Can I get laser treatment with a tan?
Quick answer: Usually not with a fresh or active tan. Tanned skin holds more melanin, which absorbs laser and IPL light and raises the risk of burns, blisters and dark or light patches. Most doctors advise waiting about 2–4 weeks for a tan to fade first. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, your doctor checks your skin and may suggest a gentler laser, lower settings or a different treatment.
- Fresh tan: Most lasers and IPL are postponed
- Typical wait: About 2–4 weeks after sun exposure
- Higher-risk treatments: IPL and higher-energy lasers
- Self-tanner: Let it fade completely before treatment
- Possible risks: Burns, blisters, dark patches or light patches
- Natural deeper skin: Different from a tan; doctors adjust device and settings
The detailed answer
Lasers and intense pulsed light work by targeting color in the skin. IPL photofacial aims at brown pigment and redness; pigment lasers aim at melanin. When your skin is tanned, the whole surface contains more melanin, so energy meant for a sun spot is also absorbed by the surrounding skin. That raises the risk of burns, blisters and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark patches), and sometimes hypopigmentation (light patches) that can last for months.
A tan also makes treatment less effective. Settings have to be lowered for safety, and the contrast between spots and the background skin is reduced.
A tan is not the same as darker skin
People with naturally deeper skin tones can often have laser treatment safely with the right device and settings, such as low-energy pico toning. The concern with a tan is that it is recent, changing and often uneven, so it is harder to predict how the skin will react.
| Situation | What doctors usually advise |
|---|---|
| Fresh tan or recent sunburn | Postpone most lasers and IPL; wait about 2–4 weeks |
| Self-tanner or spray tan | Let it fade completely first |
| Fading tan | Gentler settings or a test area may be possible |
| Natural deeper skin tone | Treatment is often possible with suitable devices |
Planning around a beach holiday
If Seoul is part of a longer trip, put sun-heavy destinations after your laser treatments, not before. Treated skin is also sun-sensitive for weeks afterward, so protect it carefully; see sun protection after laser. What we recommend
Be honest at consultation about recent sun exposure, tanning beds or self-tanner. If you are tanned, the doctor may suggest skin boosters or other light-free treatments now and lasers on a later visit. Compare light-based options in pico toning vs IPL, browse all treatments, see the IPL photofacial price guide, or book a consultation so your doctor can check your skin first.
