IPL Photofacial Results: Timeline and What to Expect

Quick answer: After an IPL photofacial, brown spots darken over 1–3 days and then flake off within about 5–7 days, leaving brighter skin. Redness and small visible vessels fade more gradually over a few weeks. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, IPL is usually planned as about three sessions spaced 3–4 weeks apart for the clearest, most even result.

IPL photofacial results timeline

Intense pulsed light (IPL) uses a broad spectrum of filtered light. Brown pigment and red blood vessels absorb that light and are heated, which causes sun spots to darken and shed and small vessels to fade. Unlike toning, IPL produces a visible change within a week, but it also has a short, visible healing phase you should plan around.

When What you may notice What is happening
Day 0 Warmth and redness; spots look slightly darker Pigment and vessels absorb light energy
Days 1–3 Spots darken further, like fine coffee grounds; mild swelling possible Treated pigment rises toward the surface
Days 5–7 Darkened spots flake off; skin looks brighter Pigment is shed with surface skin
Weeks 2–4 Redness and flushing gradually reduce Treated vessels are cleared
After 3 sessions Clearer, more even skin with less redness Cumulative improvement

What improves and what doesn't

Usually improves

Usually does not change

  • Melasma, which IPL can worsen
  • Deep pigment and some birthmarks
  • Acne scars and texture
  • Wrinkles and sagging

Factors that influence your results

  • Pigment type: sun spots and freckles respond well; melasma needs gentler approaches. See pigmentation types explained.
  • Skin tone and tan: tanned skin absorbs more light and raises the risk of burns or marks; read can I get laser treatment with a tan.
  • Number of sessions: about three sessions usually give a clearer result than one.
  • Redness type: fine diffuse redness responds well; larger vessels may need a vascular laser.
  • Sun protection: new spots form quickly without it.
  • Area treated: the face usually sheds darkened spots fastest; the chest and hands can take a little longer.

How to maximize and maintain your results

For mixed pigment, the Pigment Clear Package combines IPL for spots with pico toning for diffuse pigment. If deeper redness or vessels are the main issue, compare Excel V laser vs IPL photofacial. For pigment questions, see pico toning vs IPL.

  • Let darkened spots flake off naturally; don't scrub or pick.
  • Use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer, and SPF 50 daily.
  • Avoid saunas, hot baths and intense exercise for a day or two.
  • Makeup is usually fine the next day; see when you can wear makeup after laser.

Realistic expectations and when to repeat

IPL gives a visible, satisfying change, but the darkened-spot phase lasts about a week, so schedule it early in your trip or well before photos. About three sessions usually give the best overall result, and an annual maintenance session helps if you get regular sun exposure. Our medical team's IPL photofacial review covers value, and pricing is on the IPL photofacial price page. Prices are in Korean won (KRW), exclude 10% VAT, and are confirmed at your consultation.

Tracking your progress

Because spots darken before they fade, photos taken in the first week can look worse than before treatment. Use the one-week photo only to track shedding, and judge the result from photos taken at least two weeks after each session.

  • Take photos before treatment, at one week and before each later session.
  • Use consistent daylight; warm indoor light hides redness.
  • Photograph bare skin, including close-ups of spots and red areas.
  • Keep camera distance and angle the same each time.

If your results aren't what you expected

Judge the result two to four weeks after each session. If spots did not darken or shed, redness persists, or you notice any blistering or lighter patches, contact Dernia with your photos. Your doctor may adjust settings, recommend more sessions or choose a different device. Browse our other results guides to compare options.

How long do spots stay dark after IPL?

Treated spots usually darken over one to three days and flake off within about five to seven days. It can take a little longer on the body.

How many IPL sessions do I need?

About three sessions, spaced three to four weeks apart, is a common plan for the clearest result.

Can IPL treat melasma?

IPL is generally not recommended for melasma, because heat can make it worse. Gentler options such as pico toning are usually preferred.

Can I have IPL if I have a tan?

No. Tanned skin absorbs more light and increases the risk of burns or pigment changes. Wait until your tan fades and avoid sun before treatment.
