Freckle Treatment in Seoul

Quick answer: Freckles can be lightened with an IPL photofacial or pico toning, though they tend to return with sun exposure. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, IPL starts from ₩89,000 and usually needs around three sessions, while pico toning from ₩69,000 suits darker skin or freckles mixed with melasma. Autumn and winter are the best times to treat, and daily sunscreen keeps results longer.

What causes freckles?

Freckles, which doctors call ephelides, are small, flat, light-brown spots that usually appear in childhood on the cheeks, nose and shoulders. They are mainly genetic and are especially common in people with fair skin, though many East Asian people have them too. Sun exposure triggers pigment cells to produce more melanin, so freckles darken and multiply in summer and fade in winter. This is different from sun spots, which build up over years and do not fade with the seasons. Freckles are harmless, and many people like them, so treatment is purely a personal choice. People with many freckles also tend to burn easily, which makes sun protection doubly important.

How freckles are assessed

At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, your doctor examines your spots to confirm they are freckles and not something that needs a different approach. Common look-alikes include:

  • Sun spots: larger, darker spots from long-term sun damage; see sun spots
  • Melasma: blurry patches that can worsen with strong light treatments; see melasma
  • Hori's nevus: bluish-brown spots on the cheeks, common in East Asian skin, which sit deeper and need a different laser

Your skin type and any recent tan also affect which treatment is safest. Your doctor may take baseline photos so you can compare results between sessions. Read pigmentation types explained for more detail.

Treatment options for freckles

IPL Photofacial

An IPL photofacial treats freckles across the whole face with filtered pulsed light. Spots darken and flake away over 5–7 days. Your doctor chooses it for fair to medium skin with many freckles, especially when there is also some redness. About three sessions a few weeks apart usually give a clear improvement. It is not suitable on tanned skin, so treat when your skin is at its lightest.

Pico Toning

Pico toning uses a low-energy picosecond laser to lighten pigment gradually with little or no visible flaking. Your doctor chooses it for medium or darker skin, for freckles mixed with melasma, or when you need to look presentable right after treatment. Each session lightens freckles a little more, and most people need several sessions a few weeks apart.

Combination plans

A popular approach is IPL to clear most freckles, followed by pico toning to even out the remaining tone. Our Pigment Clear package combines both with LDM soothing. If redness or small vessels also bother you, IPL treats those at the same time. Compare the technologies in pico toning vs IPL.

Why freckles come back

Treatment lightens existing freckles, but it does not change your genes. With sun exposure, the same pigment cells can produce new freckles. That is why results last longest when you treat in the cooler months and protect your skin daily afterward. Our guide to planning treatments by season explains the timing.

At-home care and prevention

  • Wear SPF 50 daily and reapply every two to three hours outdoors.
  • Use a hat and sunglasses in strong sun, including in spring.
  • Vitamin C and niacinamide serums can help keep tone even.
  • Avoid tanning beds completely.

Planning treatment during a trip to Seoul

IPL leaves darkened spots for about a week, which makeup covers well, so plan photos accordingly. Avoid tanning for several weeks before and after treatment. Pico toning has little downtime and suits short trips. If you visit in summer, your doctor may suggest pico toning rather than IPL, or a lighter plan with strict sun protection. Book a consultation to check your skin type and plan your sessions.

When to see a doctor

A spot that looks different from your other freckles, changes in size or color, bleeds or itches should be examined. A new dark spot that appears in adulthood is less likely to be a freckle. Suspicious spots are never lasered; they are referred for a biopsy instead. People with many freckles have more sun-sensitive skin, so regular skin checks are sensible.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers from our medical team. Still unsure? Ask a doctor or browse all patient questions .

Will my freckles come back after treatment?

Treated freckles fade well, but new ones can form with sun exposure because freckles are genetic. Daily sunscreen and treating in the cooler months help results last.

When is the best time of year to treat freckles?

Autumn and winter, when UV is lower and freckles are not being stimulated. Treating just before summer gives the sun a chance to bring them back quickly.

Is IPL or pico toning better for freckles?

IPL often clears freckles faster on fair to medium skin. Pico toning is gentler and better for darker skin or when melasma is also present.

Does freckle treatment hurt?

IPL feels like a warm snap against the skin, and pico toning like light prickling. Both are quick, and a cooling gel or numbing cream can be used if needed.

Can I treat freckles if I have a tan?

Usually not with IPL, because tanned skin absorbs more light and is more likely to react. See can I get laser treatment with a tan.
