Pico Toning Results: Timeline and What to Expect

Quick answer: Pico toning works gradually. Skin often looks brighter within days of the first session, tone becomes more even after about 3–5 sessions, and pigment such as melasma usually needs a series of 5–10 sessions spaced 1–2 weeks apart. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, results are maintained with strict sun protection and occasional top-up sessions.

Pico toning results timeline

Pico toning uses a picosecond laser at low energy across the whole face. The ultra-short pulses break pigment into tiny particles that the body clears gradually, with little heat to irritate the skin. Each session makes a small change, so results build across a series rather than appearing after one visit.

When What you may notice What is happening
Day 0 Mild redness or warmth for a few hours; a light glow Pigment is fragmented by picosecond pulses
Days 1–7 Brighter skin; some spots may look slightly darker before fading The body begins clearing pigment particles
After 3–5 sessions More even tone; freckles and dull patches lighter Cumulative pigment clearance
After 5–10 sessions Clearer, brighter skin; melasma usually lighter Course complete; your doctor reviews progress
Months afterward Results hold with sun care; some pigment may return Plan maintenance as advised

What improves and what doesn't

Usually improves

  • Melasma, gradually and with maintenance
  • Freckles and light sun spots
  • Uneven, dull or patchy tone
  • Brown post-acne marks

Usually does not change

  • Deep or very dark single spots, which may need a targeted pigment laser
  • Redness and visible vessels
  • Acne scars and deep texture
  • Wrinkles and sagging

Factors that influence your results

  • Type of pigment: freckles and sun spots often lighten faster than melasma, which is deeper and hormone-sensitive. Our guide to melasma vs freckles vs sun spots explains the difference.
  • Sun exposure: UV and heat can undo progress quickly.
  • Consistency: keeping sessions on schedule matters more than any single session.
  • Hormones: pregnancy, contraceptives and other hormonal changes can drive melasma.
  • Settings: gentle, well-spaced sessions reduce the risk of rebound darkening or light spots.

How to maximize and maintain your results

Sun protection is the single most important factor. Read our guide to sun protection after pico toning and the list of what to avoid after pico toning. For mixed pigment and redness, the Pigment Clear Package combines pico toning with IPL and a calming LDM session.

  • Use broad-spectrum SPF 50 every day and reapply outdoors.
  • Wear a hat and avoid saunas and hot yoga, as heat can trigger melasma.
  • Use a gentle, hydrating routine and pause strong acids for a few days.
  • Ask your doctor about a brightening skincare routine between sessions.

Realistic expectations and when to repeat

Pico toning gives steady, cumulative improvement. Melasma can be managed and lightened but is rarely cured, and it may return with sun, heat or hormonal changes. After a course, many people have occasional maintenance sessions. If you're weighing it against an older toning method, see pico toning vs laser toning. Our medical team's pico toning review covers value, and per-session and course pricing is on the pico toning price page. Prices are in Korean won (KRW), exclude 10% VAT, and are confirmed at your consultation.

Tracking your progress

Pigment changes are subtle session to session, so take photos before your first session and before every second or third session.

  • Use the same window light and time of day, without flash or warm bulbs.
  • Photograph freshly cleansed skin with no tinted sunscreen or makeup.
  • Take front and both side views, plus close-ups of pigmented areas.
  • Keep camera settings the same; turn off automatic beauty filters.

If your results aren't what you expected

Judge progress after at least five sessions. If pigment is not improving, looks darker or you notice lighter spots, contact Dernia with your photos so your doctor can review the settings, spacing and diagnosis. Some pigment, such as deeper melasma or certain birthmarks, needs a different approach. See our other results guides for alternatives.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers from our medical team. Still unsure? Ask a doctor or browse all patient questions .

How many pico toning sessions until I see results?

Many people see brighter skin after the first few sessions and a more even tone after three to five. Melasma usually needs five to ten sessions.

How often should I have pico toning?

Sessions are usually spaced one to two weeks apart during a course. Your doctor adjusts the spacing to your skin and pigment type.

Will melasma come back after pico toning?

It can. Melasma is a chronic condition triggered by sun, heat and hormones. Daily sun protection and occasional maintenance sessions help keep it under control.

Can I wear makeup after pico toning?

Most people can wear makeup the next day, and sometimes the same day if skin is calm. Use gentle products and remove them carefully.

Can I do pico toning before a flight?

Usually yes, as there is little downtime. Use sunscreen on the plane near the window and keep your skin hydrated.
