IPL Photofacial Review: Is It Worth It?

Quick answer: An IPL photofacial is worth it if you have sun spots, freckles or diffuse redness on fair to medium skin and want visible clearing in about three sessions. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong it starts from ₩89,000 for the full face (KRW, excluding VAT). Treated spots darken and flake for five to seven days, and IPL is not suitable for melasma.

Our take on the IPL photofacial

This is our medical team's honest assessment of the IPL photofacial. It is an editorial review by our doctors, not a summary of patient reviews, and it explains when IPL is the right choice at Dernia Clinic Myeongdong and when a laser is safer. Our other assessments are on our expert reviews page.

An IPL photofacial uses intense pulsed light, a broad spectrum of light filtered to target brown pigment and red blood vessels at the same time. It is not a laser, but in the right skin it works efficiently on sun damage. In our doctors' view it is one of the most cost-effective treatments for sun spots, freckles and diffuse redness. The important caveats are that it is the wrong tool for melasma, it needs care in darker or tanned skin, and treated spots look darker before they fade.

Pros

  • Treats brown and red together. Sun spots, freckles and diffuse redness improve in the same session.
  • Few sessions. About three sessions three to four weeks apart give a clear improvement for many people.
  • Affordable. The price per session is low for the change it can make.
  • Beyond the face. It works on the neck, chest and hands, where sun damage often shows.
  • Quick. A full-face session takes about 20 minutes.

Cons

  • Visible darkening. Treated spots turn darker and flake off over five to seven days, which can be noticeable on a trip.
  • Not for melasma. IPL heat can worsen melasma, so it must be diagnosed first.
  • Not for tans or darker skin. The risk of burns and pigment changes is higher; a laser is usually safer.
  • Sun spots can return. New spots appear with ongoing sun exposure, so protection is essential.
  • Less precise than lasers. Stubborn individual spots or vessels may need targeted laser.

Who IPL is best for

Our doctors recommend it for people with fair to medium skin who have sun spots, freckles, a generally sun-damaged look or diffuse facial redness, and who can allow a week for spots to flake. It is part of our Pigment Clear Package and works well for travelers who visit at the start of a longer stay.

Who should consider something else

  • Melasma or pigment-prone skin: gentle picosecond toning is safer. See Pico toning vs IPL photofacial.
  • Visible broken vessels or red acne marks: a vascular laser is more precise. See Excel V laser vs IPL photofacial.
  • Tanned skin: wait until the tan fades. Read can I get laser treatment with a tan.
  • Darker skin types: pico toning or carefully chosen laser settings carry less risk.
  • Medical reasons: avoid it during pregnancy if advised, with light-sensitive conditions or medicines, active infection, or recent isotretinoin use. Your doctor checks your medicines and skin type.

Comfort and what it feels like

A cool gel is applied, and each flash feels like a warm snap from a rubber band. Numbing is rarely needed. Afterward the skin may be pink for a few hours, and treated spots soon look darker, like coffee grounds. They flake away over five to seven days; do not pick them. Wear sunscreen daily and avoid saunas and hot baths for a couple of days. Our laser and light aftercare guide has the details.

Value for money

IPL at Dernia starts from ₩89,000 for the full face; the neck, chest or hands are priced separately, as shown on the IPL photofacial price page. Prices are in Korean won (KRW), exclude 10% VAT, and are confirmed at your consultation. A three-session course costs less than many single premium treatments, so for the right skin the value is very good.

Our verdict

IPL is worth it for sun spots, freckles and diffuse redness in fair to medium skin, if you can allow a week of darkening and flaking. It is not worth it, and can be counterproductive, for melasma, tanned skin or darker skin types. See the IPL photofacial results timeline, then book a consultation so your doctor can confirm your pigment type before choosing light or laser.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers from our medical team. Still unsure? Ask a doctor or browse all patient questions .

Is IPL worth it?

It is worth it for sun spots, freckles and diffuse redness in fair to medium skin, usually over about three sessions. It is not suitable for melasma or tanned skin.

Why do my spots look darker after IPL?

Darkening is a normal sign that the pigment has absorbed the light. The spots usually flake off within five to seven days. Do not scrub or pick them.

Can IPL treat melasma?

No. IPL can worsen melasma because of the heat it creates. Gentle picosecond or Nd:YAG toning is the safer approach for melasma.

How many IPL sessions do I need?

About three sessions three to four weeks apart are typical for sun damage and redness. Maintenance once or twice a year helps with new spots.

IPL or pico toning: which is better?

IPL clears surface sun spots and redness faster in suitable skin, while pico toning is safer for melasma and pigment-prone skin. Your doctor chooses after diagnosing your pigment.
