korea, melasma is usually treated with a series of low-energy laser or pico toning sessions every 1–2 weeks, combined with strict sun protection and, where suitable, prescription treatments from a doctor. Melasma can be lightened and controlled but tends to return, so maintenance matters. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, laser toning starts from ₩49,000 and pico toning from ₩69,000 per session (KRW, excluding VAT).

What melasma is

Melasma causes brown or gray-brown patches, usually on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip and jaw, often in a symmetrical pattern. It is more common in women and in medium skin tones, including many Asian skin types. Sun and visible light, hormones such as pregnancy or the contraceptive pill, heat and genetics all play a part. Melasma is a long-term condition: it can be lightened and kept under control, but it tends to return, especially in summer.

First, make sure it is melasma

Several types of pigmentation look similar but need different treatment. Sun spots and freckles are more sharply defined, post-inflammatory marks follow acne or irritation, and Hori's nevus, which is common in East Asian skin, often appears as gray-brown dots on the cheekbones. Your doctor examines the pattern, color and depth closely before choosing a plan. Read melasma vs freckles vs sun spots.

Treatment options

Option How it helps Typical course Caution
Laser toning Low-energy pulses gradually clear pigment 5–10+ sessions, 1–2 weeks apart Too much energy or frequency can cause patchy lightening
Pico toning Ultrashort pulses break pigment with less heat 5–10+ sessions, 1–2 weeks apart Strict sun protection between sessions
Prescription creams Reduce pigment production Daily, over months Some irritate; use only as directed
Oral medication Some doctors prescribe medicines that reduce pigment activity Months, with review Not suitable for everyone; medical screening needed
Rejuran Healer Supports a healthier, less reactive barrier About 3 sessions Supportive, not a pigment treatment alone
IPL Treats sun spots and redness that often coexist About 3 sessions Can worsen melasma in some people; used selectively

Why Korean clinics favor low-energy toning

Melasma pigment cells are easily provoked by heat. Strong lasers can make melasma darker, so Korean clinics use gentle, repeated toning instead, adjusting energy to your skin at each visit. Some doctors also pause or soften treatment after a flare or a sunny holiday, then resume once the skin is calm. Compare pico toning vs laser toning, and see how many pico toning sessions you need.

A typical melasma plan

When What happens
Weeks 0–2 Assessment, daily tinted sunscreen, first toning session, prescription options if suitable
Weeks 2–12 Toning every 1–2 weeks; a skin booster if the barrier needs support
Around month 3 Review progress and adjust energy, interval or medicines
Ongoing Maintenance every one to three months, more often in summer

What makes melasma worse

  • Sun and strong visible light, including through windows
  • Heat from saunas, hot yoga or cooking over high heat
  • Hormonal changes, such as pregnancy or starting the contraceptive pill
  • Harsh scrubs, strong peels and irritating products
  • Aggressive laser or IPL settings

Daily sun protection is the foundation of every plan; read sun protection after pico toning.

Home care that supports treatment

  • A gentle cleanser and a simple, fragrance-free moisturizer
  • Tinted broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning, reapplied outdoors
  • Brightening ingredients such as niacinamide or azelaic acid, if your doctor agrees
  • No scrubs, strong peels or at-home devices that heat the skin

Realistic expectations

Melasma lightens gradually over months, not days. A good result usually means patches that are lighter, softer-edged and easier to cover with light makeup, rather than skin that never shows pigment again. Some darkening in summer is common even with good care. Take your own photos in the same light every few weeks so you can see progress that is hard to notice day to day.

Treating melasma on a trip

You can start a plan in Seoul and continue at home. One or two toning sessions per trip lighten pigment gradually, and your doctor can give you written settings, prescriptions where appropriate and a home routine. The Pigment Clear Package, from ₩259,000, combines pico toning, IPL and LDM; your doctor may adjust it if melasma is your main concern.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Melasma often appears or darkens in pregnancy and may fade afterward. Most lasers and many medicines are postponed during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and sun protection becomes the main treatment. Your doctor will advise you.

When to see a doctor promptly

Have any new, changing, irregular or bleeding dark spot checked by a doctor, rather than treating it as melasma. Our melasma concern page covers causes and options in more depth. To build your plan, book a melasma assessment or explore other skin concerns.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers from our medical team. Still unsure? Ask a doctor or browse all patient questions .

Can melasma be cured?

Melasma can be lightened and controlled, but there is no permanent cure. It tends to return with sun, heat or hormonal changes, so most people need maintenance treatment and daily sun protection.

Is pico toning or laser toning better for melasma?

Both work well as low-energy series. Pico toning uses shorter pulses with less heat, which some doctors prefer for sensitive pigment, while laser toning costs a little less. Your doctor will recommend one based on your skin.

How many sessions does melasma need?

Most people need eight to ten or more toning sessions about one to two weeks apart, followed by maintenance. Progress is gradual, and results vary between people.

Can IPL make melasma worse?

It can in some people, because heat may stimulate pigment. Doctors use IPL selectively when sun spots or redness coexist with melasma, and usually after the melasma is under control.

Can I treat melasma during a short trip to Seoul?

You can start. One or two sessions plus a home plan with sun protection is a sensible beginning, and you can continue with a doctor at home or on your next visit.
