What causes dehydrated skin?

Dehydrated skin is short of water, which is different from dry skin. Dry skin is a skin type that makes too little oil, while dehydration is a temporary condition, so even oily or acne-prone skin can be dehydrated. It happens when the skin barrier lets water escape faster than it is replaced. Common causes include harsh cleansers and over-exfoliation, strong actives such as retinoids and acids, air conditioning and heating, cold dry winters, long flights, alcohol and not drinking enough water. Some acne medicines, including isotretinoin, also dry the skin.

How dehydration is assessed

At Dernia Clinic Myeongdong, your doctor looks for the signs of dehydration and checks your barrier and routine. Typical signs are:

  • Tightness after cleansing, even if you get oily later in the day
  • Fine crisscross lines that appear when you gently push the skin
  • Dullness, and makeup that sits on the surface or cakes
  • More sensitivity and redness than usual

Your doctor also asks about products and medicines, since fixing the cause matters as much as adding hydration. If dryness comes with itching, flaking or a rash, it may be eczema; see the medical section below.

Treatment options for dehydrated skin

Hyaluronic Acid Skin Booster

An HA skin booster places non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid into the skin for an instant water glow. It is the classic Korean choice for quick, affordable hydration and lasts about 1–3 months.

Skinvive

Skinvive by Juvéderm places microdroplets of HA to improve hydration, smoothness and glow for about six months. Your doctor chooses it when you want longer-lasting results from a single session.

Profhilo

Profhilo is a high-concentration HA injected at five points on each side, where it spreads through the skin. It is chosen when dehydration comes with early laxity, usually as two sessions about a month apart. It improves firmness as well as glow.

Chanel Injection

The Chanel injection uses NCTF 135HA, a cocktail of HA with vitamins, amino acids and antioxidants. The nickname is Korean shorthand and has no link to the fashion house. It suits dull, thirsty skin, usually as three sessions.

Hydrafacial & Aqua Peel

A Hydrafacial gently cleanses, exfoliates and infuses hydrating serums. It gives an instant boost that lasts one to two weeks, with no downtime, and is a popular way to recover from a long-haul flight.

LDM Water Drop Lifting

LDM uses dual-frequency ultrasound to soothe and support hydration. It is a gentle add-on after boosters or for sensitive, dehydrated skin, and a session takes about 15–20 minutes.

Combination plans

A common plan pairs a booster for lasting hydration with a Hydrafacial or LDM for an instant refresh. Compare the injectables in Skinvive vs Profhilo and Chanel injection vs Rejuran Healer, or read skin boosters explained. Results last longest when you also repair your barrier at home.

At-home care and prevention

  • Use a gentle, low-foaming cleanser and avoid very hot water.
  • Layer a hydrating serum under a moisturizer with ceramides.
  • Apply moisturizer to slightly damp skin to lock in water.
  • Cut back on exfoliants and strong actives until your barrier recovers.
  • Use a humidifier in dry rooms and drink water regularly.

Planning treatment during a trip to Seoul

Flying and hotel air conditioning both dehydrate the skin, so many visitors book a Hydrafacial or booster early in their stay. Boosters can leave small bumps for a day or two. Read about flying after skin boosters, then book a consultation.

When dryness may be medical

Persistent dryness with itching, flaking, cracking or a rash may be eczema, psoriasis or contact allergy and needs medical treatment. Dry skin with tiredness and weight change can also relate to thyroid problems. Injectables are avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers from our medical team. Still unsure? Ask a doctor or browse all patient questions .

What is the difference between dry and dehydrated skin?

Dry skin is a skin type that produces too little oil. Dehydrated skin lacks water and can happen to any skin type, including oily skin. The two often overlap.

Which skin booster lasts longest for hydration?

Skinvive typically lasts about six months, and Profhilo about six months after two sessions. A classic HA skin booster lasts about 1–3 months.

Is there downtime after skin boosters?

Usually only small bumps or mild redness for a day or two. See is there downtime after skin boosters for details.

Can oily skin be dehydrated?

Yes. Oily skin can still lack water, often because of harsh cleansers or drying acne products. It may feel tight yet look shiny later in the day.

How often should I repeat hydrating boosters?

It depends on the product: every 1–3 months for a classic HA booster, or about twice a year for Skinvive or Profhilo maintenance.
