Pico Toning vs IPL Photofacial: Which Is Right for You?

Quick answer: Pico toning uses gentle picosecond laser passes over a series of 5–10 sessions to even tone and manage melasma with no real downtime. IPL photofacial uses broad-spectrum light to fade distinct sun spots, freckles and redness in about 3 sessions, with spots darkening and flaking for 5–7 days. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, pico toning starts from ₩69,000 and IPL from ₩89,000 per full-face session.

Pico toning vs IPL photofacial at a glance

Both treatments target pigment, but they suit different kinds. Pico toning is a gentle, repeated laser treatment for diffuse pigment and melasma. An IPL photofacial uses intense pulsed light to clear distinct brown spots and diffuse redness in fewer, stronger sessions. Matching the treatment to your pigment type matters more than the device.

Feature Pico Toning IPL Photofacial
Technology Picosecond laser, commonly Nd:YAG at 1064 nm Intense pulsed light: filtered broad-spectrum light, not a laser
How it works / target depth Ultra-short pulses break up pigment with little heat Light absorbed by melanin and hemoglobin heats spots and small vessels
Best for Melasma, uneven tone, dullness, post-acne brown marks Sun spots, freckles, diffuse redness
Comfort Light snapping; usually no numbing Warm flashes like a rubber band snap; cooling gel used
Downtime None to mild redness Spots darken and flake for 5–7 days
Sessions A series of 5–10, about 1–2 weeks apart About 3, roughly 3–4 weeks apart
Results appear Gradually over several sessions Spots fade as flakes shed within about a week
Results last Maintain with periodic sessions and sun care Treated spots stay lighter; new spots can form with sun exposure
Price from at Dernia ₩69,000 (1 session, full face) ₩89,000 (full face)

How pico toning works

A picosecond laser fires pulses lasting trillionths of a second, breaking pigment into fine particles mainly through a pressure effect rather than heat. In toning mode, the doctor makes several low-energy passes across the face. Because it heats the skin very little, it is suitable for melasma and for skin that tends to darken after inflammation, which is common in Asian skin. Progress is gradual, so a series is needed.

How an IPL photofacial works

IPL is not a laser. It delivers flashes of filtered, broad-spectrum light that are absorbed by melanin in brown spots and by hemoglobin in small surface vessels. The targeted spots heat up, darken over a day or two and then flake away, while redness fades as vessels shrink. Because it treats spots and redness in one pass, IPL is efficient for sun-damaged skin. Its heat can aggravate melasma, so doctors use it cautiously or not at all when melasma is present. Filters let the doctor choose which wavelengths reach the skin, and settings are adjusted for your skin tone, with extra caution for darker skin types.

Choose pico toning if…

  • You have melasma or diffuse, patchy pigment
  • Your skin darkens easily after irritation
  • You need no visible downtime during your trip
  • You can attend a series of sessions

Choose IPL if…

  • You have distinct sun spots or freckles from sun exposure
  • You also have diffuse redness or small visible vessels
  • You accept a week of darkened, flaking spots
  • You want visible clearing in fewer sessions

Can you combine them?

Yes, for the right skin. A common plan uses IPL to clear distinct spots and redness, then pico toning to even out the overall tone, with spacing set by your doctor. IPL usually comes first, because clearing distinct spots early lets the toning series focus on the remaining overall tone. Our Pigment Clear Package(from ₩259,000) brings pico toning, IPL and soothing LDM together.

How our doctors decide

The most important step is identifying your pigment type. Melasma and diffuse patches point to pico toning; distinct sun spots, freckles and redness point to IPL. Many people have a mix, which is why combined plans are common. If you are visiting Seoul once, IPL's fewer sessions may fit better, but only if melasma is not part of the picture. Our guide to pigmentation types explains the differences.

Both are postponed with a fresh tan, active infection, recent isotretinoin use or during pregnancy; read whether you can have laser with a tan. Daily sunscreen protects your results. Browse more comparisons, or book a consultation and a licensed doctor will match the treatment to your pigment.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers from our medical team. Still unsure? Ask a doctor or browse all patient questions .

Is IPL or pico toning better for melasma?

Pico toning is usually preferred for melasma because it uses very little heat. IPL's heat can aggravate melasma, so doctors use it cautiously or avoid it when melasma is present.

Which is better for freckles and sun spots?

IPL is often efficient for distinct freckles and sun spots, clearing them in a few sessions. Pico toning can also lighten them gradually, and a pico spot treatment may be used for individual spots.

What does IPL downtime look like?

Treated spots darken and may look like fine coffee grounds for five to seven days before flaking off. You can wear makeup over them, but avoid picking and use sunscreen.

Can IPL treat redness?

Yes. IPL targets hemoglobin as well as melanin, so it can reduce diffuse redness and small visible vessels. Persistent vessels may need a dedicated vascular laser.

Can I combine both?

Yes. Many plans clear distinct spots with IPL first and then even the overall tone with pico toning. Your doctor will set the spacing.
