FAQ

How often should I do pico toning?

Quick answer: Usually every 1–2 weeks for a course of 5–10 sessions, then maintenance every 1–3 months. Pico toning uses low, gentle energy, so results come from repetition rather than one strong session. At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, doctors may space sessions further apart for melasma-prone or sensitive skin, because over-treating pigment can backfire. Each full-face session starts from ₩69,000.

The detailed answer

Pico toning uses a picosecond laser at low, evenly spread energy to break pigment into tiny particles that the body clears gradually. Each session does a little, so brightening builds over a course. That approach matters most for melasma, which can flare if the skin is heated too aggressively.

Goal Typical schedule
General brightening and dullness About 5 sessions, every 1–2 weeks
Melasma or stubborn uneven tone 8–10 sessions or more, every 1–2 weeks at gentle settings
Post-acne brown marks 5–10 sessions, every 1–2 weeks
Maintenance Once every 1–3 months

Why more often is not always better

It is tempting to squeeze sessions closer together during a short trip, but toning too often or too strongly can cause irritation, rebound darkening or small light patches (hypopigmentation). A careful doctor adjusts energy and spacing to your skin type and response. Our guide how many pico toning sessions do you need? explains how plans are built.

Pico toning on a short trip

If you are in Seoul for a week or two, one or two sessions can give some visible brightening. A full course usually needs more time, so many visitors continue on later trips or with a qualified doctor at home. Some combine toning with IPL for sun spots (compare them in pico toning vs IPL) or choose the Pigment Clear Package.

Sessions may need to wait if you have a fresh tan, an active skin infection or have recently taken oral isotretinoin, so mention these at consultation. See laser treatment with a tan for why timing matters.

What we recommend

Start with a consultation so the doctor can identify your pigment type, because melasma, freckles and sun spots respond differently; you can read about them on our skin concerns pages. Use sunscreen daily between sessions, since UV exposure undoes progress quickly. Pico toning at Dernia starts from ₩69,000 per full-face session. Prices are in Korean won (KRW), exclude 10% VAT, and are confirmed at your consultation. See the pico toning price guide and pico toning results timeline, or book a consultation to plan your course.

Can I do pico toning every week?

Weekly sessions are common for some goals, as long as your skin tolerates them well. Your doctor may space them out if you notice redness lasting more than a day, extra sensitivity or any darkening.

How soon will I see results?

Many people notice brighter, more even skin after 2–3 sessions. Melasma usually needs a longer course, and results vary from person to person.

Is pico toning better than laser toning?

Picosecond lasers deliver extremely short pulses that break up pigment with less heat, which many doctors prefer for pigment. Laser toning is a lower-cost alternative. Compare them in pico toning vs laser toning.

What should I avoid between sessions?

Sun exposure, harsh exfoliants and heat straight after treatment. See what to avoid after pico toning.
