Dermal Filler Results: Timeline and What to Expect

Quick answer: Hyaluronic acid dermal filler gives visible volume immediately. Mild swelling usually settles in 1–3 days, and the filler softens and integrates over 2–4 weeks, which is when you see the true result. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, filler results typically last about 6–18 months, depending on the area treated and the product used.

Dermal filler results timeline

Hyaluronic acid (HA) filler is a gel that adds volume and support where it is placed. Unlike collagen stimulators, the change is visible straight away. What changes over the next few weeks is how the filler looks and feels as swelling resolves and the gel settles into the tissue.

When What you may notice What is happening
Day 0 Immediate volume; mild swelling, tenderness or small bruises HA gel is placed at the planned depth
Days 1–3 Swelling peaks, then settles; the area may feel firm Normal inflammatory response
Week 1 Bruises fade; shape looks more natural HA draws in water and softens
Weeks 2–4 Settled, natural-feeling result Filler integrates with surrounding tissue
Months 6–18 Gradual loss of volume HA is slowly broken down by the body

Typical longevity by area

Area Typical duration
Lips About 6–12 months
Nasolabial folds About 6–12 months
Under-eyes About 9–12 months, sometimes longer
Cheeks, chin and temples About 12–18 months

Areas that move more tend to break filler down faster. For specific areas, see our guides to lip filler results and under-eye filler results. The treatment itself is described on our dermal filler page.

What improves and what doesn't

Usually improves

  • Volume loss in the cheeks and temples
  • Deep smile lines and marionette lines
  • Chin projection and jawline definition
  • Nose profile, without surgery

Usually does not change

  • Skin quality, pores and texture
  • Muscle-driven expression lines, which respond better to Botox
  • Heavy sagging, where adding volume alone can look unnatural
  • Pigmentation

Factors that influence your results

  • Product choice: firmer gels suit structural areas, softer gels suit lips and fine areas. See HA filler brands used in Korea.
  • Amount: filler is priced per cc, and the right volume depends on your anatomy and goals.
  • Area and movement: mobile areas break filler down faster.
  • Metabolism: some people break down HA more quickly than others.
  • Technique: depth, placement and conservative volumes give the most natural look.

How to maximize and maintain your results

Filler and Botox do different jobs and are often used together; see Botox vs dermal filler. If you prefer a gradual, collagen-based approach, compare dermal filler vs Sculptra.

  • Avoid pressing, massaging or sleeping on the treated area for a few days.
  • Skip saunas, intense exercise and alcohol for a day or two; read can I drink alcohol after filler.
  • Use a cold compress gently for swelling.
  • Avoid dental work for about two weeks if possible.

Realistic expectations and when to repeat

Good filler looks like rested, well-supported features, not obvious volume. A conservative first treatment with a review two weeks later is a sensible approach. Most people top up when they notice volume fading, often with less product than the first time. Current options are on the dermal filler price page. Prices are in Korean won (KRW), exclude 10% VAT, and are confirmed at your consultation.

Tracking your progress

Filler changes are easy to misjudge in the mirror, so a consistent photo record helps both you and your doctor.

  • Take photos before treatment, at two weeks and every few months.
  • Use the same window light, time of day and camera height.
  • Take front, 45-degree and profile views with a relaxed face.
  • Ignore day-one photos; swelling exaggerates volume.

If your results aren't what you expected

Judge the result at two weeks. Small asymmetries or a lump can often be adjusted, and HA filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if needed, so contact Dernia with your photos for a review. Severe or increasing pain, skin that turns pale, gray or mottled, or any change in vision needs urgent attention; contact us immediately. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers from our medical team. Still unsure? Ask a doctor or browse all patient questions .

When will I see dermal filler results?

You see the change immediately, but the true result appears once swelling settles and the filler integrates, usually after two to four weeks.

How long does filler last?

About 6–18 months, depending on the area and product. Lips and mobile areas tend to fade sooner, while cheeks and chin last longer.

Why does my filler feel firm or lumpy?

Firmness and small irregularities are common in the first one to two weeks while swelling settles. If a lump persists beyond that, contact the clinic for a review.

Can filler be removed?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if it needs to be corrected or removed.

Can I fly after filler?

Most people can fly within a day or two. Swelling may feel slightly more noticeable on a flight, so stay hydrated and avoid pressing on the area.
