Aftercare After Laser Treatment: Day-by-Day

Quick answer: After laser treatment, cleanse gently with lukewarm water, moisturize often, use broad-spectrum sunscreen every day and avoid heat, scrubs, retinoids and acids until skin has fully settled. Recovery ranges from a few hours after pico toning to about 5–7 days after CO2 fractional laser. Dernia Clinic Myeongdong gives written aftercare for your specific laser before you leave.

  • Toning lasers: None to mild redness for a few hours
  • IPL: Spots darken and flake for about 5–7 days
  • Pico fractional: About 1–3 days of redness
  • CO2 fractional: About 5–7 days of redness and crusting
  • Every laser: Gentle cleanser, moisturizer and daily sunscreen
  • Avoid at first: Saunas, scrubs, retinoids, acids and picking

First, know which kind of laser you had

Aftercare depends on how deeply the laser worked. Low-energy toning barely disturbs the surface, while ablative lasers create tiny wounds that need several days to heal. Check your aftercare sheet, or ask your doctor which category applies to you.

Laser type Examples Typical recovery Makeup usually OK
Toning Pico toning, laser toning None to mild redness for a few hours Same evening or next morning
Light-based pigment IPL photofacial Spots darken and flake for 5–7 days Next day, applied gently
Vascular Excel V Mild redness for 1–2 days Next day
Non-ablative fractional Pico fractional 1–3 days of redness After 1–2 days
Ablative fractional CO2 fractional 5–7 days of redness and crusting Once crusts have shed, about a week
Spot removal Mole and skin tag removal Healing patch for 5–10 days Around, not over, the patch

Your day-by-day timeline

Day 0: treatment day

  • Expect warmth and pinkness; a cool compress helps.
  • Apply the soothing cream or moisturizer you were given.
  • Skip makeup until your doctor says it is fine.
  • Avoid saunas, hot baths, intense exercise and alcohol tonight.
  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase.

Days 1–3

  • Cleanse morning and night with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water; pat dry.
  • Moisturize often, and apply sunscreen every morning.
  • After IPL, treated spots darken; this is expected.
  • After CO2, keep treated areas moist with the ointment prescribed, and never pick crusts.

Days 4–7

  • Flaking or fine peeling is normal; let it shed on its own.
  • CO2 crusts usually lift during this window, leaving pink new skin.
  • No scrubs, peels or cleansing brushes yet.

Weeks 2–4

  • Reintroduce actives one at a time, usually vitamin C first, then retinoids, once skin feels completely calm.
  • Keep sun protection strict, especially through a series.
  • Return for your next session at the interval your doctor recommends.

What is normal in the first week

Mild redness, warmth like a light sunburn, slight swelling for a day or two, especially around the eyes, and temporary dryness are all normal. After pico fractional, skin can feel like fine sandpaper as tiny micro-crusts form and shed. After IPL, freckles and sun spots look darker before they fade. These changes mean the skin is responding, not that something has gone wrong.

Sleep, hydration and lifestyle

  • After CO2 laser, sleeping with your head slightly raised for the first night or two can reduce swelling.
  • Drink plenty of water and keep alcohol to a minimum for a few days.
  • Smoking slows healing; avoid it if you can, especially after resurfacing.
  • Keep hair products, phones and hands away from treated skin.

Products to use and to pause

Use Pause until skin settles
Gentle, fragrance-free cleanser Retinol, retinoids and tretinoin
Plain moisturizer with ceramides or panthenol AHA, BHA and other exfoliating acids
Broad-spectrum sunscreen, often mineral Scrubs, peeling gels and cleansing brushes
Prescribed ointment after CO2 High-strength vitamin C and fragranced products

Sun protection is part of the treatment

Laser-treated skin reacts more easily to UV and visible light, which can trigger new pigmentation, especially in medium to deeper skin tones. Use sunscreen daily, reapply outdoors, and add a hat and sunglasses. Read sun protection after pico toning and laser, and avoid tanning between sessions.

Aftercare during a series

Toning lasers are usually repeated every one to two weeks. Keep the same gentle routine between sessions, and tell your doctor before the next one about any irritation, new medications, a recent tan or a cold sore. If you are only in Seoul for part of a course, ask for written settings and dates so a doctor at home can continue. Our guide to how many pico toning sessions you need explains typical courses.

When to contact the clinic

  • Blisters, oozing or crusts on a toning or IPL area
  • Pain that increases rather than settles
  • Spreading redness, warmth, pus or fever
  • A cold sore outbreak in or near the treated area
  • Dark patches appearing a few weeks after treatment

Most of these are manageable when caught early. See normal side effects vs when to contact us.

Traveling after laser

You can usually fly after toning the next day. Cabin air is dry, so moisturize on board and close the window blind on day flights. After CO2 or fractional lasers, allow the timeline above before you fly if you can. See can I have laser treatment right before a flight?
